A federal grand jury Tuesday indicted a Wisconsin judge arrested by the FBI for allegedly obstructing government agents seeking to detain an undocumented immigrant.

The two-page indictment accuses Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Hannah Dugan of confronting members of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and falsely telling them they needed a judicial warrant to conduct their operation. It also accused her of directing the undocumented immigrant and his lawyer to exit through a separate door to sidestep federal agents.

Dugan was arrested last month and charged with obstructing or impeding a proceeding before a department or agency of the United States, and concealing an individual to prevent his discovery and arrest.

The maximum penalty for the counts is a total of 6 years in prison and up to $350,000 in fines. Dugan is scheduled to enter her plea to the charges Thursday morning.

Protests over FBI arrest of Wisconsin judge

Dugan’s attorney Craig Mastantuono said in a statement Tuesday that the judge maintains her innocence.

“As she said after her unnecessary arrest, Judge Dugan asserts her innocence and looks forward to being vindicated in court,” Mastantuono said.

Dugan's arrest in April marked an intensification in the Trump administration’s crackdown on immigration and its attacks on judges, sparking protests in Milwaukee.

On the day of her arrest, Attorney General Pam Bondi said on Fox News: “If you are harboring a fugitive, we don’t care who you are, if you are helping hide...anyone who is illegally in this country, we will come after you and we will prosecute you. We will find you."

Dugan was released on bond after appearing before a federal magistrate judge.

The Wisconsin Supreme Court temporarily relieved Dugan of her duties last month while the case moves forward, an action the court said it took on its own and to protect public trust in Wisconsin courts.

And for the cheapest beach vacation rentals, you'll want to go to Tampa, FL.

All of those destinations would be great, but they all require a flight or a long car trip.

Luckily, closer to home, we've got the most affordable lakefront town, and that title goes to Milwaukee, WI!

Travel+Leisure writes that there are nine beaches that line Lake Michigan just in Milwaukee.

Some of their beaches include Bradford Beach, McKinley Beach, which I hear has a beer garden, and Grant Beach.

For a 2-night stay for 2 adults, Beach.com estimates that, if you stay at a hotel, you'll spend about $1,818 on the whole vacation. If you'd rather be in something like an Airbnb, that'll cost you about $1,936.

By the way, both of those prices include their estimate for flights, so it'd be even cheaper for us Minnesotans!

A national safety group gave nine Wisconsin hospitals a "D" this spring. Most hospitals in the state earned a "C" or better.

WISCONSIN — A new hospital safety report released Thursday shows 17 hospitals in Wisconsin earned “A” grades based on their ability to protect their patients from often preventable harm.

The Leapfrog Group’s Spring 2025 Hospital Safety Grades are a biannual ranking that assigns a “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” to all general hospitals in the United States based on their ability to protect patients from medical errors, accidents, injuries and infections.

Out of 67 hospitals evaluated in Wisconsin, 17 earned an A, 13 earned a B, 31 earned a C, and nine received a D in the Spring 2025 safety grades. Most hospitals fall in the C range.

Across the nation, 11 hospitals have earned "A" grades on all 27 evaluation rounds over the 13 years of the report card.

They include: Mayo Clinic-Phoenix in Arizona; French Hospital Medical Center and Kaiser Permanente Orange County-Anaheim Medical Center in California; Endeavor Health Elmhurst Hospital, Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital and University of Chicago Medical Center in Illinois; Saint Anne’s Hospital (Massachusetts); Inova Loudoun Hospital, Sentara CarePlex Hospital and Sentara Leigh Hospital in Virginia; and Virginia Mason Medical Center in Washington.

Leah Binder, the president and chief executive of The Leapfrog Group, said “A” grades should be a source of pride for hospitals, but she warned them not to “rest on that laurel.”

“Patient safety is a relentless, never-ending quest to put patients first,” she said in a news release. “That’s why Leapfrog is highlighting the hospitals across the U.S. that have earned Straight A’s for over two years. Sustaining an A over multiple years reflects a deep-rooted commitment to patient safety.”

The top five states with the highest share of Straight A hospitals since spring 2023 are Utah (29 percent), Connecticut (29 percent), New Jersey (27 percent), Rhode Island (22 percent) and Virginia (20 percent).

