HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — There are some reports of panic buying in the Hampton Roads area the day U.S. dockworkers went on strike, which shut down ports on the East and Gulf coasts.

WAVY viewers have sent photos of long lines at a BJ’s Wholesale Club in Hampton, where some items like toilet paper were in shorter supply, and of a Walmart in Yorktown, where paper towels, water and other items were in low supply.

“I didn’t expect that everything was sold out — disinfectant sprays, almost like a little COVID,” said Hampton Roads resident Elizabeth Hollis.

It’s important to point out that while the strike is expected to have significant effects on the global supply chain, things like toilet paper and paper towels are mostly produced in the U.S., so supplies of those shouldn’t be impacted as much as imported products such as electronics and car and machinery parts.

“We’re looking to buy a car and now I’m wondering, are the prices going to be higher now that the inventory is going to be low, do we wait it out,” said Hampton Roads resident Deborah Franklin.

Experts say the grocery products that will impacted the most include things like bananas and tropical fruit (about 75% of bananas in the U.S. enter through East Coast and Gulf Coast ports), and imported alcohol like beer and wine from Europe, and Caribbean spirits like rum.

Overall, though, experts warn that while you might still be able to find items, companies will likely pass on the added costs associated with the snarled supply chain to consumers.

George Berry, a local trucker in Hampton Roads who heads the For Truckers by Truckers advocacy group, told WAVY Tuesday morning that consumers should start preparing for some things to be in shorter supply.

“I want the community to start preparing,” Berry said. “I want them to go get essentials. Not, you don’t have to rush, panic buy, but I do want them to have essentials at their house. Toilet paper, paper towels, things of that nature.”

It’s unclear when a deal could be made between International Longshoremen’s Association, the union that represents about 45,000 port workers, and the United States Maritime Alliance, whose contract ended at midnight Monday.

However, workers like Rodrick Riddick, a longshoremen in Portsmouth, are hopeful the strike will bring better wages and benefits for workers.

The union has demanded 77% pay raises over six years to help deal with inflation, along with a total ban on the automation of cranes, gates and container-moving trucks used in the loading or unloading of freight.

“Even though the ILA’s members worked tirelessly during the pandemic to ensure that the nation’s commerce flowed and continue to sacrifice time with their own families so that goods can arrive in the homes of other families throughout the world, still, due to corporate greed, employers refuse to compensate the ILA’s members fairly. Over the last several years, the net revenues of these companies have grown astronomically from hundreds of millions to billions of dollars while ILA members’ wage increases do not even cover the cost of inflation. The ILA is fighting for respect, appreciation and fairness in a world in which corporations are dead set on replacing hardworking people with automation. Employers push automation under the guise of safety, but it is really about cutting labor costs to increase their already exceptionally high profits. As the last six years have demonstrated, automation cannot outperform the skilled men and women of the ILA. Automation of our nations’ ports should be a concern for everyone; the truth is, robots do not pay taxes and they do not spend money in their communities. The ILA will continue to fight until its members receive the fair contract they deserve.”

Gov. Glenn Youngkin issued the following statement on the port workers strike on the East and Gulf coasts that jeopardizes the livelihoods of countless Americans and cripple supply chains nationwide:

“Every day this strike of Port Workers along the East and Gulf Coasts continues, the economic impacts intensify, affecting livelihoods, supply chains and prices. The economic fallout from the work stoppage at The Port of Virginia extends well beyond the Commonwealth, as the Port manages approximately $66 billion in essential imports, with nearly 60 percent destined for locations outside of Virginia. As a cornerstone of Virginia’s economy, the Port supports 10 percent of the gross state product and supports employment for over half a million jobs in Virginia. “The time for leadership is now, President Biden has the tools to remedy this situation for the Commonwealth of Virginia and the nation, including utilizing provisions of the Taft-Hartley Act. The well-being of Virginia and American workers, as well as the health of our economy, depends on a swift resolution to this strike. A failure to lead will only drive-up prices, disrupt trade, and exacerbate the challenges already faced by Virginians and Americans,”

The strike overall is affecting 14 major ports in the East Coast and Gulf Coast, where more than 40% of total “containerized goods” enter the U.S.

NORFOLK, Va. — Time is running out for workers at several Port of Virginia terminals across Hampton Roads.

The union representing the dockworkers blames the U.S. Maritime Alliance for reportedly blocking the path toward a contract agreement.

Workforce commentator Thomas Fellows said that as the cost of living has gone up, wages have remained the same.

"The reason why we're seeing these contract negotiations happening is because of the inflation we've seen in the last few years. But we haven't seen a wage increase since 2018," Fellows said.

Union members are asking for a 77% wage increase over six years, with top pay increasing from $39 an hour to $69 an hour. The union is also asking for a total ban on all automation machines.

"If you look at automatic cranes, logistic software, systems for unloading and loading, that will take away jobs, and that's why we could see some serious struggle not only now but for the future," said Fellows.

