The powerful winter storm that swept over Southern California Tuesday night left a big mess in a Fullerton neighborhood where a giant tree was uprooted by the elements, while another came crashing down onto a home.

The tree was uprooted just after 11 p.m. Tuesday on Fern Street.

Fullerton resident Isaac Freeman, who lives with his parents in the house behind the tree, told NBC Los Angeles the sound of the tree falling got him out of bed.

“It was loud!” he said. “I was in bed and I remember hearing a slide sound; it was weird. And then we came out, and it was all the way across the street.”

Jim Klein lives next door to Freeman. He, too, could not believe his eyes.

“That’s when my wife actually was up, and she goes, ‘What’s going on out there?’” Klein told NBCLA. “And then I had to go out there and look and see what was going on. And the tree was across the road!”

A public works crew arrived soon after to chop up the tree and clear the street.

The city of Fullerton said it had reports of at least a few dozen trees that had fallen due to strong winds amid the storm.

Less than one mile away, a pine tree in front of Rashad Sharif’s house came crashing down onto his roof just before 2 a.m. Wednesday. The impact was incredibly strong.

“I thought it was either an earthquake, or I thought someone had driven through the house,” Sharif told NBCLA. “That’s how loud it was. That’s how much it shook. I ran out and I saw the tree and the remnants of the tree inside the living room.”

He felt grateful that he and his wife were not hurt.

“Normally I stay up late, but Ramadan is starting, so I went to bed early. And that’s why I was not on the couch where the damage happened,” Sharif said. “The main thing is that, you know, we’re OK.”

A city spokesperson told NBCLA that homeowners who experience damage due to fallen trees should submit a claim online so that a city crew can come take a look.

Sharif said he’s now waiting on the city to assess the tree and determine the next steps for his home.

More storm damage around LA

Downed trees weren’t just a problem in Fullerton.

In Koreatown, three trees collapsed on the corner of Serrano Avenue and 7^th Street at around 1 a.m. Wednesday, crushing two parked cars. Moments later, an unsuspecting person riding a scooter slammed right into the fallen trees.

At around 2 a.m. Wednesday in Arlington Heights, a parked car was damaged when a tree fell across 3^rd Avenue.

A tree crashed down in Woodland Hills early Wednesday morning, too, leaving the streets near Victory and Fallbrook without power.

Over in San Pedro, part of the 110 Freeway was closed Wednesday morning due to downed power lines after the night of heavy rain and gusts.

No one was injured in these incidents.

Another round of early morning rain is expected on Thursday, with more widespread rain by mid-morning, NBCLA Meteorologist Belen De Leon said.

A total of 0.25 to 1 inch of rainfall is expected throughout the region through Thursday; this should be the third and final storm of this week. Mountain snow will continue through Thursday, too.

Friday and the weekend should be clear, with warmer temps. Chances of rain return on Tuesday, Feb. 24.

Southern California’s second storm of the week brought strong winds and rain to the region, leading to trees falling on and damaging a home and vehicles in Fullerton on Wednesday.

Thirty-year Fullerton resident Michelle Wedge got up to get a drink of water early Wednesday and laid back down when she heard thunder and lots of rain.

“I thought it was hailing so I got up to look what was going on,” Wedge said.

She saw a bunch of leaves when she looked out her back door. After her car alarm started going off, she went outside and saw that a tree had fallen onto it. “So I just yelled to my husband, ‘There’s a tree on my car!’” Wedge said.

Six trees fell around their property on the 1800 block of Ash Avenue, near Brookhurst Road and Valencia Avenue, said husband Tom Wedge.

Another Fullerton resident, Vicky Aguilar, said on Wednesday morning she heard what sounded like trash cans blowing in the wind around her house also located on the 1800 block of Ash Avenue. After her neighbor’s alarm went off, she went outside to see what was going on and saw trees all over.

“My foster daughter stopped me and she goes, ‘Look’ and rain was coming in her room,” Aguilar said.

The fallen tree resulted in a cracked roof and damage to the outside of Aguilar’s house, she said.

Another vehicle was damaged by a fallen tree on the nearby 1800 block of West Avenue.

“Even with healthy maintained trees, they may experience failure when exposed to elements like saturated soil combined with strong winds and storm impacts,” said Kim Chaudhry, a spokesperson for the city of Fullerton.

Fullerton’s Hunt Branch Library on the 200 block of South Basque Avenue was closed Wednesday morning due to a power outage and a downed tree blocking access to the facility. As of Wednesday afternoon, officials don’t know when it’ll be reopened.

The business sign of the Totally 80’s Bar & Grille​ on Orangethorpe Avenue also fell during the high winds in Fullerton.

While citywide damage is still being assessed, over two dozen trees had toppled over during the storm, Chaudhry added.
