“This is a dream come true for a lot of people who play sports,” said South running back Austin French, who made big plays on all three sides of the ball with touchdowns both by rushing and by returning a Bartlett punt, plus an interception on defense. “I’m having a great time doing it with the people that I love.”
Despite the above uncertainties, 2024’s top contenders brought into the season, the Wolverines were far from exempt on that front. Star quarterback Cole Yarrington graduated, while last year’s top Alaskan wideout Landon Drumm moved to the lower 48.
“We’ve all sat and talked about how, ‘Oh, so-and-so left and so-and-so left,’” said Head Coach John Lewis. “They shouldn’t be here, right? We were here.”
The Wolverines took what many expected to be a tight, defensive war of attrition and wasted little time turbo-charging it into a sprint and leaving Bartlett in the dust. A suffocating Golden Bears defense, led by Alaska’s most terrifying player, that had previously allowed double-digits just twice, struggled to contain the two-headed rushing monster of French and Ethan Yarrington, Cole Yarrington’s brother, who added three more scores on the ground.
“Deuce is a great player, and our scheme was to run away from him,” Ethan Yarrington said. “But then, after we started running away from him, he started to almost tackle. We were like, ‘Alright, let’s just run right to him.’”
The football state title is the latest addition to a rapidly growing South Anchorage High School trophy case. The Wolverines have already captured state titles in flag football and boys’ cross country this fall.
“Look at the communities here. That’s the big thing,” Lewis said. “They didn’t just bring back and resurrect the Dark Side. They brought the community, and they showed that football is the number one sport in that school.”

Relentless was the word of the day Thursday for the Chugiak High team at the Alaska State 4A Volleyball Tournament.
Facing a South High team that was riding a 31-match winning streak, the Mustangs kept swinging away and toppled the Wolverines 3-2 to advance in the winner’s bracket.
“We played to win,” Chugiak head coach Cera Jondrow said. “We didn’t play not to lose.”
That aggressiveness was clear from the outset as Chugiak led much of the first set and snared a 25-22 win.
“It was really important to stay relentless and stay just super, super pumped,” Mustangs senior Elise Kelley said.
South battled back to take the second set 25-17, and after Chugiak won the third 25-19, the Wolverines forced a fifth set with another 25-17 win in the fourth.
Not only did the Chugiak victory stop South’s extensive win streak, it also broke a personal streak. Now in her eighth year at the helm for Chugiak, Jondrow had never coached a Mustangs team to a win against the Wolverines.
“First time at state,” she said. “I’m so elated. You’re a little nervous getting them in the first round, but couldn’t have gone better.”
The two teams played a close fifth set before a late run by Chugiak sealed the win by a 15-13 score.
“This was the first time we’ve fully came together to our full potential against them,” Kelley said.
The win showed that the 4A division is deep and talented throughout. Last year’s state champion Wasilla wasn’t even able to qualify for state this year.
“We’re such a tight conference, it really can be anybody’s game any day of the week,” she said. “I think we just finally started clicking kind of late in the season, and really playing as a team and playing for each other.”
While Kelley was a hitting dynamo for Chugiak, Jondrow pointed out the play of senior setter Oliviya Rodriguez, who was playing with a broken finger.
“I wasn’t planning on having her play front row, because that’s a little scary when you have a broken finger,” Jondrow said. “She is absolutely incredible. I love her fight. I love her spirit.”
The tournament is double elimination, so both South and Chugiak are scheduled to play Thursday night, and despite the loss, the Wolverines are still in the mix for a state title.
Service also advanced in the first round and will take on Chugiak on Thursday evening.
While Nikiski is the defending champ in the 3A division, both Kenai Central and Valdez will be likely contenders as well.
Both teams swept their first-round matches, with the Buccaneers topping Nome-Beltz 3-0.
Valdez head coach Madison Alexie said her team is led by a group of seniors: Destiny Day, Kelli Malcuit, Lola Compehos and Rylee Wade.
“They’ve played really hard,” Alexie said. “We have four seniors who are four-year varsity starters, so they are hungry and they’ve been great with our underclassmen. And everybody just has been pushing each other to do better.”
Valdez has put together a competitive schedule that included a number of matches with 4A teams and a big tournament in Las Vegas early in the season.
