MESQUITE, Texas — Ashley Furniture Inds. has confirmed plans to cease manufacturing at its facility in Mesquite, Texas, a move that will affect 266 employees, according to a WARN Act filed by the company with the Texas Workforce Commission.
In a statement to Furniture Today, the company said it is consolidating manufacturing operations at the Mesquite facility with production at other Ashley manufacturing locations. The facility will continue operating as a distribution center.
It did not say where production from the Mesquite facility will be shifted.

Manufacturing operations at the Mesquite facility will conclude May 7,” the company said. “Affected employees are being offered opportunities for available positions at other Ashley facilities, including roles in the Mesquite Distribution Center.
“This decision reflects Ashley’s ongoing efforts to optimize its manufacturing footprint, vertically integrate its facilities and strengthen long-term operational efficiency,” the statement continued. “It reinforces our commitment to delivering high-quality products and exceptional service to customers worldwide, while continuing to adapt, grow and operate more efficiently in a dynamic and ever-changing industry.”
The closure is scheduled to take effect May 7, according to the filing.
The Mesquite facility has been part of the region’s manufacturing base for years. When Ashley Furniture first announced plans to build the operation in Texas, state leaders including Governor Greg Abbott highlighted the project as a sign of continued economic investment in the state.

Investigators trace probable cause
An investigation determined the probable cause was airborne floating lanterns released from an unknown location, possibly Balch Springs or southeast Dallas. One lantern likely became caught in a tree, dropping its burning fuel cell and igniting the fire.
"Floating lanterns are powered by a small fuel 'fount' or fuel cell, typically containing a flammable oil or similar ignitable material," Mesquite fire officials said in a news release.
"Investigators believe one of the lanterns became entangled in a tree as it descended, causing the fuel source to drop to the ground and ignite a fire that ultimately spread to both homes."
With Chinese New Year celebrations concluding, officials warn that floating lanterns and fireworks pose major fire risks.

MESQUITE, Texas — Two homes were destroyed in a fire Thursday night that investigators say was likely caused by floating lanterns released miles away.
Around 8 p.m. on March 5, the Mesquite Fire Department responded to reports of a residential structure fire near Peachtree Road and Bruton Road. When firefighters arrived, they found two homes engulfed in flames. Crews worked quickly to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further.
No injuries were reported, but both homes were destroyed. Elizabeth Ruiz, who lived in one of the homes, says everything happened in a matter of minutes.
"Two of the [lanterns] landed in this tree," said Ruiz.
After an investigation, fire officials determined the probable cause was airborne floating lanterns believed to have been released from the Balch Springs or southeast Dallas area.
Neighbors were the first to alert the family to the fire. The Ruiz family of six was able to escape their home just in time.
“When we came out, everything was already in flames,” she said. “In just 3 minutes....three minutes and everything is gone. You see your children crying, you break. I couldn't be strong for them. I couldn't stop this for them,” Elizabeth cried.
She says her neighbors later told her several lanterns were seen drifting into the neighborhood. According to videos shared with WFAA, it showed around eight small balls of light drifting in the sky.
“They said there were so many lanterns and it happened so fast they don't know exactly how it happened,” Elizabeth said.
The family now faces another challenge.
Ruiz says their home insurance lapsed three months ago. Her son had just bought a vehicle and was waiting for the tags. She says he hadn't driven it yet. Both families are staying in hotels while they figure out the next steps.
The Mesquite Fire Department is reminding residents that floating lanterns and fireworks can pose a serious fire risk.
