I’m on the Golden Bears and the points here. I get the case to be made for Miami at home, but I think Cal has been better than expected and I just don’t believe that Miami is this many points better than Cal. I will take my chances with the Golden Bears and the points here.

Florida is a winter escape, but for the next few days much of it will have below-freezing nights and the Tampa Bay area might even see snowflakes for the first time in over a decade.

The Midwest and South have been getting major winter storms for several days, and a giant cyclone forecast in the Atlantic Ocean is expected to pull that cold weather east as a powerful blizzard this weekend. The worst seems to be heading toward the Carolinas, but the Sunshine State is preparing for winter weather.

Ana Torres-Vazquez, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Miami, said that a cold front earlier this week has already caused temperatures to dip, but the region could experience record-setting, freezing temperatures this weekend.

South Florida residents are less likely to have heavy coats and other winter clothes, so Torres-Vazquez said it's important to layer up and limit time outside. Dr. David Nestler, with the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, said frostbite and hypothermia, two health dangers not always top-of-mind among Floridians, are real concerns when temperatures drop this far.

Meanwhile, visitors from cooler climates are finding it easier to acclimate to Florida’s version of cold weather. Doug Brubaker said it was minus 20 F (minus 29 C) with windchill when he left Cleveland, Ohio, on Wednesday.

“Whatever’s coming this weekend to me is not cold, but I know it’s cold for Florida,” Brubaker said.

Moving north, Tony Hurt, a National Weather Service forecaster for the Tampa Bay area, said there’s a small chance of snowfall and flurries in that region this weekend, but no accumulations.

The last two times the area got snow was flurries in January 2010 and December 1989. A record 2 inches (5 centimeters) of snow fell in January 1977 about 20 miles (32 kilometers) east of Tampa.

Despite the forecast, Tampa will host the annual Gasparilla Pirate Fest on Saturday. And Sunday, the Tampa Bay Lightning are set to host the Boston Bruins for an outdoor NHL game at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers NFL stadium.

Few tourists will be swimming or lounging on beaches this weekend, but many attractions will remain open. Most of Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando will operate normally, though their water parks will be closed. Most of the state's zoos and animal parks will also remain open while keepers take steps to protect the inhabitants.

Zoo Miami spokesman Ron Magill said keepers have been setting up heaters and moving reptiles and smaller mammals indoors, while primates like chimpanzees and orangutans are given blankets.

Florida's native wildlife has learned to survive cold snaps, though casualties still occur, Magill said. Manatees, for example, have spent decades congregating at the warm-water outflows of about a dozen power plants.

But invasive, nonnative animals like iguanas and other exotic reptiles will suffer the most. Iguanas in South Florida go dormant in the cold, and though they usually wake when temperatures warm, many die after more than a day of extreme cold.

“I think in South Florida you're going to see iguanas falling from trees, I mean a lot, once it gets under 40 degrees,” Gov. Ron DeSantis said Friday at a news conference in Vero Beach. “In some of these places, it's going to be in the 20s and 30s.”

Farmers are working to safeguard their crops during winter harvest and the start of spring planting, Florida Fruit & Vegetable Association spokeswoman Christina Morton said.

The biggest concern for Florida's citrus growers is temperatures below 28 F (minus 2.2 C) for more than four hours — that's when damage occurs. Trevor Murphy, who has groves in the interior of the state, said he planned to turn on his irrigation system when the thermometer hits just above freezing to create a protective layer of ice on the trees and also fog, which helps warm the groves.

“We are about as ready as we are going to be,” Murphy said Friday. “We will see Sunday or Monday what Mother Nature throws at us.”

Robert Moehling Jr., whose family has been growing tropical fruit for generations in south Miami-Dade County, said the excessive water from running the irrigation can actually do more damage to their crops.

“In our experience over 66 years farming the avocados and mangoes and jackfruit, you leave the water off, run the risk of killing some versus destroying all,” Moehling said.

An arctic blast from Canada is also spreading south, where thousands of people remain without power to heat their homes. A new storm is expected to churn along the East Coast, prompting people in mid-Atlantic states to prepare for possible blizzard conditions and the Carolinas and nearby states to brace for near-blizzard conditions.

Temperatures in hard-hit northern Mississippi will feel as cold as minus 5 F (minus 21 C) when winds are factored in, National Weather Service forecasters say. People in a large part of the southeastern U.S. were under a variety of alerts warning of extremely cold weather.

Wednesday morning is cool with temperatures near 50 degrees. Feel-like conditions inland are back into the mid-40s. There isn’t as much wind on Wednesday morning, but we still have a light breeze to kick off the day.

