Serious allegations have come to the forefront as a California high school volleyball program continues to receive forfeits on the court.

features transgender athlete AB Hernandez, who now faces three lawsuits from current and former teammates alleging their experiences sharing a locker room.

Two of those three, seniors Alyssa McPherson and Hadeel Hazameh, explained to that they would not longer be on the team if Hernandez remained part of it. The third plaintiff is Madison McPherson, the older sister of Alyssa who graduated last year.

The lawsuit has been filed against the Jurupa Unified School District, the California Interscholastic Federation and the California Department of Education. In the filing, the experience of sharing a team and locker room with the transgender athlete is the basis for it all.

“Plaintiffs have been intimidated by an intentionally hostile environment created by Defendants wherein they were bullied by school officials to censor their objections to competing with, and against, a male and to sharing intimate and private spaces with a male,” part of the lawsuit states.

Earlier this year, Hernandez competed at the California high school track and field championships, capturing several medals including gold in the triple jump and high jump.

Eight Teams Have Forfeited Games to Jurupa Valley volleyball

An eighth scheduled opponent forfeited a planned match with Jaguars, as the program is now seeking new teams to fill the voids in the schedule. The Jurupa Unified School District confirmed with Fox News that Patriot High School has forfeited a planned match set for September 26.

Both Jurupa Valley and Patriot are part of the same Jurupa Unified School District.

During an event earlier this month, three teams forfeited to the Jaguars. Aquinas, Yucaipa and San Dimas all refused to play them at the Freeway Games. Before that tournament, Jurupa Valley received forfeits from Riverside Poly, Rim of the World, Orange Vista and AB Miller.

Jurupa Valley is currently 11-6 and 3-0 in the league. They last played on September 24, besting Ramona in four sets. The next scheduled match is September 29 at Westridge.

Who Will Make the Ultimate Decision?

That is the million-dollar question surrounding this entire ordeal. All of the major sides involved, including California Governor Gavin Newsom, are passing it off to others.

Newsom, in a statement to Fox News Digital, suggested that the responsibility falls on the CIF, CDE and state legislature, and not his office.

“Neither (the CIF or CDE) is under the Governor’s authority,” the statement read. “CIF and CDE have stated they follow existing state law - a law that was passed in 2013 and signed by Govenor Jery Brown and in line with 21 other states. For the law to change, the legislature would need to send the Governor a bill. They have not.”

As for the school district, they released a statement in which it says, “School district do not write laws for the state of California, nor do they have the power to ignore them or change them.”

The statement continues, saying “as primarily state-funded agencies, they are required to follow them.” As for the CDE, they declined to comment seeing as it is a “pending litigation.”

President Donald Trump has previously threatened to withhold federal funding from California because of the involvement of Hernandez in sports.

The Pyrite Fire began on September 5, 2025, near Pyrite Street and Granite Hill Drive in Jurupa Valley. Cal Fire reported the fire reached 425 acres with 15 per cent containment at 12:32 p.m. on September 6. By 9:57 p.m. the same day, the incident had expanded to 521 acres with 20 per cent containment.

Evacuation warnings

Cal Fire confirmed that evacuation warnings remain in effect for zones JUR-0017, JUR-0018, JUR-0019, and JUR-0031. No mandatory evacuation orders are active as of September 7.

Firefighting resources

According to Cal Fire, 297 personnel are assigned to the Pyrite Fire. Resources include 40 engines, 8 hand crews, 2 helicopters, 2 water tenders, and multiple air tankers. A lane closure remains in effect for the #2 southbound lane on Sierra Avenue to allow fire suppression access.

Safety status

Cal Fire stated that no injuries or structural damage have been reported as of September 7, 2025.

How the fire started and what is it

The Pyrite Fire is among several incidents affecting Riverside County during California’s peak wildfire season. It began near Pyrite Street and Granite Hill Drive in Jurupa Valley, an area where residential neighborhoods border brush-covered hillsides and transportation corridors. Dry vegetation and high heat contributed to the rapid spread.

Like other California wildfires, the Pyrite Fire highlights ongoing challenges in Southern California as prolonged drought and heat create elevated fire risks across the region.

JURUPA VALLEY, CA — A brush fire in Jurupa Valley more than doubled in size overnight after triggering evacuation orders and an immediate fire response on Friday, according to Cal Fire officials.

The fire, dubbed the Pyrite Fire, had consumed 425 acres and was 15 percent contained as of 2:15 p.m. Saturday, fire officials said in an update.

"Firefighters made strong progress overnight, with hand crews cutting line around the fire perimeter and continuing today to strengthen containment lines," Cal Fire officials said.

