The Anchorage School District has closed schools Thursday due to freezing rain and hazardous road conditions, according to an online statement.

Anchorage and much of the Kenai Peninsula are under a winter weather advisory until 1 a.m. Friday. It calls for ice accumulations around one-tenth of an inch.

“Although temperatures are likely to warm above freezing today, rain falling onto frozen and snow-covered surfaces will quickly form ice,” the advisory says. “Slow down and use caution while traveling.”

Warmer air is moving into the area, but surface temperatures are hovering around freezing, said Kristine Chen, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Anchorage.

“What that means is that when we do have precipitation that makes it over the mountains and into the Anchorage area, it's melting as it comes down,” Chen said. "It's falling as rain, and as soon as it hits the ground, it freezes.”

Thursday marks the fourth time the Anchorage School District has called off a full day of class due to winter weather this school year. District spokesperson Corey Allen Young said the district is allotted two snow days and makeup days will need to be scheduled.

“There’s different options,” he said. “It may not always mean a day, it could be extra hours. But that’s something still to be determined.”

The district said after-school sports, activities and community rentals were canceled Thursday.

The rain comes after Anchorage broke its January snowfall record on Tuesday, following a winter storm that dumped more than 10 inches of snow on the city, prompting early school dismissals and dozens of collisions.

Chen said that recent snow means forecasted rain could make driving conditions difficult.

“Slow down, give yourself extra distance, especially if you're driving over bridges and overpasses,” she said.

Chen said there are multiple storm systems moving in from the Gulf of Alaska, and they’ll bring several rounds of precipitation. The first one is expected to end early Thursday, she said, but more freezing rain is forecast this afternoon.

“This first round could affect the morning commute," she said. "And then with that second round comes in, that could have additional impact for the evening or afternoon commute."

Generally, she said, conditions are expected to be the worst on the east side of town, because they’re closer to the mountains.

“The general expectation is that conditions will be worst closer to the mountains,” she said. “I do have a relatively short commute, but there was not too much freezing rain on the west side of town."

The Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District closed schools in Talkeetna, Willow and Trapper Creek on Wednesday, but all schools were open Thursday. Public schools on the Kenai Peninsula were also open.

In Anchorage, Alaska Pacific University and the University of Alaska Anchorage were open Thursday and People Mover buses were running, but officials warned of possible delays.

Anchorage schools are expected to reopen Friday, the district said.

All Anchorage School District schools and support facilities are closed due to freezing rain that’s created hazardous road conditions, district officials announced early Thursday morning.

District officials said only emergency staff should report for work on Thursday, including all facilities and maintenance staff. A ribbon-cutting ceremony planned for Thursday at Inlet View Elementary has been postponed.

All after-school sports, activities, and community rentals are also cancelled, district officials announced just after 11 a.m.

“Our transportation team will be doing overnight road checks to make sure the roads are safe for school travel tomorrow,” the district said in a statement Tuesday. “If the roads are not safe, we will notify you by 5:30 a.m. tomorrow ... We will update staff and families next week on how we will be making up the closure days.”

A National Weather Service winter weather advisory is in effect until 1 a.m. Friday. Forecasters warn there may be more freezing rain to come Thursday afternoon.

The weather advisory warns of “very difficult” driving conditions for the evening commute Thursday across Anchorage and Eagle River. The advisory also covers the western Kenai Peninsula where freezing rain is most likely east of Sterling and from Clam Gulch to Ninilchik.

Ice accumulations of around one tenth of an inch are possible with the highest accumulation near the mountains, the advisory states. “Although temperatures are likely to warm above freezing today, rain falling onto frozen and snow covered surfaces will quickly form ice.”

