Estrella welcomed the third Rio Mirage Café in the West Valley to its gateway recently with a groundbreaking event attended by local dignitaries, community leaders, Estrella representatives, and the Gomez family, the restaurant’s owners.

Located at 10047 S. Estrella Parkway, the new Rio Mirage Café will bring its popular Sonoran-style cuisine to the heart of Goodyear’s Estrella community. This marks the third location for the restaurant, which has been serving authentic family recipes since 1999. The other locations are in Surprise and El Mirage.

The 9,000 SF restaurant will offer panoramic views of North Lake and the Estrella Mountains. It is billed as the “crown jewel” of the Rio Mirage Cafe Enterprise. The Gomez family is eager to take advantage of the incredible lakeside setting and create a destination that is unique to the area and missing in the West Valley.

The Spanish style blends Mission and Hacienda styles that fit so naturally in Arizona. To take advantage of the spectacular lakeside and distant vista views, the restaurant will be two stories, with private dining space on top, and an outdoor dining area. The restaurant is anchored by an enormous bar that is the gathering center surrounded by private sitting areas.

The stone, arches, Spanish tiles, and ornate iron details reflect the level of detail the family insisted on incorporating into the design. The dining areas are quaint, warm, and the perfect backdrop.

“The Gomez family had faith in me to bring a Spanish mission design that would be unique and fit into this neighborhood. We started out by looking at the land, taking advantage of these great views. Once it’s finished, it will be the new neighborhood meeting place. This will be a destination in Estrella, and in the City of Goodyear,” said Patrick O’Brien, Owner and Architectural Designer with O’Brien Luxury Designs, the project architect.

The general contractor is Desert Build (Josh Wagner).

Four female inmates were hospitalized Sunday morning after they suffered seizures while in prison, according to the Goodyear Fire Department.

On the morning of Nov. 16, Fire and other agencies responded to Perryville Prison for multiple prisoners seizing.

Four female prisoners were rushed to a hospital after taking illegal drugs, the Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation & Reentry said. Another prisoner also tested positive for drugs.

What they're saying:

In a statement to FOX 10, the department of corrections said the incident stemmed from "drug-soaked paper" that was brought into the prison from mail and visitors.

"This morning, 11/16, at ASPC-Perryville’s San Carlos Unit, 4 incarcerated women were transported offsite by local EMS for medical evaluation and treatment after exhibiting "seizure-like" symptoms. Initial information indicates that their medical symptoms were the result of illicit drug use. The 4 women have since been medically cleared and have returned to ASPC-Perryville.

As a precaution and per standard policy, additional inmates in the Unit were evaluated and, when appropriate, given drug tests. One additional incarcerated woman tested positive for illicit substances, and received necessary treatment and care.

The San Carlos Unit will remain under an operational curtailment until the situation is fully investigated and it can safely be returned to normal operations.

Unfortunately, much like prisons across the country, ADCRR continues to experience the negative consequences of drug-soaked paper being trafficked into prison units from outside sources via the U.S. mail and visitation, putting the lives of staff and the incarcerated population at risk. The dangerous substances can lead to significant risks when exposure or ingestion occurs. To combat these threats within Arizona’s prisons, ADCRR has been working on a plan to modernize and digitize general inmate mail that will be rolled out in the coming weeks, in addition to other interdiction and enforcement strategies."

Big picture view:

Last February, 14 female inmates overdosed from illegal drugs in a week inside Estrella Jail, prompting closer searches, including body scanners.

"This does not replace good old fashion detention work," Maricopa County Sheriff's Office Deputy Chief Mike Dawson said. "This doesn't replace the pat search we are trained to do in the academy. This is just the first step."

Donna Hamm, the founder of Middle Ground Prison Reform, a non-profit organization that works to protect the rights of the incarcerated in Arizona, said she wants Arizona’s Department of Corrections to turn its attention to inside the prison.

"They have to also do a thorough job of searching their staff members who, remember, go into the prison seven days a week, 24 hours a day on three shifts," she said. "It's very easy to initially think that if drugs got into the prison that came in through visitation that or through the mail. They have to do searches that are equally intrusive of the staff as well as the visitors and inmates."

What's next:

The inmates have been released from the hospital and have returned to the prison. Operations will start again for that unit once the situation is fully investigated.

GOODYEAR, AZ (AZFamily) — Four inmates had to be taken to the hospital after several of them were found having “seizure-like” symptoms at a prison in Goodyear on Sunday morning.

At about 8:15 a.m., first responders responded to Perryville Prison, near Citrus and McDowell roads, for reports of multiple female inmates having seizures. Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation, and Reentry (ADCRR) officials said that the symptoms were the result of illegal drug use.

The four women have since been cleared from the hospital and are now back at the prison. Goodyear Fire Battalion Chief Nick Lyons said a total of six inmates were involved, but two of them were not taken to the hospital.

As a precaution, additional inmates in the unit were evaluated, and some were given drug tests. ADCRR told Arizona’s Family that one other woman tested positive for illegal substances. The unit will remain under watch until the investigation is complete.

“Unfortunately, much like prisons across the country, ADCRR continues to experience the negative consequences of drug-soaked paper being trafficked into prison units from outside sources via the U.S. mail and visitation, putting the lives of staff and the incarcerated population at risk,” ADCRR media relations wrote in a statement. “The dangerous substances can lead to significant risks when exposure or ingestion occurs.”

ADCRR says it is working to digitize general inmate mail to help mitigate contraband entering prisons. The new plan is expected to be rolled out in the coming weeks.

The new store is located near 150th Drive and McDowell Road in Goodyear.

GOODYEAR, Ariz. — The new Trader Joe's store in the West Valley is scheduled to open this week.

The location near 150th Drive and McDowell Road is expected to open its doors on Friday, Nov. 7. The 9,600-square-foot store will be Goodyear's first Trader Joe's location.

Trader Joe's had been the most requested grocer from Goodyear residents when city officials conducted surveys on which businesses residents wanted to see come to the community. In 2019, the City of Goodyear proclaimed Dec. 13 as "We Want Trader Joe's Day in Goodyear."

Petitions have been signed over the years in an attempt to get the company to come to Goodyear.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held Friday morning before the store's doors open.

The grocery store chain has hundreds of locations in 42 states throughout the country.
