Friends Steven Goodpaster and Charlie Austin just don’t quit. Both have real jobs and real families. Yet each finds time to “moonlight” building parks in Powell (Steven) and enhancing the Beaver Creek water trail (Charlie).
Carol Evans of Legacy Parks Foundation reported that construction on another access point along the Beaver Creek Water Trail will begin this month for a third accessible boat launch and parking area – this one adjacent to the Knox County SportsPark in Karns. The project is set to be open in May, Evans said.
“In addition to this progress, Legacy Parks received a generous donation of 12 acres in Powell,” she wrote. “This property is planned to become a nature park, offering additional access to Beaver Creek, a playground and walking trails.”
Hmmm. Wonder what Steven Goodpaster has to say about this?
Sure enough, he had posted a “boy howdy” note with a concept plan of the new park. Steven said the 12-acre site is just south of the Weigel’s flagship store on Clinton Highway and extends along Beaver Creek.
And guess who was the first to respond?
“It’s going to happen,” said Charlie Austin.
“It’s going to be a great addition,” said Steven. “Can’t wait.”
Steven explained: “Several years ago, the Enhance Powell Committee worked with the East Tennessee Community Design Center to draft concept plans. Those looked to Weigel’s Farm for inspiration and included white three-rail fencing and a restroom building with a red barn look. Super cute and fitting the community.”
And Steven added: “I have faith that it’ll come. The community really does benefit from thoughtful additions like this. This park, in particular, will put to good use land that isn’t well suited for commercial development, but yet is readily accessible and supportive of use of the creek.
“The freshly remade Powell Sports Courts (behind Powell Middle School) are another great example of bringing outdoor recreation to the people. The courts are used nearly every day – and by a wide range of age groups. It’s awesome to see.”
Powell Sports Courts is not a part of the middle school campus, as many believe, but is owned by Knox County and operated by Parks & Recreation. Open dawn to dusk, the new park contains a basketball court, tennis courts and adjacent pickleball courts with plenty of close parking. Come up Shropshire off Emory Road, pass the post office on your left, the middle school on your right and turn right at the green sign “Powell Courts.”
KKB volunteers gather almost six tons of litter in February 2026
Keep Knoxville Beautiful (KKB) is taking over management and staffing of the city of Knoxville’s four recycling drop-off centers. The centers are at:
North Knoxville Cleanup was ‘day of inspiration’
Volunteers from Keep Knoxville Beautiful had a great turnout and great weather for the recent cleanup in the Whittle Springs area. Trees Knoxville planted new trees at Whittle Springs Middle School on the same day.
South Knoxville Cleanup is next
The tenth annual South Knoxville Community Cleanup will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2026, from 9 a.m. to noon. The event base will be at Chapman Square, 4409 Chapman Hwy., Knoxville. Ijams Nature Center is partnering with KKB to remove invasive plant species.
“We will be removing litter from South Knoxville roads, creeks and parks. Participants of any age are welcome! We look forward to seeing those who live, work or play in South Knoxville – as well as anyone who wants to lend a helping hand,” said KKB presser.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — A new pavilion and playscape at the city of Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness Gateway Park is open after years of planning and millions of dollars.
The new structure and plaza spans 23,000 square feet and contains four bathrooms, shade structures, a water refilling station, picnic tables, and play features, including slides and climbing areas, amid natural boulders and landscaping. It is located at the southern terminus of James White Parkway, where it ends at Sevierville Pike, and it is less than a half-mile from Baker Creek Bike Park.
Former Mayor Madeline Rogero joined current Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon at the grand opening of the park. Rogero proposed the initial funding for the Gateway Park.
In July 2024, the City Council approved an agreement to build the $4.6 million Urban Wilderness Gateway Park pavilion. This project then broke ground in December 2024.
The Gateway Park initially opened in July 2021, providing people with a place to park at the end of James White Parkway and a grand entrance to the Urban Wilderness. Ground was broken for the park in 2019, following $10 million being approved for the project.
The opening of the pavilion and playscape represents one of the last pieces in the city’s overall Urban Wilderness public amenities plan, which was proposed, approved and budgeted nearly a decade ago by Rogero. The new pavilion will also complement the Baker Creek Pavilion, which opened in March 2024.
Over the course of a decade, the city has invested about $11 million in creating an Urban Wilderness entryway experience and connection to the bike park. Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness includes more than 50 miles of trails and greenways that connect Ijams Nature Center, historic sites, quarries, adventure playgrounds, five city parks, and a 500-acre wildlife area.

The Special Olympics Tennessee 2026 State Winter Games in Gatlinburg, which had already been rescheduled from Jan. 25-27 to Feb. 1-3, have been canceled. The event will not be held this year and will not be rescheduled, according to the Special Olympics website.

When will the snow stop in Knoxville?
It will continue snowing throughout the day on Saturday, Jan. 31, according to National Weather Service meteorologist David Hotz.
The snowfall will diminish slightly on Saturday afternoon, turning from moderate to light snow. Flurries may continue to fall overnight, Hotz said.
No snow is expected on Sunday in Knoxville. The winter storm warning ends overnight.
How much could it snow in Knoxville?
Ahead of the snowstorm's arrival, the National Weather Service forecasted that Knoxville could have around 4 inches of snow. On Saturday, Hotz confirmed that Knox County would receive between 2 and 5 inches of snow, depending on which side of the county you live on. This matches the Jan. 30 projection.

Cold weather advisory in place
In addition to the region’s winter weather warning, a cold weather advisory has been set by the National Weather Service through 1 p.m. Feb. 1.
Temperatures today and Sunday are expected to be frigid in East Tennessee. The high on Jan. 31 in Knoxville is just 22 degrees, accompanied by wind gusts of up to 25 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service. The low is 9 degrees.
Knoxville will remain below freezing all day on Sunday, Feb. 1. The high is 29 degrees and the low is 12 degrees, with a wind chill of 9 degrees, according to the most recent forecast.
What is a cold weather advisory?
A cold weather advisory is issued by the National Weather Service when there are dangerously cold conditions. The advisory warns you to use caution when traveling outside. Be sure to dress appropriately with warm clothes, hats and gloves.
