The Winn-Dixie Co. is turning seven of its Harveys Supermarket locations in Florida and Georgia into Winn-Dixie stores. Two are in Lakeland.

The Jacksonville grocer announced the conversions Monday, saying they are part of a larger effort to bring its stores under a singular banner as it undergoes a “broader brand transformation.”

Anthony Hucker, the chairman and CEO of The Winn-Dixie Co., says in a statement that bringing Harveys under the Winn-Dixie banner “allows us to build on that shared legacy while continuing to invest in our stores, our associates and the quality, value and fresh offerings our customers count on.”

The two local stores are at 2630 US Highway 92 and at 1305 Ariana St. W. The others include two in Jacksonville and one each in Lake City, Ocala and Folkston, Georgia.

The rebranded stores, the company says, will get a new look “designed to feel more modern, confident and connected to the way families shop today.” Current Harveys shopper will be able to transfer their rewards points. The goal, the company says, is a seamless transition.

The Winn-Dixie Co. operated as Southeastern Grocers until the beginning of this year, when it officially changed its name.

The changeover was announced in October and the company said at the time it would focus on its Florida and Georgia markets. As part of that process, it sold 32 Winn-Dixie stores and eight Harveys Supermarkets, in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi.

It had sold about 400 of its Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores to Aldi in 2023.

A company spokesperson did not respond to questions about how many Harveys stores will remain after the transformations and how many total stores the company currently owned. According the changeover statement, the rebranded company would operate 130 grocery stores and 140 freestanding and grocery-adjacent liquor stores.

Winn-Dixie traces its roots back to the 1920s, when the Davis family opened a store in Miami and began expanding with other stores, according to a 2023 story in the Jacksonville Daily Record, sister paper of the Business Observer.

The company established its headquarters in Jacksonville in 1944 and after a series of transactions, was named Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. in 1955.

Winn-Dixie struggled in the early 2000s and went through a Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization in 2005 and 2006.

Then in 2012 it merged with Bi-Lo Holdings to form Southeastern Grocers.

Southeastern went through a prepackaged Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization in 2018, with a group of investment funds taking control of the company.

The company filed plans for an initial public offering in 2020 but pulled the IPO off the market in January 2021, and it had been the subject of buyout rumors since that time, the Jacksonville Daily Record reported.

ORLANDO, Fla. – Six Florida supermarkets are set to become Winn-Dixie stores, according to the company this week.

In a release on Monday, officials announced that seven total Harveys Supermarket locations across Florida and southern Georgia will be converted to the Winn-Dixie brand as part of the company’s mission to bring its stores “together under one trusted name.”

“The conversions mark another step forward in the company’s evolution to The Winn-Dixie Company, reflecting a sharpened focus on growing the Winn-Dixie brand and delivering a more unified grocery experience for customers,” the release reads.

The Harveys Supermarket locations set to be converted to Winn-Dixie include the following:

According to the release, these stores will reflect Winn-Dixie’s new look while stocking Own Brand products, prepared foods and the grocer’s signature “Lip Lickin’ Chicken” in the deli section.

Furthermore, Harveys Rewards customers may transfer their existing points over to the Winn-Dixie Rewards app, where they can also access weekly digital deals, planning tools and savings that turn rewards into dollars off groceries.

To do so, customers only have to download the Winn-Dixie app and enter their phone number — no new sign-up required, officials added.

“For more than a century, Winn-Dixie and Harveys have earned the trust of families and communities across our region,” The Winn-Dixie Company CEO Anthony Hucker said. “Bringing our stores together under one iconic name, Winn-Dixie, allows us to build on that shared legacy while continuing to invest in our stores, our associates and the quality, value and fresh offerings our customers count on.”

No specific dates have been provided for the upcoming conversions, though the company noted it will release more updates as they continue.

Lakeland, Florida, has just been named the fastest-growing “boomtown” in America. East of Tampa and Southwest of Orlando, moveBuddha has found that this I-94 waypoint has the fastest-growing population in the United States at 34.4%.

To find this out, moveBuddha recently compiled Census data from 2014 to 2024, along with mover interest over 2025, to determine which U.S. cities are transforming their rapid growth into long-term prosperity.

Along with Lakeland’s 10-year population growth, the popular Florida city has a move-in-to-out ratio of 1.33, meaning that 1.33 new residents move in for every exit. This suggests that Lakeland’s industrial boom is going to last.

The Polk County city is beloved for its proximity to antique shops, Art Deco architecture, lakes, and colleges. According to Ryan Carrigan, founder of moveBuddha, the finding that Lakeland was the top boomtown was interesting for several reasons.

"We found it really interesting that Lakeland wasn’t just growing fast, but it was still attracting people even after moving slowed down nationally. When you see a city grow by more than 34% over a decade and still bring in more people than it loses, it tells you this isn’t a temporary spike. People are choosing to stay," Carrigan told Southern Living via email.

The reason Lakeland might be so popular could be due to its close connection to urban areas, while also not being congested.

"What the data suggests is that movers are drawn to places that feel connected but not overwhelmed," Carrigan explained. "Lakeland sits between Tampa and Orlando, so people can stay tied into those job markets without having to live in the middle of them. They’re choosing places where growth still feels possible, where they can find a home, settle in, and feel like they arrived at the right moment."These top 10 metros maintain an above-average move-in ratio at 1.12; Raleigh, North Carolina, is the highest at 1.59.

The Detroit Tigers first came to train in Lakeland in 1934, and ended up signing an initial 37-year contract with the city — so needless to say, that first meeting went well.
