HCA Florida Healthcare completes purchase of Lehigh Regional Medical Center and announces construction of HCA Florida Alico Emergency.
February 27, 2025 – HCA Florida Healthcare, one of the state’s leading health systems, today announced it has completed the purchase of Lehigh Regional Medical Center from California-based Prime Healthcare. The 53-bed hospital in Lehigh Acres, Florida, has operated in Lee County and surrounding counties since 1965.
“This hospital and associated physician practices are a wonderful complimentary addition to our existing 17 hospitals within our division along Florida’s West Coast and will serve as a catalyst for growth as we further expand our services and programs in Lee County,” said Jyric Sims, Ph.D. president of HCA Healthcare West Florida Division. “We are also excited to announce construction of the hospital’s first freestanding emergency room, HCA Florida Alico Emergency, on Alico Road near Three Oaks Parkway with an anticipated opening in 2026.
HCA Florida Healthcare operates more than 650 affiliated sites of care across the Sunshine State. The $134.5 million invested in the acquisition of Lehigh Regional Medical Center and the construction of the new HCA Florida Alico Emergency along with the two existing freestanding emergency rooms in Lee County, HCA Florida Cape Coral Emergency and HCA Florida West Fort Myers Emergency, will further expand the network’s acute care footprint in the county. HCA Florida Healthcare also operates multiple ambulatory surgery centers and other services in the area.
The hospital has been renamed HCA Florida Lehigh Hospital and will be part of the HCA Healthcare West Florida Division, which serves communities along the West Coast from Lee County north through Citrus County.
Paige Laughlin has been named chief executive officer of the hospital. Other leadership appointments include Cheryl McIntire, chief financial officer, Brian Hummel, MD, chief medical officer, Harry Walk, RN, chief nursing officer and Amanda Jackson, vice president human resources.
In becoming part of HCA Healthcare, Lehigh Regional Medical Center patients and the Lehigh Acres community will now have access to the integrated, high-quality specialized care that HCA Florida Healthcare provided through more than 11.6 million patient encounters. Lehigh Regional Medical Center currently provides specialty care services, including Emergency Services, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, General Surgery, Nephrology and Orthopedics. Lehigh Acres residents are growing increasingly concerned about their safety and some say they fear leaving their homes because of danger on the roads.
In January, there were at least four reported deaths within a week in Lehigh Acres as a result of motor accidents.
The other January road fatalities in Lee County happened in various locations in Fort Myers, North Fort Myers and Cape Coral, with at least three occurring on U.S. 41.
Racing risks: Residents fed up with reckless driving
Samantha Wells, Lehigh Acres resident and mother of three, said that it is “infuriating to see the lack of respect for human life” that reckless drivers have.
“It’s mind-blowing to me that people can just lack the moral compass and understanding that there are people’s children and loved ones in the other vehicles that they share the roads with,” Wells said.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office said it has worked with the Florida Highway Patrol in conducting more traffic stops in Lehigh Acres as a means of remedying concerns and complaints.
Capt. Todd Olmer of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said that reckless driving and overall crashes in Lehigh Acres can be a result of any number of reasons: general speeding, use of phones while driving, weather, etc.
Olmer also said that these traffic concerns are not specific to any particular area of Southwest Florida, and crashes and fatalities can happen anywhere.
According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Crash Dashboard, there were about 15,500 total crashes in Lee County in 2023, 109 of which were fatal. However, there were about 14,500 crashes in 2024, 118 of which were fatal.
Some have expressed fear about particular roads such as State Road 82 and Lee Boulevard.
Residents of Lehigh have shared their fears about driving on roads in Lehigh on a community page on Facebook that has more than 60,000 members.
One member of the group, Melanie Kurtoglu, posted dash cam footage that depicts a driver weaving in and out of traffic on Lee Boulevard.
Kurtoglu wrote “There is absolutely no reason to be driving like this. Have you not seen or do you not care about the fatalities these last couple of days. How would you feel if you caused a fatal crash? If you’re driving like this, it’s not a question of if you’ll crash, it’s when.”
In an interview with Kurtoglu, who has lived in Lehigh Acres for 24 years, she also said that driving on State Road 82 is “no joke.”
“There’s really no reason to drive so aggressively that you could potentially cause an accident. It’s scary. My kids are going to be driving soon, and I really fear for them,” she said.
Kurtoglu said that she has even noticed that drivers don’t slow down in school zones where it is against Florida statute to drive more than 20 mph.
Cape Coral implemented the use of school zone speed cameras last month.
Speeding past safety: Officials push for more school zone cameras
One Lee County commissioner, Cecil Pendergrass, said he wants the cameras to be used in every school zone across unincorporated Lee County.
Pendergrass raised the issue at a board of commissioners meeting on Feb. 4.
"It's not to make money. It's about keeping kids safe at schools," Pendergrass said at the meeting.
Samantha Wells is a southwest Florida resident of more than 10 years, and a Lehigh Acres resident of three years.
“I have never lived anywhere where the traffic is this bad. I’ve been in places where the congestion is terrible, but the accidents and fatalities, I’ve never experienced anything like this,” she said.
Wells said she believes that the roads in Southwest Florida are not suitable for the increasing population in the region.
“I don’t know what the answer is, but something needs to be done,” Wells said.
Between 2010 and 2023, the population of Fort Myers increased by about 56%, according to the United States Census Bureau.
Growing Pains: Road Expansions Aim to Ease Traffic Woes
To improve the level of mobility and reduce congestion in eastern Lee County, the Lee County Department of Transportation is planning to extend the existing Alico Road just north of San Carlos Park.
Construction on the project is anticipated to begin in late 2025 and will connect Alico Road to State Road 82. The project also includes four-laning the section of Sunshine Boulevard that connects to State Road 82, according to Lee DOT.