According to Fellows, since the Port of Virginia is the third largest container port on the East Coast, it could significantly impact military logistics and defense, delay consumer goods, agricultural exports, manufacturing imports and exports, and the tourism and cruise industry.

U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-Va.) said a strike should be avoided.

"We've already had disruptions in the supply chain because of Houthi rebels firing missiles at commercial ships in the Red Sea. That poses enough challenges already, and we don't need a strike on top of it," Kaine said.

If a strike were deemed a danger to U.S. economic health, President Joe Biden could, under the 1947 Taft-Hartley Act, seek a court order for an 80-day cooling-off period. That would suspend the strike.

But Biden has signaled that he will not exercise this power. During an exchange with reporters on Sunday, Biden said "no" when asked if he planned to intervene in the potential work stoppage.

"Because it's collective bargaining, I don't believe in Taft-Hartley," he said.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Tornado and flash flood warnings for areas of northeastern North Carolina and across the Hampton Roads and Western Tidewater regions that had been effect have expired.

Super Doppler 10 meteorologist Ricky Matthews said there was a tornado on the ground near Corinth in Southampton County just after 4:30 p.m. There were no immediate reports of any damages or injuries.

There have been reports of flooding on several roads in Suffolk, including Quaker and Lumis roads, as well as the intersection of Old South Quay Road and Holy Neck Road, and a National Weather Service employee reported water flowing over the road at Doles Road in Southampton County, and standing water across much of Ivor.

There was also a report of high water on Governors Road in Bertie County.

The town of Smithfield said damage caused by Helene has caused a widespread outage of Spectrum internet and cable services, as it said “damage to a major hub in South Carolina and to one of their major fiber optic lines have caused service issues across the southeast.” The town said it didn’t know when services would be restored.

Flash flood warnings had been in effect for areas of northeastern North Carolina, including Bertie County, northwestern Gates County, Northampton County (NC) and northwestern Hertford County. A flash flood warning was also in effect for Suffolk, southwestern Isle of Wight County, Southampton County and Franklin.

Thunderstorms that were capable of producing tornadoes rolled through northeastern North Carolina, Western Tidewater and up the Peninsula throughout Friday afternoon.

Marine warnings expired for areas of the Chesapeake Bay and the James River — on the Chesapeake Bay from Smith Point to Windmill Point, and from Windmill Point to New Point Comfort, and on the James River from the James River Bridge to the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, and from Jamestown to the James River Bridge.

There had been a tornado warning for Southampton County, Isle of Wight County, Surry County and Sussex County until 4:45 p.m. Friday and tornado warnings for areas of northeastern North Carolina until 5 p.m. Flash flood warnings are also in effect for Suffolk and areas of northeastern North Carolina.

“When we get hit with heavy rain like this with this storm coming through, yeah these roads flood out,” said Surry County resident Jeff Craddock. “I’ll say it was six inches deep over the road, and depending on how well it drains off from other places, probably won’t be long before the swamp floods over the road. Fortunately, we didn’t get what they got down south. You know, Florida man, I wouldn’t want to be there.”

Most of the region remained under a tornado watch throughout the day, which expired at 8 p.m.

A WAVY viewer shared a photo of the rain pouring down in Courtland, in Southampton County, where there are reports of widespread flooding.

At one point, more than 3,700 Dominion Energy customers were without power.

The Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General testifies about "serious deficiencies."

WASHINGTON D.C., DC — After months of scandal and upheaval and reports of substandard care at the Hampton Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, lawmakers on Tuesday worked to get some answers.

The center's top three officials were reassigned in July after the VA Office of Inspector General (OIG) found "widespread failures related to facility leaders' responses to clinical care concerns."

Tuesday, lawmakers heard testimony from the Deputy Assistant Inspector General.

"Over the past three and half years, the OIG has published several reports highlighting serious deficiencies at the Hampton VA that substantiated a range of allegations related to inadequate clinical care and revealed that leaders lacked a basic understanding of the quality assurances processes that support the delivery of safe health care," said Dr. Jennifer Baptiste.

The House Veterans Affairs Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations held a hearing entitled: "What has Happened to Hampton?"

The panel's chair — Rep. Jen Kiggans (R-Virginia 2nd District) — said she and her staff spoke to 25 VA whistleblowers.

"Through this work I repeatedly heard reports of patient safety concerns, ineffective facility leadership, internal employee disputes, and dirty surgical operating rooms," she said.

For the first time, the public heard from Hampton's new Acting Executive Director Walt Dannenberg.

He said, "culture change does take time," but, he said he has implemented weekly staff town halls to hear directly from employees.

"My priority focus is creating an organization of high reliability. What that means is for an employee to share not only what is going well, but what is not going well," he said.

Last week, Secretary of Veterans Affairs Denis McDonough came to Hampton.

He said the Hampton VA Medical Center is now on "a good track," telling reporters, "we're making concrete improvements."
