Thunderstorms may disrupt Wednesday and Thursday mornings with a potential for flooding and power outages.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — There is a Weather Impact Alert for thunderstorms possible on Wednesday and Thursday morning.

The timing for Wednesday will include a risk of scattered thunderstorms from 5 AM - noon. A few of these storms may impact the Wednesday morning commute. Be ready to give yourself extra time heading out the door. Tune into First Edition from 5-7 AM for the latest updates on Wednesday morning.

The primary risk is heavy downpours, which may lead to street flooding. Lightning and high wind gusts may result in power outages. Visibility on the road may be limited if caught in one of these storms.

The Storm Prediction Center has a marginal risk of severe weather for South Texas on Wednesday. This is for the risk of small hail and high wind gusts closer to 60 mph.

The forecast for Wednesday is challenging because we will be monitoring the development of thunderstorms in the Big Bend region of Texas this afternoon and evening. The cluster of storms is expected to develop into a squall line. Some of the data has the line of storms splitting with one heading toward the Rio Grande Valley and one heading toward San Antonio. If the squall line splits, we will still be watching for scattered storm development along the outflow boundary as the sun comes up in the Coastal Bend.

It is important to note that not every model is in agreement with this much rain occurring or it being as strong as it is shown here. High-end rainfall totals could be over an inch, but most will see around 0.25" or less.

On Thursday, a similar scenario will play out. We will be watching for another squall line or mesoscale convective system to possibly develop and move into the Coastal Bend.

Something that keeps my confidence a little higher on Thursday morning is that it looks like we will see more upper-level energy approach the Coastal Bend overnight. This will give us a higher chance for thunderstorms to move into South Texas.

Timing on Thursday may have the most rain during the busy morning commute.

Right now, you should have rain gear ready to use. Remember when thunder roars, stay indoors, and if there's flooding, turn around and don't drown.

This is an unsettled week thanks to the upper-level low hanging out in Texas. Around 4 inches of rainfall is anticipated in the Hill Country and the northern Watershed.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick stopped at the Corpus Christi International Airport today to discuss new laws passed during the 89th Texas Legislature.

Lt. Gov. Patrick was joined by Texas State Representative Adam Hinojosa of District 27.

Patrick celebrated the passing of Senate Bill Four, which raises the homestead exemption from $100,000 to $140,000 and to $150,000 for seniors and those with disabilities.

He said that this will free up the state to take on more funding for schools in the area.

"We're dramatically changing the way we fund our schools," Patrick said. "Teachers first, students second. We're putting almost 700 million in, or more actually - closer to a billion."

Senate Bill 4 will save the average Texas homeowner about $363 on their annual property tax bill and would also apply retroactively to 2020-2025 tax bills.

As drought intensifies across South Texas, Lake Corpus Christi has dropped to critically low levels, uncovering decades-old structures once submerged beneath its waters. Bridges, boathouses, roads, and remnants dating back to the 1930s have reemerged, capturing the attention of residents and historians alike.

The reservoir, which once held a conservation capacity of 256,062 acre-feet, now holds just 45,996 acre-feet—about 18 percent full—according to the latest data from Water Data for Texas. The water level is currently 15 feet below the conservation pool, the result of prolonged dry conditions in the region.

Sweeping drone footage shared by Drone Hypnotics on YouTube shows a mesmerizing aerial view of the Texas lake, showcasing the stark contrast between the receding waters and the newly exposed landscape.

"It's shocking to say the least," Live Oak County historian Conrad Conrad (yes, that is his name) told KIII News. "And the worst part is there's nothing in the future."

One of the most notable discoveries is a steel bridge that once spanned the Nueces River. "The bridge was cut off actually at the moorings and dropped into the creek," Conrad explained. "So it's still down in there."

Also visible are the remains of a 1930s-era boathouse and park structures built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. "Now with the low lake levels, we're slowly able to see the remnants," said Krista Gonzales, an interpreter with Texas Parks and Wildlife.

