GIBSONTON, Fla. - A man is accused of firing multiple gunshots at a vehicle during a road rage incident on Interstate 75 in Gibsonton Saturday evening, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The backstory:
FHP says troopers responded to reports of a road rage shooting on northbound I-75 near Gibsonton Drive.
Troopers spotted the victim’s vehicle being chased by the suspect’s SUV as the vehicles exited I-75.

FHP says the victim’s car ran a red light while trying to escape the chase. Troopers followed the suspect, later identified as Genaldo Mercado, 33, as he got back on northbound I-75, passing the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway.
Mercado continued northbound, taking the Interstate 4 westbound exit before getting off at the U.S. Highway 301 exit.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office joined the pursuit and a deputy pulled over Mercado’s SUV.
Inside the vehicle were Mercado, another man and three children, ages 4, 12 and 8.
Troopers at the scene found spent shell casings on the driver’s side of the SUV and a handgun inside the vehicle.
Investigators spoke with the victims in Gibsonton and located their vehicle, which had been hit by three bullets.
FHP says Mercado admitted to firing three rounds from his gun at the victim’s vehicle. He told investigators he feared for his life during the road rage after the other vehicle slowed down and a passenger allegedly threw objects at his SUV.
Mercado was arrested early Sunday morning and taken to the Hillsborough County Jail. He faces the following charges:

The older brother of former UF quarterback Treon Harris and the son of well-known high school coach Tim “Ice” Harris Sr., Brandon Harris recently completed his first season at UCF, where he helped the Knights rank No. 25 nationally in passing yards allowed.
On Wednesday, reports emerged that Harris was headed back to Florida State, having served as a defensive analyst with the Seminoles' program during the 2020 season, his second season as a Division I assistant coach.
Furthermore, there were familial ties involved in Harris' decision: Harris is the younger brother of Florida's wide receivers coach, Tim Harris Jr.
Yet Harris appears to be headed to Gainesville rather than Tallahassee, becoming the latest addition to head coach Jon Sumrall's coaching staff.
Harris' three-year career at resulted in the Miami native being selected with the 60th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans. After six seasons in the NFL, Harris got his coaching start in 2019 by Florida International before his one-year stint at FSU.

In 2023, Harris was promoted to co-defensive coordinator, a role he'd serve in until the conclusion of the 2024 season, when Harris joined UCF ahead of Scott Frost's first season back with the Knights.
In 2025, UCF allowed just 13 passing touchdowns, and the defense finished No. 25 nationally in passing yards allowed.
Harris' addition is the second coaching hire of the day for the Gators as head coach Jon Sumrall constructs his staff in Gainesville while continuing to coach Tulane through the end of the 2025 season.
Earlier Friday, Florida hired Phil Trautwein as offensive line coach, a move expected to be finalized in the near future.
Trautwein, 39, spent the last six seasons as offensive line coach at Penn State. Before making his way to Happy Valley, Trautwein served as Boston College's offensive line coach from 2018-19, and previously operated as a graduate assistant for the Golden Eagles (2013-15), and as a special teams coordinator and tight ends coach at Davidson (2016-17).
Before kicking off his coaching career, Trautwein, a Vorhees Township, N.J. native, spent five seasons playing for Florida under head coaches Ron Zook and Urban Meyer, earning All-SEC recognition in 2006 and 2008, with the Gators winning BCS National Championships both seasons.
Trautwein appeared in 46 games with the Gators, starting 29.
Trautwein went on to spend four seasons in the NFL, originally signing with the St. Louis Rams as an undrafted free agent before joining the Cleveland Browns, New Orleans Saints and San Diego Chargers. He appeared in four games with the Rams in 2009.

After off-the-field assistant roles at FIU (2019) and Florida State (2020), he returned to the Panthers as cornerbacks coach in 2020 before quickly moving to FAU where he coached cornerbacks (2022) and served as co-defensive coordinator (2023-24).
The 2025 campaign was his lone year with the Knights, which allowed just 185.1 yards passing per game and 13 total touchdowns through the air. UCF ranked third in the Big 12 and 25th nationally in yards passing allowed.
Many believed Harris was set to move to FSU this offseason as his brother, Tim Harris Jr., is the Seminoles’ passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach. (His other brother, Treon Harris, played quarterback for the Gators.)
Harris’ father, Tim “Ice” Harris Sr., was the legendary coach of Booker T. Washington Senior High School in Miami. As such, his recruiting ties likely run deep within the state, making up for what he may lack in top-level experience as he moves into the SEC. Grade: B
