MESA, AZ (AZFamily) — Federal investigators say a pilot reported engine problems moments before a small plane crashed along a canal road behind several homes in Mesa on Monday morning.

Just after 8:30 a.m., authorities received multiple reports of a plane crash near Greenfield and McKellips roads in Mesa, just southwest of Falcon Field Airport. After searching the area, rescue crews found the plane on a canal access road near a neighborhood.

The two people on board had already exited the aircraft unharmed when first responders arrived.

“Whatever issues they were experiencing, they made the decision to try to land safely on the canal bank,” said Marrisa Ramirez-Ramos with the Mesa Fire and Medical Department.

The FAA identified the aircraft as a Piper PA-28. Online records show it’s registered to the CAE Aviation Academy.

The single-engine plane crashed into a wall dividing the canal from a home, damaging pool equipment and a city gas line. City crews responded to make sure the line was repaired, and no evacuations were necessary.

“It looked like it hit the wall and wall crumbled over,” said neighbor Mark Sherman. “They probably saw canal said this is our best bet lets go ahead and lets land on canal.”

Wendy Wise lives down the block and said this is the third plane in the past year to crash out of Falcon Field.

“It could have hit my house; absolutely could have hit any of the houses that sit along the canal. I applaud the pilot for being able to put it down without crashing into a house and for looking for a safe place to put it down where he is not in middle of road or in somebody’s house,” Wise said.

Pilot and Embry-Riddle professor Cary Grant said the fact that the plane landed safely and no one was hurt shows that the pilot followed his training in an emergency.

“You’re looking for whatever you can, whether it’s road or clearing at low altitude. You don’t have a lot of choices so you have to make a very quick decision on where you put down airplane. So, I’d say crew did excellent job of getting plane down,” said Grant.

Federal investigators will work to determine what led to the crash.

MESA, AZ — Authorities are investigating after a small plane landed in an area near Falcon Field in Mesa on Monday morning.

The incident occurred before 9 a.m. Monday.

Mesa Fire Department officials say unknown issues led to an unplanned landing in a canal area near McKellips Road between Val Vista Drive and Greenfield Road.

As the plane was landing along the canal bank, the plane struck a portion of a residential wall, impacting some gas lines and pool equipment.

Crews were called in to assess the damage to the equipment and wall, but no evacuations had to be done in the area.

Officials say two people were on the plane at the time of the incident, and both exited the plane without injury.

No other injuries were reported on the ground.

The investigation is ongoing, and it's unclear what issues the plane experienced.

Neighbors in the area say they've been concerned with the number of planes coming in and out of Falcon Field, as this is the third plane crash in the area in the last year.

The city of Mesa send the following statement about the crash to ABC15:

“Earlier today, a small aircraft on a training flight made an emergency landing on a canal path near E. McClellan Cir. and N. Ogden. This incident is under investigation, and the City of Mesa cannot comment further while that review is underway.

“Falcon Field is a public-use airport that receives Federal funding for capital improvements. As a condition of that funding, the City cannot place restrictions on the number of flight operations by any aeronautical user, including flight training.”

CAE flight school also sent us the following statement:

"An incident has occurred earlier today involving a CAE training aircraft near Falcon Field Airport in Mesa, Arizona. No injuries were reported. The FAA has been notified and is conducting a full investigation.

Our training programs and flight operations meet the highest standards of safety, and follow all regulatory requirements, in full compliance with FAA regulations and established safety protocols.

While the investigation is ongoing, we are unable to share further details."

No one was hurt when a small plane went down on Monday near Falcon Field in Mesa.

What we know:

The incident happened on Nov. 17 in a residential area near McClellan Circle and Ogden Road.

The Fire and Medical Department says the plane landed next to a canal and struck a block wall, damaging the wall and a resident's pool equipment.

"The pool equipment did have a gas line and City of Mesa utilities responded to the scene," firefighters said.

Two people who were on board the plane were not hurt. No one on the ground was injured. No homes in the area were evacuated.

"Walls can be fixed, pool equipment can be replaced, but people can't, and that's a concern that we have that the next time, you know, it could be in somebody's house," said Wendy Wise, who has lived in the area for decades.

Wise, who lives a few houses down from the crash scene, said this is not the first time planes have made emergency landings in the canal area.

"There is a flight school that does touch-and-go's out of Falcon Field on a daily basis. There are hundreds of planes that are in the air over our area. They're constantly there. It's concerning. That's just a lot of inexperienced pilots flying over homes," Wise said. "I take that risk that I live next door to an airport, but when you put that many planes in the air, constantly touching and going on a daily basis, at some point, you're going to have somebody that's inexperienced that's going to end up either in somebody's house or on the canal, or on a major street."

We asked officials with Falcon Field how many training flights take off and land at the airport, and whether any restrictions are in place.

Officials with that airport have yet to respond.