Nathan Payne, director of Camp Zephyr—established along the lake in 1957—told KIII the lake's disappearing waters have brought history to the surface. "We've been here since '57...just shortly after they dammed the river and created the lake," he said.

The dramatic drop in water levels comes as nearly 12 percent of Texas faces "exceptional drought," the most severe category, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. Corpus Christi remains under Stage 3 water restrictions.

"These structures tell a story," Conrad told KII. "But they also show what we've lost—and what we stand to lose if things don't change."

April through August are sargassum seaweed season and this year's bloom is one of the largest.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Tx — A massive bloom of sargassum seaweed is currently in the area of Puerto Rico, and the group that's monitoring it says it will slowly make its way here.

Jace Tunnell, Director of Community Engagement for the Harte Research Institute, notes that these blooms can affect access to our local beaches.

Tunnell says, "In 2014, we had it to where it was waist, sometimes chest deep, along the shoreline. I actually saw pictures of it over somebody's head."

If you've been to one of our coastal beaches recently, you've probably spotted some of the seaweed that has already washed ashore. It's only going to get worse.

"It's gonna be all up and down the Texas coast and so it will be from down in South Padre up to the National Seashore, on Mustang Island and even up to Galveston", says Tunnell.

The seaweed invasion can also cause problems for boaters.

Tunnell says, "We have video of marinas just being clogged up with it and surrounding the boats, and so that can be bad for the intake of the boats."

The seaweed isn't just an eyesore.

Tunnell says, "If enough seaweed comes in, it does start to smell after a while. You know, it's an algae. It starts breaking down, and there'll be some flies and stuff around it."

Once the seaweed begins washing ashore in large quantities, beach maintenance crews will scrape the seaweed off the beach and move it toward the dune line. The seaweed does have its benefits. It can create more beach area and help build up dunes and the dune habitat.

Jace Tunnell says sargassum seaweed is like a floating rainforest. It's home to sargassum crabs, shrimp, fish, and countless other tiny organisms. You can also use it as mulch in your garden, although Tunnell recommends cleaning out all the sand and salt water with fresh water before use.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Downtown Corpus Christi has seen a lot of change in the last several years. New businesses continue to open with a push to transform the area in the best way.

David Foster is one of the newest business owners to forward that mission. He and his partner are the owners of Drams Bourban Bar, located at 605 N. Mesquite Street.

Vacant for decades, the property was built in the 1930s and was formerly a A&G Army and Navy Surplus Store, a grocery store, a hardware store, a cafe and now it will be home to some of the most upscale spirits in the city.

Foster also owns Bootleggers Liquor Store, located at 7629 S. Staples Street. It's been open for a little over two years. While seeing the increase of customers requesting high-end liquor, Foster and his partner decided it was time to open Drams.

“I’ve noticed more of a want for the higher-end, higher-allocated bourbons and tequilas," Foster said. "That kind of drove us to start looking around to find a spot to have a nice, upscale, luxury, elegant spot.”

David is currently completing the permit process for the 2,900-square-foot property. Once all of the electrical work, plumbing, HVAC system, new walls and flooring are complete, the lounge will also include an exclusive wine room. It will serve appetizers on a limited menu and provide a built-in locker for customers to rent and store their purchased bottles for later.

Foster added that the back of the property will be turned into a patio with a stage for musical performances. But that's not all. The other half of the building will be available for retail shops for tenants.

The project is expected to cost $1.7 million and was approved for a Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone #3 (TIRZ #3) incentive reimbursement of $523,500. This return on investment is distributed through the Vacant Building and Streetscape & Safety Improvement TIRZ #3 programs.

As Drams Bourbon Bar brings a new experience to Downtown Corpus Christi, it will also provide at least three dozen jobs to the community.

Construction is set to begin at the end of the summer. Foster said the doors will open by the end of the year.
