ALEXANDRIA, VA — The Bombay Canteen will hold a soft opening Feb. 2 and officially celebrate its grand opening on Sunday, Feb. 8, at 2010 Eisenhower Ave. in Alexandria.

Launched by restaurateur Asad Sheikh and chef Nishi Barua, The Bombay Canteen brings the bold, nostalgic tastes of one of the world’s most dynamic cities to Northern Virginia, according to a news release. The restaurant celebrates Bombay’s (now known as Mumbai) culinary heritage — a city of contrasts, colors, and unforgettable street food.

From sizzling tawa to the aroma of slow-cooked curries, the menu draws inspiration from Bombay’s street corners and family kitchens. Guests can enjoy such as vada pav (spiced potato fritters in soft buns),pav bhaji (buttery mashed vegetables served with toasted bread), layered chaats bursting with crunch and spice, and biryanis that honor tradition.

“Bombay is a city where food is deeply emotional — it’s tied to memory, family, and place,” said Sheikh, owner of The Bombay Canteen. “With The Bombay Canteen, we wanted to recreate that feeling and share the flavors we grew up with in a way that feels both authentic and welcoming.”

Desserts include classic Indian sweets such as gulab jamun, alongside house-made, Indian-inspired gelatos in flavors like Mango Lassi, Rose Petal, and Cardamom.

Lunch is served Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., featuring both vegetarian and non-vegetarian unlimited Thali platters ($18) — an assortment that includes dishes such as saag paneer, chicken tikka masala, naan, rice, and dessert. Dinner service is available daily.

A rapidly intensifying coastal storm isn't likely to bring any significant snowfall to Northern Virginia this weekend; however, it could disrupt some travel plans as bitterly cold temperatures continue to maintain a tight grip on the D.C. region.

This weekend's storm is expected to take shape on Friday, then evolve into a nor'easter along the Atlantic Coast into Saturday, according to forecasters

The most significant snowfall is predicted for the Carolinas, the southern Appalachians and parts of southern Virginia, where a winter storm warning is in effect from 4 a.m. Saturday until 7 p.m. Sunday. Total snow accumulations between 5 and 10 inches are expected.

Right now, the storm will likely stay to the south and east of the D.C. region, which will probably see a dusting of snow at most on Saturday, according to The Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang.

The storm is also expected to bring strong winds to Virginia on Saturday and Sunday, with gusts reaching up to 40 mph at times on Sunday.

Virginians with weekend travel plans should keep an eye on the forecast and expect major disruptions in the southern portion of the state, according to NBC Washington meteorologists.

"I-95 and I-85 from southern Virginia to South Carolina, I-81 in southwest Virginia and east Tennessee and I-40 from eastern North Carolina to Nashville will all be snow-covered," NBC Washington forecasters said. "Airports from Charlotte Douglas to Raleigh to Greenville-Spartanburg to Asheville to Norfolk will all have widespread cancellations and delays."

Meanwhile, bitterly cold temperatures and dangerous wind chills are expected to linger through the weekend as an Arctic blast of air sweeps in behind the storm, forecasters said.

A cold weather advisory is in effect for the D.C. region until 10 a.m. Saturday, the National Weather Service said. Very cold wind chills as low as 10 degrees below zero are expected, which could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken.

By Monday, temperatures could finally climb above freezing with highs aiming for the mid-30s.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — As crews continue work among frigid temperatures to clear snow and ice from school access and city streets, Alexandria City Public Schools will have students engage in synchronous virtual learning with their teachers on Friday, Jan. 30.

All ACPS buildings and offices will be closed to in-person learning and activities.

All essential personnel, including building engineers, custodians, maintenance shop employees and security staff, must report to their work location if safe to do so, the district said. All other facilities and operations staff will be contacted by their direct supervisor about their reporting instructions.

Class times will include synchronous instruction via Zoom, which means lives virtual instruction with teachers, as well as independent work. Teachers will also provide virtual office hours.

Due to the school closures, the posting of grades has been delayed. Families will be notified when new to post grades is determined.

Staff and families should be prepared for virtual synchronous learning for students in grades three to 12 when there is a school closure due to inclement weather due to the school year calendar not allowing for any traditional snow days.

Students in grades K-2 will not take home Chromebooks during inclement weather events. K-2 students will bring home library books to read and receive choice board activities from their homeroom teacher for completion when schools are closed due to inclement weather conditions.More information will be shared if schools need to close for more than one day. Please know that the school division will monitor any power outages and any other unforeseen circumstances prior to making a final decision.

When inclement weather — such as snow, ice or extreme cold temperatures — occurs, and buses cannot safely transport students to and from school, it may be necessary for ACPS to close school buildings and provide at-home virtual instruction under these circumstances. In addition, if conditions are too extreme for student walkers to make it to school safely, or too dangerous for staff to travel, the decision to provide at-home virtual instruction may also be made.

The school district said it works in conjunction with the City of Alexandria emergency management staff to assess road and public sidewalk conditions and include school personnel in inspecting the conditions of bus travel routes, ACPS parking lots and bus lanes.
