The Brief
GOODYEAR, Ariz. - A historic warbird landed at the Phoenix Goodyear Airport on Monday afternoon.
What we know:
This B-29 Superfortress is known as the DOC, and it flew in from Abilene, Texas.
It will be in the Valley for a few days for the public to see, and you can even take a tour of the inside.
This B-29 is one of over 1,600 B-29 bombers built in Wichita, Kansas during World War II. DOC is one of two B-29 Superfortresses still flying worldwide.

DOC's Friends, a nonprofit, is honoring the men and women who designed and built it, maintained it, and flew this aircraft during World War II by touring the U.S. and sharing its story.
"Because of the long legs, this plane can fly over 3,000 miles. It was sent to the south Pacific, and they're flying out of Guam, Tinian and Saipan, which is about a thousand miles from Japan. Flies about 200 miles an hour, a little over," Mark Novak, DOC's Chief Pilot said.
Novak, once an Air Force pilot, has been the DOC's chief pilot since 2016.
"The B-29 at the time was the most advanced aircraft in the U.S. arsenal. It could fly above 30,000 feet. It was pressurized compared to a B-17. It could fly twice as far and carry three times the bomb," Novak explained.
Novak says just under 4,000 B-29's were built at four different factories across the country.
Historic B-29 parks at Arizona airport for tours
"This aircraft served on active duty from ‘45 to ’56. The Air Force gave the Navy 250 of these in 1956 to use as targets," he said.
The aircraft spent decades untouched in the Mojave Desert until DOC's Friends chose to restore and fly it.
"Spent 40 years, 44 years in the desert. Our group spent 16 years restoring her in Wichita. Now, we've been flying her since 2016," he explained.
You may be wondering how DOC got its name. Think Disney.
"The squadron commander said, 'We have eight airplanes. We're going to be the Snow White squadron.' So, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. DOC's little dwarf brother is down the road at the Pima Museum, and that's Dopey down there," he said.
What's next:
DOC's Friends fly 140 hours a year. They spend about six months touring the country.
During the winter, they focus on aircraft maintenance.
The B-29 will be open to the public from April 23-27. There will even be flights on Saturday and Sunday.

GOODYEAR, AZ — RED Development and Globe Corp announced three new tenants that will be joining Goodyear’s GSQ!
According to a news release sent on behalf of the companies, the city’s first Trader Joe’s will open in a 13,500-square-foot location at GSQ.
“This location is a great fit for Trader Joe's, surrounded by growth, development, and a strong sense of community. We're excited to bring our unique products and hire more local, friendly crew to serve as Goodyear's neighborhood grocery store,” said in part Chris Warren, store captain at the future Goodyear Trader Joe’s, in a news release sent to ABC15.
An opening date for the Trader Joe’s has yet to be announced, but updates on this location are said to be posted on the company’s website as they become available.
Others to join the lineup include Black Rock Coffee Bar and Firebirds Wood Fired Grill, both slated to open in 2026. Here’s what we know about these two tenants:

GOODYEAR, AZ — Buc-ee's, the beloved convenience store, fuel stop, and travel center, has officially broken ground on its first-ever Arizona location!
“Goodyear is growing so fast, and so we just think it's ideal. The opportunities for the workforce here, the people that live here, we're really excited about that opportunity,” said Arch Aplin, co-founder of Buc-ee's, during the groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday.
The state’s first Buc-ee’s Travel Center will occupy 74,000 square feet and offer 120 fueling positions.
“We'll employ hundreds and hundreds and hundreds, probably upwards of 1,000 people during the construction process, and then once we get open, we'll have 200 plus full-time employees. So, it'll be a big impact there, from the community and for the tax base. But even more important than that, will be the traveling public that will stop here and spend their dollars in Goodyear, Arizona,” said the co-founder of Buc-ee’s.
“It's a really, really positive business for residents and locals alike to take advantage of a really great opportunity that adds to the economic impact, because those folks are spending dollars in our community, they're buying houses, they're spending their money in the area, which adds to the economic growth,” said Joe Stewart, senior business development manager at the city of Goodyear.
The Texas favorite will open its doors next summer off I-10 and Bullard Avenue and is slated to be a 24-hour location.
The Goodyear location has been in the works for some time, and there could be more in our state.
When ABC15 asked why they decided to open a Buc-ee’s in Arizona, Aplin alluded to more potential Buc-ee's expansions in the state.
“We've been looking in Arizona for quite some time. It's not that we didn't want to get here. We've just been busy building a lot of stores in the southeast. But I think we're going to have an incredible experience in Arizona, and we're looking for more Arizona sites,” said Aplin.
Further details about the potential other locations were not immediately provided.