The blaze was originally reported at 5:19 p.m. Friday near Pyrite Street and Granite Hill Drive, near California State Route 60 Freeway. Reports said the brush fire initially consumed about 15 acres of vegetation before expanding, according to Cal Fire.

As of Saturday morning, nearly 300 firefighters were on the scene, including eight hand crews. They were aided by water drops from two helicopters, fire officials said.

No injuries have been reported, and currently, no structures are under threat.

Evacuation orders were issued for nearby areas, with warnings set in place north of Sierra Avenue, south of Lauren Lane, east of Sierra Avenue, and west of Armstrong Road.

A lane closure is also in effect for the No. 2 southbound lane on Sierra Avenue to allow access for fire resources and equipment. Officials are urging motorists to use caution when re-entering the area, as crews and heavy equipment remain active.

An evacuation shelter has been established at Jurupa Valley High School, located at 10551 Bellegrave Ave. People under evacuation orders can bring their animals to the Western Riverside County/City Animal Shelter in Jurupa Valley.

The cause of the Pyrite Fire remains under investigation, officials said.

A number of evacuation orders for homes in the Jurupa Valley area were lifted on Saturday, hours after a large brush fire broke out in Riverside County.

The fire, which crews are calling the Pyrite Fire, was first reported just before 5:20 p.m. near Pyrite Street and Granite Hills Drive, according to Cal Fire firefighters. The flames were burning just north of the 60 Freeway in the hills above the Oak Quarry Golf Club.

At the time, crews said that the blaze had already burned 15 acres of vegetation in light, flashy fuels in the area. By 8 p.m. Sunday, the fire had grown to engulf 520 acres and was 10% contained, Riverside County firefighters said.

"Firefighters made strong progress overnight, with hand crews cutting line around the fire perimeter and continuing today to strengthen containment lines," firefighters said.

Cal Fire said Saturday morning that strong progress was made on the fire overnight.

At around 6:40 p.m. Friday, evacuation orders were issued for multiple residential zones in the area, but all have since been lifted. As of Saturday afternoon, evacuation warnings remained in place for those living in zones JUR-0017, JUR-0018, JUR-0019 and JUR-0031. A full list of orders and warnings can be seen here.

For those impacted, an evacuation shelter was established at Jurupa Valley High School, which is located at 10551 Bellegrave Avenue in Jurupa Valley.

No injuries have yet been reported and no structures have been damaged, firefighters said.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

After facing national scrutiny for competing in California's track and field finals, a transgender athlete from Jurupa Valley responded to the critics who believe she does not belong in girls' sports.

"They swear I'm like this crazy danger to society," athlete AB Hernandez said. "I'm just a normal kid going to school, playing sports."

This summer, Hernandez, who was a high school junior at the time, took home first-place medals in both state high jump and triple jump, and she placed second in the long jump event. During her journey to the state finals, Hernandez faced scrutiny from President Trump and other conservative politicians who claimed she had an unfair advantage. Demonstrators protested her participation in the state finals, some of whom carried signs that read "Save Girls' Sports," while an airplane also flew over the event pulling a banner that read, "No Boys in Girls' Sports."

"I think people just see one thing and they're like 'Oh, that's what you are,'" Hernandez said. "They don't take the time to get to know me. So, it's just a little frustrating."

Now in her senior year, Hernandez has faced more challenges as she competes with Jurupa Valley High School's volleyball team. So far this season, at least three high school teams have forfeited games rather than play against The Lady Jags.

"A team sport, I can't take that," she said. "It's a team effort. My team needs to be willing to fight with me and that's what it takes to win a team title."

On Thursday, Chaffey High School became one of two teams to compete against Hernandez so far this year, which was a sign of relief for Hernandez's mom, Nereyda.

"I'm grateful, thankful," Nereyda Hernandez said. "As a mom, it means a lot. Those girls mean a lot because I know it helps AB get through these hard times."

Nereyda said she initially did not accept her daughter's transition and understands other people's apprehension.

"It wasn't normal," Nereyda said. "I was raised Catholic. My parents were very strict with me. I have nothing but brothers. Like, in our household, it was always very [macho]."

Nereyda said she found out from other parents when AB began identifying as a girl in junior high. She questioned the school about why they allowed it to happen without her knowledge. She said she eventually changed her mind and understood the school's reasoning.

"Shoot, they're protecting the kids because of parents like me," Nereyda said. "We don't understand. We just get upset."

In time, Nereyda felt like she was only hurting her daughter by not letting AB be herself.

"I did talk to her about how dangerous it is and how difficult it was going to be but she's brave," Nereyda said. "When I saw her courage, I was like, 'OK, I'm going to stand behind you."

After four sets, Jurupa Valley defeated Chaffey High School.