Wednesday afternoon features sunshine that fills in with some clouds as a stray shower is possible. Not everyone will see rain, but we can’t rule out a passing shower. Highs reach back into the mid-60s. We’re reaching for a high temps near 67 degrees.

Expect another crisp night.

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 70 degrees. Northeast wind around 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Temps fall back near 50 degrees. Refreshing and cool air settles in through the end of the week. High temps will try to reach for 70 degrees by Thursday. It’ll be very similar into Friday, too.

Friday: A 20% chance of showers, mostly cloudy, with a high near 71 degrees. Northeast wind 6 to 8 mph.

Friday, a few passing showers are possible as an area of low pressure begins to develop in the gulf. This is going to be attached to the cold front that will bring arctic air down into South Florida by the second half of the weekend.

Saturday: A 40% chance of showers, partly sunny, with a high near 68 degrees. Breezy, with a west wind 6 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph.

Saturday, the front moves through and showers are expected ahead of the major temperature drop. Temps on Saturday afternoon warm into the mid-60s. Then, behind the cold front showers, temps fall into the 30s!

It’s going to be very windy with gusts up to 30 mph. This is going to give us a windchill factor.

Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 55 degrees. Northwest wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph.

Feel-like conditions are already being highlighted to feel like the mid-20s by Sunday morning. The arctic air stays in place into the afternoon with highs only reaching into the mid-50s.

Sunday morning there could be a near record-low with a forecast of 36 degrees in Miami. This would tie the record-low for the date Feb. 1 in Miami previously set back in 1909.

Fort Lauderdale's current record low for the date is 33 degrees, which might be just a little too far to hit.

Monday: Sunny, with a high near 61 degrees.

It’ll be another cold morning on Monday before the arctic air starts to slowly retreat.

Now, Monday morning could also be in record territory for the date with a low forecast again of 36 degrees for both Miami and Fort Lauderdale. The current low record for Feb. 2 in Miami is 35 degrees set back in 1942. Fort Lauderdale's current record for the date is 38 degrees set back 1979.

Is this the coldest South Florida's ever been?

Temperatures in the 30s are extremely rare in South Florida.

Fort Lauderdale’s all-time record low is 28°F, set on January 20, 1977. Miami's all-time record low is 27°F set in January 1940.

Current projections for early February are approaching those levels, underscoring how unusual this cold spell could be.

Florida is preparing for a notably cold weekend, with temperatures dropping into the 30s in some parts of South Florida, into the 20s across Central Florida, and even lower in the northern part of the state.

Given this outlook, many residents are asking the same question: Is there any chance we could see snow?

Based on the current forecast and available meteorological indicators, the probability of snow in Florida remains extremely low, especially outside the far northern areas of the state.

The arrival of cold air, even of Arctic origin, will bring bitter mornings and conditions that some areas have not experienced in more than 15 years, with daytime highs feeling unusually cool or even cold by Florida standards.

Overnight lows near or below freezing will be possible from Central Florida into parts of the Panhandle and North Florida. However, cold surface temperatures alone are not enough to produce snowfall. For precipitation to fall as snow, the entire atmosphere, not just the ground level, must be cold enough.

One of the most well-known methods for estimating the boundary between rain and snow is the so-called 540 line, a general rule of thumb used in meteorology.

This line is based on the atmospheric thickness between two pressure levels: 1000 millibars near the surface and 500 millibars around 18,000 feet (approximately 5,500 meters) above the ground. When that thickness is 5,400 meters or less, the air is typically cold enough to support snow. If the value is higher, precipitation is more likely to fall as rain.

In simple terms, north of the 540 line the environment is more favorable for snow, while farther south, milder conditions usually mean rain.

In this case, analyses suggest the 540 line could dip as far south as the northern edge of Lake Okeechobee and remain in that area from Saturday night through early Monday morning.

However, the crucial factor, moisture or precipitation, is not expected to be present to allow snow to form. In other words, we may have the necessary cold, but we would be missing the main ingredient: water.

Even if cold air and water vapor were to combine, other factors still reduce the likelihood of seeing snow in Florida. A slightly warmer layer of air near the surface can melt snowflakes before they reach the ground, and significant snowfall also requires enough moisture and a well-organized storm system, something not expected to develop strongly this weekend, at least in our region.

Snow in Florida remains a historically rare phenomenon. While isolated episodes have been recorded in the northern part of the state during extreme Arctic outbreaks, these events are exceptional. For Central and Southern Florida, snow is virtually impossible under the current atmospheric pattern.

In conclusion, the weekend will bring a distinctly wintry feel, with intense cold and widespread frost expected across much of the Sunshine State. However, a widespread snowfall in Florida is not within the most likely meteorological scenario. Temperatures may drop, but snow requires a far more complex combination of atmospheric conditions.