Backcountry avalanche danger from Girdwood south through Turnagain Pass to Seward was “high” above 2,500 feet and “considerable” from 1,000 to 2,500 feet, according to the Chugach National Forest Avalanche Information Center. Dangerous avalanche conditions also exist in Chugach State Park, the center said.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - It’s a wintry mess Friday across Southcentral and areas of the Interior. A few avalanches occurred overnight across the state, with the avalanche danger remaining high in Southcentral. While rain, freezing rain and snow are still impacting Alaskans, the bigger impacts are shifting to the roads into Friday night.

The Richardson Highway will stay closed overnight between milepost 19 to 65 as crews continue avalanche mitigation efforts through Thompson Pass, according to the Alaska Department of Transportation.

DOT officials said crews have completed controlled avalanche work on the south side of Thompson Pass, triggering multiple large slides. None of the additional avalanches reached the roadway. Crews are now working to clear debris from an avalanche that impacted the highway earlier.

Final safety assessments are planned for Saturday morning.

In a separate update, DOT said the Richardson Highway has reopened between Fort Greely and Paxson. Officials caution that driving conditions remain difficult as crews continue to work in the area.

Motorists are encouraged to check Alaska 511 for the latest updates.

Wind gusts were a extreme in some locations. Sunburst, near Seward saw a 99 mph gust, 93 at Flat Top and 91 at Alyeska. Anchorage’s Merrill Field saw a gust hit 49 mph.

Roads that are wet are a major issue. With the rain on top of the snow Friday, roads turned icy and dangerous through the day. Temperatures will drop below freezing tonight, creating an icy sheen that should have drivers either staying off the roads, or using extreme caution.

Over 2 feet of snow was reported from the top of Alyeska.

Scattered power outages remained in the Mat-Su, and interior Alaska. Crews continue to work to restore power to those impacted.

A record rainfall was set in McGrath yesterday as the storm moved ashore. The rainfall hit .60 inches Thursday, breaking the old record of .54 inches set in 2014.

Schools closed on Friday throughout the Anchorage School District and the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District due to rain and freezing conditions. All schools in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District are closed except Glacier View School. Elementary and middle school activities are canceled, and any updates on high school after-school activities will be shared by noon on Monday.

Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson told personnel to stay home Friday if they were not mission essential.

The Anchorage Fire Department is asking Anchorage drivers to stay off the roads during the current slick conditions if they are able to. Department spokesperson Megan Peters said the request is not only to keep the general public safe but also to allow first responders to do their jobs.

“We are still responding to incidents, strokes, medical emergencies, allergic reactions, those happen all the time,” Peters said. “We have to be out here, the general public doesn’t, so if the public can stay home we really would appreciate it.”

Peters said the Fire Department curtailed all discretionary travel on Friday and limited itself to responding to emergencies. Peters said that meant that ambulance driver training for the newest academy members had to be suspended for the day.

Golden Valley Electric Association’s electric outage tracker shows ongoing power disruptions across portions of GVEA’s service area Friday, with over 2,000 customers currently without electricity according to the utility’s outage map. The most impacted areas include sections along Ballaine Road and Sheep Creek Road.

Meanwhile, Alaska Department of Transportation crews are monitoring flooding near the Richardson Highway in Valdez.

Officials report localized flooding at Dayville Road and Hazelett Avenue and are developing plans to address impacted stretches once conditions allow.

Efforts to open drainage channels through snow berms are underway, though some culverts remain uncertain due to snowpack depth.

Officials say they expect to bring a steam truck to Valdez to assist once the roadway reopens.

The Matanuska Electric Association is reporting eight active outages with 234 customers reporting a power outage. The biggest outages are near Talkeetna, Nancy Lake, Willow and Caswell Lakes. MEA states on social media that they currently have a handful of smaller outages around the Valley. They warn that in some places, their trucks can’t get above 15 mph.

Homer Electric is reporting 165 customers are without power in Funny River. In Sterling, 88 customers are reporting power outages. There is a smaller outage in Cohoe as well.

From Talkeetna to Trapper Creek, the Parks Highway is closed to commercial vehicles due to multiple accidents, causing it to be “impassable,” according to the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities.

