Gusty Santa Ana winds have prompted advisories across parts of Southern California into early Tuesday afternoon as the region braces for another storm on New Year’s Eve.
The powerful winds wreaked havoc on homes and drivers Monday, with several trees reported down, including one that landed on top of a Tesla in Orange County.
The driver was taken to a local hospital with unknown injuries after the palm tree toppled near Disney Way and Anaheim Boulevard, close to the Disneyland Resort. A passenger in the vehicle was not injured.
Forecasters expect Santa Ana winds to continue Tuesday morning under mostly cloudy skies.
Wind advisories remain in effect for Los Angeles and Ventura counties through 3 p.m. Northeast winds between 20 and 35 mph, with gusts of 40 to 55 mph, are possible, according to the National Weather Service.
“Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result,” the NWS said. The 5 Freeway through the Grapevine will also be affected by gusty winds Tuesday.
Advisories for San Bernardino and Riverside counties, calling for winds between 15 and 30 mph with gusts up to 55 mph, will expire two hours earlier at 1 p.m.
“The strongest winds will occur through and below the Cajon Pass and adjacent foothills, below the San Gorgonio Pass, and through the canyons of the Santa Ana Mountains,” the NWS said.
Winds are expected to diminish later in the afternoon and into the evening.
Meanwhile, forecasters are monitoring an upcoming storm that will impact New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
“As we get to your seven-day forecast, we’ll look at rain beginning in the Central Coast early Wednesday and then spreading to most of Southern California throughout the day,” KTLA’s Kirk Hawkins said.
The heaviest rain will fall between midnight and noon on New Year’s Day across areas south of Point Conception, according to the NWS. From midnight to dawn, coasts and valleys are expected to see between 0.50 and 0.75 inches of rain, with 0.75 to 1.25 inches falling on mountains and foothills.
In total, the storm is expected to bring 1.25 to 1.75 inches of rain, with up to 4 inches in the foothills and mountains.
“Due to the large amount of rain that fell last week, there will be much more runoff than usual and flood watches will be strongly considered over the next 24 hours,” the NWS said.
Rose Parade Rain
Forecasters also predict a near 100% chance of rain during this year’s Rose Parade. “The last wet New Year’s parade was in 2006,” according to the NWS.
