CORAL SPRINGS, FL — Coral Springs has too many live oak and cabbage palm trees and too many young trees on public property or city-maintained land, according to a recent study.
The good news is that most of Coral Springs trees are in good condition. Yet, having an imbalance of species makes the city’s urban forest vulnerable to pests and diseases that target specific species, according to a recent tree data analysis.
Live oak is the city’s most common species, making up more than 21 percent of the total tree population. Cabbage palms make up 21 percent of the total palm tree population.

City leaders used a U.S. Forest Service grant of $49,700 to inventory a total of 23,548 trees throughout 2023 and 2024. It’s information city officials are using to develop an urban forest management and tree master plan in which they’ll address the imbalance.
It’s work that Coral Springs has already started, said Claudia Alzate, an environmental program manager with the city.
Since the city is only 62 years old and was once farmland, it doesn’t have a lot of old, growth trees. In addition, as the city has grown and roads widened, older trees have been removed to make room for cars, she said.
The reason there are so many live oak and cabbage palm is that these species thrive in South Florida’s climate. Developers and property owners like to plant these trees because they grow fast and aren’t sensitive to diseases or pests.
However, Broward County has seen a disease that hit palm tree, Alzate said. When that happens, the sick tree is removed and nearby trees are tested and treated, if needed.
“With live oak, there’s really nothing that we’ve seen that can kill those trees,” she said.
Alzate said she noticed that the city had an overabundance of live oak years ago when she first started working for Coral Springs.
So, she started recommending the use of other species when replacing trees or with new plantings when possible.
The recent tree inventory confirmed what she had observed. It will take 10 to 15 years for a better balance to emerge, she said.
“We want to have a resilient urban forest, and that master plan is going to tell us, okay, so you should be installing at least two or three new species every year just to diversify,” Alzate said.

CORAL SPRINGS – A Coral Springs Middle School teacher has been named a finalist for the 2025 Career and Technical Education (CTE) Teacher of the Year Award at Broward County Public Schools.
Seema Naik, a veteran educator with 20 years of experience in Broward County Public Schools, has spent the last two years teaching biology, coding, and robotics at the middle school, according to a news release from the school district on Wednesday.
"Ms. Naik has been an integral part of Coral Springs Middle. Her influence goes beyond academics,” Principal Jill Slesinski said in a news release. “Her passion, dedication, and innovative teaching methods have significantly enriched our school's academic and extracurricular programs."

As an engineer turned educator, Naik said she is committed to bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world application.
“STEM and computer science are crucial for students' success in the 21st century, providing a foundation for career paths and developing critical thinking skills,” Naik said in the release.
Naik is one of six finalists who will be honored at the district’s 3rd Annual CTE Teacher of the Year Awards on Thursday, Feb. 27, at the DoubleTree Hotel Sunrise – Sawgrass Mills.
The event, which celebrates more than 50 outstanding CTE educators across middle, high, and technical schools, recognizes those who make a significant impact in preparing students for career success.
Broward Schools Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn emphasized the importance of CTE teachers in a statement: "Their commitment to building skills and nurturing talent directly impacts student success and the economic well-being of our community. Recognizing and celebrating their accomplishments inspires educators and future professionals alike."
Alongside for Naik, the other finalists are: Regina Ferriera (Cooper City High School), Janira Gallego-Arias (Glades Middle School), Rose Michel (Sandra Marie Curtis High School), Jacqueline Peeters (Miramar High School), and Sabrina Tobias (Lauderhill 6-12).

CORAL SPRINGS, FL - St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner and there’s no better place to get into the spirit than Cookiehead Bakery! This month, they’re rolling out a lineup of festive treats that bring all the lucky vibes and delicious flavors.
First up is the St. Patrick’s Day Cookie, a green, chewy delight topped with buttercream, a rainbow gummy and sprinkles of magic. For those who love variety, Cookiehead Bakery is also offering a box of 20 mini cookies, each topped with green clovers and vibrant sprinkles. Whether you’re sharing with friends or keeping them all to yourself, this box is a fun and tasty way to add a little extra luck to your day.
Thirsty? They have that covered, too! The Fruity Pebbles Milkshake is a colorful dream, blending creamy ice cream with the iconic cereal for a sip-worthy treat. And for those who need a caffeine boost with a hint of Irish charm, the Irish Cream Espresso is the perfect pick-me-up, featuring rich espresso with a smooth, creamy Irish-inspired flavor.

Hailing from generations of Brooklyn bakers, Gary and foodie wife Margie were inspired by their grandchildren to create an innovative, fun, and magical bakery experience that would include its own original story and characters, while also giving back to the community. Thus, the immersive bakery Cookiehead emerged from the magical world of Cookie Land and into Coral Springs, Florida, brought to life by Gary, Margie, and their entire family. Having lived in Coral Springs, Florida since 1978, Gary and Margie are excited to share their delicious recipes, fun ideas, veteran knowledge of the food industry, and flair for storytelling with their cherished community they’ve grown to love.
More than just a cookie shop: Cookiehead invites us all––young and old––into a world of whimsy and nostalgic animation where the magic of celebration unites us all through the power of recipes as enchanting as they are fanciful!
In addition to fresh twists on desserts and nitro iced coffee (which taste just like cookies, of course!) Gary and Margie hope to bring mentorship opportunities to local young bakers and foodies who share their passion for creative expression in the kitchen, as well as partnerships with local schools and charities. Inspired by the 1930’s Golden age of “rubber hose” style animation (think early Micky Mouse, Betty Boop, Felix the Cat, and Popeye), Cookiehead is an animated and ever-cheerful chocolate chip cookie with a zest for celebrating all of life’s big and small accomplishments. His goal to share the flavors and experiences of Cookie Land has led him to open Cookiehead––an immersive and magical bakery where anyone can stop by to enjoy the delicious and unique cookies featuring recipes straight out of Cookiehead’s own world.
Under the watchful eye of Cookiehead’s mentor, the Ultimate Cookie Wizard, and his pals Fiona Frosting, Fudge Edison, and their pet, Chewy, it’s up to Cookiehead to use the Magic Recipe Book to create an ever-evolving array of original flavors to keep the magic baking at Cookiehead. Unfortunately, Cookiehead’s nemesis, the evil Scorch, does whatever he can to thwart the newest batch of cookies that Cookiehead and his friends have prepared.
