An investigation into Richard Upright began after Google submitted tips notifying authorities that child sexual abuse material was uploaded to a Drive account.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A Guilford County judge set a $750,000 secured bond Monday for a former Vandalia Christian School teacher accused of using artificial intelligence and photo editing software to superimpose his students' faces onto child sexual abuse material.

Richard Lynn Upright, 56, appeared in court for the first time following his Feb. 27 arrest on 10 counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor. A detective testified that investigators ultimately identified 111 confirmed images of child sexual abuse material tied to Upright across seven cyber tips submitted by Google to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

At the hearing, the judge acknowledged the emotional nature of the case but said the bond decision had to be grounded in law and evidence. Citing sentencing guidelines that recommend a secured bond range of $15,000 to $75,000 for a Class E felony — the classification that carries a maximum of 136 months in prison per count — the judge applied that range across all 10 charges and set bond at $750,000.

Detective Miller of the Guilford County Sheriff's Office testified that the investigation into Upright began in December 2025 after Google flagged a Drive account linked to him and reported it to NCMEC. The tip was routed through the FBI and North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation before landing with the Guilford County Sheriff's Office. A subpoena to Charter Communications confirmed the IP address was registered to Upright's home on Pleasant Garden Road, less than a mile from Vandalia Christian School.

Search warrants executed at both locations on Feb. 27 revealed that many of the images depicted students whose faces had been manipulated onto explicit material using AI or photo editing tools, according to detective testimony.

A parent of two students — one currently in Upright's class, one who had him as a teacher six years ago — addressed the court and urged the judge not to release him. He described one daughter's fear of adult men, her reluctance to attend a dance competition and her difficulty navigating the school day without a parent present.

"Not being able to protect my child from that and being able to see this," the father said, "is trying."

Upright, who was appointed a public defender at the hearing, waived a probable-cause hearing and is scheduled to return to Guilford County district court on March 31. The investigation is ongoing.

So on average, what we're finding is that the tax, the real estate tax base, has increased about 40-45% at this point," said Ben Chavis, Guilford County Tax Director.

A 45% jump in the assessed value of your home? That will impact how much property taxes you'll pay. But the notice you're going to get this week is not a bill, at least not yet.

"If you're in agreement with the value, there's nothing else you have to do but wait for the tax bill in July. There's gonna be a QR code on the form that is specific to your individual property. It'll pull up our website and take you directly to your property. You can review all the property data, characteristics of your property right there, and determine whether or not you want to appeal," said Chavis.

This impacts anyone who lives in Guilford County, about 192,000 homeowners, including those in the city limits of Greensboro.

If you're thinking, didn't we just have a reappraisal? The answer is yes. Normally, we're on a five-year cycle, but this is year 4. Chavis said the State Department of Revenue guidelines trigger a reappraisal anytime sales ratios are below 85%.

Brixx Wood Fired Pizza on Westover Terrace permanently closes, adding to Greensboro's string of restaurant shutdowns.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Brixx Wood Fired Pizza on Westover Terrace announced late Sunday that it will permanently close its Greensboro location on Feb. 16, the latest in a string of restaurant closures in the city this year.

The closure also affects the chain’s Winston-Salem location. A Burlington location previously closed in May 2024.

A Brixx spokesperson released a statement on the Piedmont Triad closures:

He called it “absolutely terrible.” He said “nobody understands a word this guy is saying.” He called it “a slap in the face to our Country.” The leader of the free world watched a celebration of love, culture, and everything this hemisphere has given to the world, and all he could see was something foreign. Something threatening. Something disgusting.

Let that sink into your bones.

The man who is supposed to represent all of us looked at the flags of our neighbors, heard the language of 500 million Americans across this hemisphere, and felt attacked. That’s not strength. That’s not patriotism. That is poverty of the soul.

And then there was the Turning Point show. Kid Rock in a college arena in North Dakota. Three million viewers watching a man who once wrote a song about liking underage girls perform as the “family-friendly” alternative to a Puerto Rican artist celebrating love. They called it the “All-American Halftime Show”, as if America has a velvet rope. As if this country belongs to some of us and not all of us. As if you need to sing in English to count.

Here’s what I want to say to everyone who posted about that show tonight, who shared it proudly, who turned away from Bad Bunny’s celebration because it was in Spanish and the flags weren’t only red, white, and blue:

Your children will see those posts. Your grandchildren will find them. The internet doesn’t forget. And one day, when the history of this moment is written, when our kids and their kids look back at 2026 the way we look back at the people who stood on the wrong side of every bridge and every march and every moment that mattered, they will know exactly where you stood. They will see who chose Kid Rock over a hemisphere of flags. They will see who called love “disgusting.” And they will carry that knowledge the way all of us carry the knowledge of what our ancestors did when they were tested.

I don’t say that with anger. I say it with sadness. Because hate is an inheritance nobody asks for, and yet it gets passed down just the same.

Bad Bunny didn’t say “ICE out” tonight. He didn’t need to. He just showed the whole world what America looks like when we are not afraid of each other. When culture is shared, not policed. When language is music, not a threat. When a flag from every nation in this hemisphere can walk across a football field together and the only words you need are the ones he gave us:
