Fussell & Colligan, a new civil law firm with a strong focus on personal injury and accident-related claims, has officially opened its doors at 1540 West Pinhook Road in Lafayette.

The firm assists clients with car, trucking, motorcycle, boating, and aviation accidents, as well as property damage and other insurance claims, offshore injury matters, workers’ compensation issues, malpractice claims, and general civil litigation.

Although the firm is newly established, its founders bring decades of combined experience and deep ties to Acadiana, having both graduated from the University of Louisiana before earning their law degrees at LSU (Fussell) and Loyola University New Orleans (Colligan). Their careers have been shaped by years of serving clients throughout the region, building a practice grounded in relationships, trust, and service to the community. The firm’s team also includes Crystal Ross of Abbeville, who oversees day-to-day operations for the office.

Outside of their legal work, the attorneys are actively involved in supporting local education and mentorship initiatives. Fussell & Colligan has sponsored the University of Louisiana’s Moot Court team and participates in the 52 Shepherds Program, which shows the firm’s commitment to investing in Acadiana’s next generation of leaders.

While the firm’s primary focus is personal injury, Fussell continues to provide experienced representation in oil and gas law across the region. Outside the firm, Colligan serves as a judge for the municipal courts of Church Point and Duson, working closely with local law enforcement and community leaders, while Fussell serves as an Assistant City-Parish Attorney for Lafayette.

LAFAYETTE, La. (KPEL News) — The Lafayette Parish School Board voted 5-2 Thursday night to close Ovey Comeaux High School, and now one number demands attention: 113%.

That’s how full Southside High School in Youngsville already is. It is one of only two schools in the entire Lafayette Parish School System currently above capacity, according to fall 2024 enrollment data from The Advocate. And under the plan the board just approved, roughly 208 additional students are headed there for the 2026-27 school year.

Southside opened in 2017 as a relief valve for an overcrowded parish, including Comeaux, which at that time was using portable buildings to handle overflow. About 900 students were rezoned to Southside when the school opened in August 2017. The move worked — for a while.

But Southside’s own enrollment has climbed steadily since then, and the school is now the largest high school in Lafayette Parish with nearly 1,900 students. The strategic planners LPSS hired last year told the board directly that an ideal school capacity sits between 80% and 85%. Southside is operating at 113%, well past that benchmark. The only other school above capacity in the parish is J. Wallace James Elementary, sitting at 102%.

Sending 208 more students to a campus already stretched thin is not a minor logistical footnote. It is the most immediate operational question the district now has to answer.

Superintendent Francis Touchet addressed the capacity question during a Wednesday morning interview on NewsTalk 96.5 KPEL, the day before the vote. He said his team analyzed all three receiving schools and that he personally visited each campus.

“I didn’t leave it up to my team. I went myself, and I looked at this,” Touchet said. “I have seen it with my own eyes.”

He did not express concern about capacity at Southside or either of the other two receiving schools. He also did not provide specific data, updated capacity figures, or a projection for what Southside’s utilization rate would look like with the additional 208 students factored in. The board voted without that figure on the table.

The district’s own strategic planners set a clear standard. With the vote now taken, the question shifts from whether the board would act to how the district plans to manage a school that was already over capacity absorbing roughly 208 additional students.

Southside is the most pressing piece of the capacity puzzle, but it is not the only one. Comeaux’s remaining students will be split between Acadiana High and Lafayette High as well, with rezoning maps already drawn and attached to Thursday’s agenda.

Lafayette High is better positioned to absorb the influx than Southside. The school moved into a new $120-million campus for the 2025-26 school year, and the Performing Arts Academy removed from Comeaux in May 2025 already relocated there. That campus has more room to work with.

Acadiana High will receive the Navy JROTC Magnet Academy under the approved plan, along with a portion of Comeaux’s remaining student body. The specific headcount headed to Acadiana has not been made public at the same level of detail as the Southside figure.

The case for closing Comeaux rested on real numbers. The school had been enrolling about 640 students in a building designed for roughly 1,700, running at less than half capacity. Over the past five years, enrollment dropped 42 percent, leaving it at roughly 38% capacity. LPSS is down roughly 850 students compared to last October, a decline that translates to approximately $10 million in lost state funding.

But the enrollment decline is not uniform across the parish. The Youngsville corridor, where Southside sits, has been one of the fastest-growing areas in all of Louisiana for more than a decade. The same population growth that made closing Comeaux look fiscally responsible on paper is the same force that has been filling Southside past its rated capacity.

The district is now managing two competing realities: a shrinking footprint in older parts of Lafayette and a population surge in the south. Routing 208 students toward an already-crowded campus is a tension the board resolved with Thursday’s vote but did not fully answer.

For families currently zoned to Southside, Thursday’s vote is not an abstraction. It means more students competing for seats in AP and dual enrollment courses. It means more congestion in hallways, parking lots, and cafeterias. It means a student-to-teacher ratio that was already 21:1 is likely to climb.

LPSS has not released a post-redistricting capacity projection for Southside. That number needs to be public before rezoning begins in earnest — and Southside families have every reason to ask for it now.

LAFAYETTE, La. (KPEL News) — The Lafayette Parish School Board voted 5-2 Thursday night to take Ovey Comeaux High School offline, closing the southwest Lafayette campus as a traditional high school.

The decision came 16 months after the board narrowly voted 5-4 to keep the school open, with the outcome this time shaped in part by the absence of two board members who voted against closure in 2024.

Students currently enrolled at Comeaux High will need to transfer to one of three receiving schools for the 2026-27 school year. LPSS has already drawn rezoning maps directing Comeaux families to Acadiana High School, Lafayette High School, or Southside High School, depending on their address. Those maps were attached to Thursday’s agenda before the vote took place.

The Navy JROTC Magnet Academy Program, one of Comeaux’s signature offerings, will move to Acadiana High School under the approved plan. The school’s Performing Arts Academy was voted off the Comeaux campus in May 2025 and relocated to Lafayette High School.

The physical campus on the west side of Lafayette will not sit empty. Under the plan approved Thursday, the building will be renovated to house the W.D. & Mary Baker Smith Career Center and the E.J. Sam Accelerated School. LPSS expects those programs to begin serving students in the new facility no later than the 2028-29 school year.

The school’s athletic facilities are also part of the plan, set to be converted into a centralized Lafayette Parish Schools Sports Complex available to schools across the district.

The campus will carry a new name going forward: the Ovey Comeaux Workforce Innovation Academy.

Superintendent Francis Touchet laid out his reasoning ahead of Thursday’s vote, citing two factors driving the decision. The first is enrollment. Comeaux’s student population has fallen by roughly 500 students since the 2018-19 school year, a decline that accelerated after about 900 students were rezoned to Southside High when that campus opened in 2016-17. Touchet said he did not see a realistic path to reversing that trend.

The second factor is capacity at the Career Center. Touchet told KPEL, approximately 450 students want to attend the Career Center but cannot get in because the facility is already full. Renovating the existing building to meet the district’s needs would cost between $6 million and $10 million, a figure Touchet called fiscally irresponsible.

Closing the Comeaux campus saves the district’s General Fund an estimated $2,069,976 per year.

Thursday’s meeting took place without two board members who voted against closing Comeaux in 2024. Board Member Jeremy Hidalgo, who represents a district that includes many Comeaux families, was out of state attending a conference he said had been scheduled since October 2025, months before the agenda item was created. Board Member Joshua Edmond was also out of town.

According to KATC, the 2024 vote against closure included Hidalgo, Edmond, Amy Trahan, Kate Labue, and David LeJeune. Trahan and LeJeune were in town for Thursday’s meeting. Labue placed the closure item on Thursday’s agenda.

Hidalgo posted on Facebook that his absence from the meeting did not change his view on the school. Board Member Britt Latiolais, who voted for closure in 2024, said Hidalgo could have flown to his conference the following day. Board Member Chad Desormeaux noted before the meeting that any attending member could make a motion to postpone.

A majority of board members present was required to pass the item. With a quorum set at five members, the threshold for passage shifted based on how many members attended.

The vote Thursday was the second time the Lafayette Parish School Board has formally considered closing Ovey Comeaux High School. The first came in November 2024, when the board voted 5-4 to keep the school open after an emotionally charged meeting packed with students, parents, and alumni. That vote came the same day state scores showed Comeaux had earned an A rating and the most academic growth of any school in the district.

The 2024 recommendation came from Civic Solutions Group, a strategic planning firm LPSS hired to help the district address a $38.2 million budget shortfall. CSG recommended closing several schools, including Comeaux, based on declining enrollment and per-student facility costs. The board rejected that specific recommendation at the time.
