JUNEAU, Wis. – Severe weather slammed several states in the Upper Midwest Thursday, dropping a few funnel clouds and likely tornadoes in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
The worst damage so far has been reported in the Juneau and Mayville areas of Wisconsin, where at least one tornado was reported.
Tornado spotted in southern Wisconsin
A tornado was spotted in Juneau, Wisconsin, on Thursday.
The local sheriff's department reported multiple homes and businesses were damaged, with significant power outages in Dodge, Fond du Lac and Sheboygan counties.
Photos from Juneau showed homes with roof damage and plenty of snapped trees.
The Mayville Fire Department reported responding to numerous gas leaks as well as buildings that had structural damage.
The local sheriff said crews responded to several reports of injuries, but none appeared to be life-threatening.
Storms began afternoon tearing into Minneapolis
Photos and videos from the area showed ominous clouds ahead of the storms moving into the Minneapolis area, where radar-indicated rotation triggered a Tornado Warning.
Timelapse video showed the storms moving into the city on Thursday afternoon.
Video from the city showed dark storm clouds moving in as tornado sirens sounded in the background.
The storms turned dangerous, with video showing a funnel cloud forming over Benson, Minnesota.
As the storms moved east, Wisconsin began getting hit with hail and severe weather.
Photos from New Richmond showed a possible tornado forming.

A confirmed tornado was reported there Thursday afternoon, according to the FOX Forecast Center.
In Madison, video showed hail hitting a deck, pinging off windows with a clunk.
The severe weather continued to plow eastward.
Storms will also hit Indianapolis, where racers are qualifying for the Indy 500.

Almost 1,000 unionized nurses at UnityPoint Health-Meriter Hospital in Madison could go on strike later this month.
The nurses are represented by the Service Employees International Union. They say they’ve been negotiating a new contract with the hospital since January.
The union plans to strike from May 27 until June 1 if the hospital doesn’t meet certain contract demands.

The hospital will have to budge on three things to avert a strike, said Pat Raes, president of SEIU Wisconsin. She said the union is seeking safe nurse-to-patient staffing ratios, hospital safety measures and higher pay for senior staff, aimed at retention.
Physical safety a concern for nurses, union says
“The nurses are truly concerned about safety,” Raes said.
Along with her role with the union, she said she has worked as a nurse at Meriter for 36 years.
She said management hasn’t done enough to address nurses’ concerns about staffing levels and physical safety at the hospital.
“We’re seeing more and more guns and knives come into the hospital than we’ve ever seen before,” she said. “Ever since we saw COVID happen, people have lost a lot of coping and communication skills.”
She said understaffed overnight shifts and low retention of seasoned nurses are contributing to worsening workplace safety.
“We have senior staff leaving all the time for different jobs,” she said.
She said having experienced staff’s “institutional knowledge and critical thinking, and not all-new nurses on the off-shifts” improves patient safety.
Hospital has offered wage increase over 2 years
Meanwhile, the hospital offered wage increases for 2025 and 2026 in its proposed contract, averaging to 3.68 percent a year.
With those increases, a spokesperson told WPR, the average full-time nurse’s salary would grow from $101,300 to over $108,900.
The hospital is also offering higher pay for night, weekend and on-call shifts, the spokesperson said.
“We are disheartened that the union has chosen to use such a disruptive tactic, as we know that a work stoppage can cause stress on our team members and our community,” said Sherry Casali, UnityPoint’s chief nursing officer for the Madison market.
Contingency plan in place as negotiations continue
Casali said the hospital has a “contingency plan to ensure that normal operations continue” during a strike.
“While we do not believe a strike is in the best interest of our ongoing negotiations with the union, we respect our team members and their rights,” she said.
Raes said the early notification of a possible strike was made to give the hospital time to prepare.
“We very much want to avoid a strike. We are hoping for a deal,” she said, adding that two bargaining days are left before May 27.
Meriter was founded about a century ago, originally as Madison General Hospital. It was acquired by Iowa-based hospital network UnityPoint Health in 2014. In addition to the Madison hospital, UnityPoint owns 14 hospitals in Iowa and two in Illinois.

Before Jessie Pung moved to Madison in 2021 to take a job as the senior director of development for athletics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she heard rave reviews about Dane County. Madison has a constant presence on “best places to live” (including Livability’s Top 100 Best Places to Live) and “best college town” lists, and she discovered it’s not just buzz.
“There’s this real fondness of the city and the natural beauty of the lakes,” Pung says. “Every time we have visiting teams in town, we hear people say, ‘I love coming to Madison.’”
Madison is unique because it is located on an isthmus, tucked between lakes Mendota and Monona. Pung loves being surrounded by the water, and having snow skiing close by, like the snowy slopes beckoning at Tyrol Basin Ski and Snowboard Area 40 minutes west of the city.
A former college track and field athlete, Pung along with her husband also set out to explore the many scenic, well-kept trails close to home, with one of her favorites being the Pheasant Branch Conservancy, a nature area with hiking and biking trails and home to wildlife like deer and sandhill cranes.
“You have all these great things to do outdoors that are close to home plus you have nightlife and shopping and can go restaurant hopping. I really appreciate the versatility of Madison,” Pung says.
Some of her favorite hangouts are Vintage Brewing Co. for craft beer and elevated bar food, and Ancora Cafe + Bakery, a cute locally owned spot that serves lattes, all-day brunch and homemade baked goods.
Moving to Madison has also helped Pung grow her career. She’s a member of Madison Magnet, a young professional organization that offers networking opportunities and professional development.
Sweet Life in Monroe
In 2020, Kevin and Kelsey Visel noticed a building was for sale on the Historic Square in Monroe. It wasn’t long before they came up with the idea to buy it, rehab it and turn it into a fun doughnut shop. Now, Sunrise Donut Café is a prime local gathering spot in Monroe, where people of all ages come together to enjoy classic doughnuts like chocolate, maple and glazed, as well as an array of toppings, drizzles and rotating weekly features.
“There are wonderful people around every corner who live out a neighborly Midwest lifestyle,” says Kevin Visel, a commercial real estate broker.
Owning a small business in Monroe, he explains, has created plenty of opportunities to engage with neighbors and plug into the community.
Food Scenes
Visel says he and his wife appreciate Monroe’s family-friendly draw: “Monroe is a safe community that has some size to it, yet it has maintained a small-town feel, which makes it a great place to raise kids,” he says.
On weekends, the Visel family enjoys visiting the historic downtown square, which is a vibrant district for shopping and community events, like the farmers market and outdoor summer concerts. They also love the bike paths that connect to other communities, once taking a daylong bike ride to Madison and biking home the following day.
“We really enjoy spending time outside in the rolling hills of the Green County countryside,” he says. “This region has so much natural beauty, which we try to appreciate every day.”

The album features jazz greats Justin Brown, Gene Coye, and Benjamin Ring on drums, Sharada Shashidar on vocals, and Devin Daniels on saxophone.
