PLANNING THE NEXT 24 HOURS: For today, widespread precipitation is expected for everyone. It will be mostly snow for areas north of The Dells, especially by the afternoon. However, temperatures will climb into the 40s for far southern Wisconsin today, which may produce a few thunderstorms closer to Illinois with a few possibly bringing strong wind gusts along with some hail.

As temperatures drop, the rain/mix will turn over to snow as winds pick up and turn out of the northwest. This will occur later in the afternoon and evening, but we also will see a brief dry period during this time.

Madison and surrounding areas may not see consistent falling snow until around 9pm to midnight, but snow will be heavy from midnight through Monday morning. Winds could be gusting up to 30-50 miles per hour as snow fall rates could be between 2-4" per hour. Snow will slowly taper off from west to east throughout the late morning and afternoon Monday. In the end, areas north of The Dells will likely see over a foot of snow, areas near and just south of The Dells will see 8 to 12 inches, Madison and areas to the west will see 4 to 8 inches, and areas south and east of Madison will see 2 to 6 inches.

We also will see very cold temperatures to start off the work week with wind chills below see all day Monday. They will then get even colder for Tuesday morning with wind chills possibly in the negative teens.

EXTENDED FORECAST: After the winter storm moves through, there will be a small chance of some quick snow showers Tuesday night. That will be the last chance of snow in the forecast with milder temperatures and relatively dry conditions by the end of the week and the weekend.

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - Quiet conditions will continue through today as high pressure remains over the area, but clouds will continue to increase as the next storm system begins to approach. Late this afternoon, some light snow may begin across southern Wisconsin, although dry air near the surface may delay precipitation at first. By Saturday evening, the atmosphere should become moist enough for snow to become more widespread, with about 1 to 3 inches of accumulation possible, mainly toward central Wisconsin. As warmer air moves in aloft later in the evening, the snow will transition to a mix of precipitation and freezing rain, and then to plain rain across southern Wisconsin by around midnight. Ice accumulations around a tenth of an inch are possible, with locally higher amounts if freezing rain lingers. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for portions of the area for this first phase.

What’s Coming Up...

On Sunday, the low pressure system is expected to track along the southern border of Wisconsin. Warmer air and breezy southerly winds will move into the region, and a dry slot may develop that could limit precipitation across much of southern Wisconsin. Some areas may experience patchy drizzle, while northern portions of the area could remain near a sharp temperature gradient where snow or mixed precipitation is still possible. As temperatures warm and atmospheric instability increases, there is also a chance for elevated thunderstorms Sunday afternoon, especially south of Interstate 94, with a few storms potentially producing small hail.

Late Sunday afternoon through Monday, the storm will transition into its main winter phase as colder air wraps around the system. There may briefly be some freezing drizzle at the onset before the precipitation changes to all snow. This period is expected to bring the bulk of the snowfall to southern Wisconsin, with totals generally ranging from 5 to 9 inches and the highest amounts likely over central to east-central Wisconsin. Strong winds with gusts up to around 40-45 mph will also develop (later Sunday into Monday), leading to blowing and drifting snow and significantly reduced visibility. Snow may start out wet Sunday but will become drier by Monday as colder air moves in. Because of these potential impacts, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Sunday afternoon through Monday evening.

Looking Ahead...

After the storm moves out, very cold temperatures are expected Monday night, with lows dropping into the single digits. Another chance for light snow may arrive Tuesday night into Wednesday as a quick-moving disturbance passes through the region. Temperatures should gradually return to near normal by midweek, with highs in the 40s and lows in the lower 30s expected later in the week.