The closure is expected to last until 4:30 p.m.

Doug Schoessler, the Public Works Director in Seward, says they are experiencing flooding on several roads on Friday morning.

“Third Avenue/state highway coming through town is flooded up Nash Road just outside of town. Both of those are actually state roads that are flooded up, and I’m sure they’re trying to get in there, probably busy as can be,” Schoessler said.

The main focus right now for the city is trying to keep up with sanding.

“All the roads are slippery. We’re running sand trucks nonstop trying to keep everything, get the ice taken care of,” Schoessler said.

Schoessler warns Seward residents to be careful when driving because there have been reports of cars sliding on the roads. He also recommends that people wear ice cleats when walking around.

Residents of Seward who experienced frozen water pipes in the past two weeks should also consider running their water at a low stream to avoid future freezes.

All Kenai Peninsula Borough School District activities scheduled on the Peninsula for Friday, Jan. 16, and Saturday, Jan. 17 are cancelled.

At this time, the Richardson Highway remains closed from Milepost 12 to Milepost 65, which includes Keystone Canyon and Thompson Pass, due to ongoing avalanche mitigation and cleanup operations. DOT anticipates providing another public update around 5 p.m. Friday with an update from their Maintenance and Operations staff.

DOT is also conducting avalanche hazard reduction today along the Seward Highway and Portage Glacier Highway. The Seward Highway, south of Girdwood and north of Portage, will be closed from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Seward/Sterling Wye area will be closed from 10 a.m. to noon. Between Seward and Crown Point will be closed from noon to 3 p.m. The Portage Glacier Highway will be closed from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Snow quickly transitioned to rain and freezing rain through the night as our warmer air continued to build into Southcentral. While snow is still expected in the mountains, areas of the Copper River Basin and the Susitna Valley will see a rain/snow mix and freezing rain, while the rest of Southcentral will hold onto a rain/snow mix. We’ll still want to watch for some minor flooding concerns, particularly along the southern parts of the Kenai, where heavy rain has been with us.

Take it easy on the roads both Friday and Saturday, as temperatures will be back and forth near freezing and falling back into the teens for lows into the weekend. We are watching a system on Saturday that could bring another round of light snow and wintry mix to Southcentral.

The better chance for a wintry mix will arrive in the afternoon hours and evening, as temperatures warm back near freezing. Thankfully, winds won’t be an issue into Saturday, but we could still see some gusts of 20–40 mph.

Temperatures have warmed by nearly 40+ degrees in parts of the Interior since Thursday morning. While snow is still falling throughout many areas of the Interior, as the warmer push of air builds in, we could see some localized areas of freezing rain. This will most likely occur near Fairbanks and surrounding areas, as well as through the Alaska Range. Any ice accumulation we see will amount to a glaze of a few hundredths of an inch. All it takes is a glaze of ice to create issues on the roads. We continue to see strong winds through the Alaska Range, where gusts of 70–80 mph are occurring through Isabel and Windy Pass, as well as near Delta Junction. These winds are our Chinook winds, which are finally driving highs in the Interior well above zero for the first time in more than a month. This is the warmest weather some in the Interior have seen since around Halloween.

We’ll continue to hold onto some strong winds into the night for the Interior and Alaska Range, which could lead to some blizzard conditions. Please be careful on roads, even in locations where rain or freezing rain doesn’t fall. The rise in temperatures will likely lead to some snowmelt, which will refreeze on roads into the evening hours. Things dry out into Saturday, with some sunshine returning for parts of the Interior. This will be short-lived, as another band of snow moves into the region by Sunday from the west. This will amount to very light accumulation. Expect highs to stay above zero through the middle of next week.

Backcountry avalanche warning remains in effect for the mountain passes along the Kenai, as high avalanche danger remains with us. Valdez is also seeing high avalanche danger.