In her video, posted on her TikTok profile @guajira40, Maivi described her experience of living in Lehigh with a list of problems that, according to her, few mention before moving. "Your hair is going to fall out. You can take the rosemary plant, squeeze it, and apply the extract to your head, but your hair is still going to fall out in clumps," she stated.
He also warned about well water: "The entire floor gets stained, the bathrooms get stained with that water because it's well water, and even if you have it treated, wherever, it still stains." He added that he has tried "all the liquids you have recommended to me" without success and that he cleans almost every day because he has "mental issues with cleanliness."
Regarding the insect infestation, he stated that it is essential to fumigate regularly. "Here, fumigation is necessary. Fumigate all week or have a pest control specialist come every three months, which is what I do and I recommend it to everyone." Furthermore, he warned about "the flies that you've never seen in your life, species you didn't even know existed because they are huge."
The reactions: between support and rejection
Maivi's video quickly went viral, garnering hundreds of comments. Some users agreed with her description, noting that well water can stain bathrooms due to the presence of iron, manganese, and other minerals. Others claimed they haven't encountered these issues at home because they installed an adequate filtration system. Others sarcastically remarked that her video was a strategy to prevent more people from moving to Lehigh, insisting that the area remains a more affordable option than Miami.
Maivi replies, "I'm not leaving because I don't feel like it."
In response to the attacks, Maivi decided to address them in new videos with a firm stance: "I’m not going to Miami because I don’t want to, it's not my American desire. I lived in Miami for 25 years, I lived in Hialeah, I lived in the North West, and in the end, I lived in Palmetto Bay, near Pinecrest. I loved it, I really like Miami, but I adore my countryside."
He explained that his video was, in part, an experiment to generate interactions on social media and promote his business. "We are testing the creation of controversial content to see if it boosts sales of the two-in-one mop," he said.

In another video, Maivi expressed her disappointment that her followers do not share with the same intensity the videos where she promotes local businesses in Lehigh without charging them. "If the energy, the comments, and the times this video gets shared were the same when I promote someone who sells corn or a cake, it would greatly help people here in Lehigh," she stated.
He assured that in the community, the interest in controversy prevails over support for small businesses. "Definitely, Lehigh is not ready for that. What people really enjoy here is gossip and drama," he stated.

The Southwest Florida Chapter of the Florida Public Relations Association marked a significant milestone Jan. 27 with a special 40th Anniversary Celebration, honoring four decades of the chapter’s success in advancing public relations and fostering professional growth in Southwest Florida and across the state.
Held at Ter-Tinis, the event brought together past and present members, chapter leaders and guests for an evening of recognition, reflection and celebration. Special guests included FPRA State President Julie Frey, APR, CPRC, who joined chapter leaders in highlighting the chapter’s legacy.
“As the 13th chapter chartered through the state, your impact is truly extraordinary,” said Frey. “The Southwest Florida Chapter has set a high standard for excellence in public relations.”
Founded in 1985, the Southwest Florida Chapter began with a vision to cultivate a strong network of public relations professionals in the area. Over the years, it has grown into a thriving organization committed to professional advancements. One of its significant achievements includes establishing a student chapter at Florida Gulf Coast University, fostering the next generation of public relations professionals.
The evening featured a special video presentation highlighting the chapter’s history, with past presidents sharing their reflections.