States with no Straight A hospitals for consistent performance over the past five grading cycles are Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, Iowa, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, Wyoming and Washington, D.C.

The states with the highest percentage of A Grades for spring 2025 are Utah, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Connecticut, South Carolina and Virginia.

Tornadoes, severe weather tear through Upper Midwest

Radar-confirmed tornadoes tore through parts of Western Wisconsin on Thursday. Dozens of tornado warnings were issued throughout Minnesota and Wisconsin.

MAYVILLE, Wis. – Communities across the Upper Midwest were cleaning up storm damage Friday morning after severe storms spawned damaging wind gusts and even a few tornadoes Thursday evening.

Tornado Warnings wailed across Minneapolis and nearby communities on Thursday afternoon, and tornadoes were spotted spinning through Minnesota and Wisconsin, as dangerous storms charged through the region.

The cities of Juneau and Mayville, Wisconsin, around 60 miles northeast of Milwaukee, received some of the worst damage as tornado-warned storms moved through around 6 p.m. local time.

Significant damage was reported by first responders around Juneau and Mayville, Wisconsin, as a line of tornado-warned storms raced through on Thursday evening.

The Dodge County Sheriff's Office said multiple buildings were destroyed in both cities and one person was taken to the hospital for minor injuries.

Tornado spotted in southern Wisconsin

A tornado was spotted in Juneau, Wisconsin, on Thursday.

Photos from around Juneau showed significant damage to farms, with trees and debris that blocked roadways.

The Mayville Fire Department reported responding to numerous gas leaks as well as buildings that had structural damage.

Emergency crews reported responding to numerous calls for injuries, but few people required transport to medical centers.

At least two shelters were opened for residents whose homes were significantly damaged during the severe weather event.

Significant power outages remained in Dodge, Fond du Lac and Sheboygan counties, and officials said power outages could last for several days as many utility poles were snapped by the intense winds.

"Things can be replaced, but people can't," Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt said during an evening news briefing.

Tornadoes were also reported in New Richmond, Wisconsin, and Danvers, Minnesota, and appeared to be rope-like in appearance, according to storm spotters.

Most storm reports received by the Storm Prediction Center were from hail, which reached upwards of hen egg-sized in the Badger State.

Video taken in downtown Madison, Wisconsin, showed ice pelting balconies during the first round of storms.

Tornado sirens sound in Minneapolis, Chicago slammed by fierce wind

Severe weather also plagued the Minneapolis and Chicago metro areas as the line of storms swept through. A thunderstorm with rotation prompted a Tornado Warning for the Minneapolis metro on Thursday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

Following the warning, there were no confirmed tornado touchdowns in the metro, with sightings outside the Twin Cities.

Damaging winds, including a gust close to 80 mph in Chicago, tore through the Upper Midwest.

As a precautionary measure, a concert starring Beyoncé at Soldier Field in Chicago was pushed back from a 7 p.m. to a 9 p.m. start time in order to allow the worst of the weather to push through.

Shortly after 7 p.m. concertgoers received warnings from the local National Weather Service to seek shelter as severe storms with plenty of lightning and gusty winds moved through the Windy City.

Both Midway and O’Hare airports reported significant delays as a line of storms rumbled through the area.

The National Weather Service received widespread reports of trees snapped or toppled across much of the Chicago metro area.

Over 300,000 lose power as damaging wind gusts sweep Michigan, Indiana

The storms transformed into an intense squall line as they marched east into Michigan and Indiana on Thursday night, carrying a wall of wind that led to damage reports across much of the state.

Southwestern Michigan and northwestern Indiana took the brunt of the gusts, which reached over 60-70 mph and left over 300,000 electricity customers without power, according to findenergy.com. Multiple wind damage reports came to the NWS from the Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Battle Creek areas.

"(Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety) is conducting a storm damage assessment and responding to numerous calls of wires and trees down in multiple parts of the city," city officials wrote in a Facebook post.

Wind gusts knocked over a semi-truck along U.S. Highway 127 near Mason, according to the NWS.

Springfield, Michigan recorded a gust of 76 mph while Grand Haven reached 70 mph.

Friday's severe weather threat increases

The severe weather threat is continuing to increase as we head into Friday, with more than 6 million people in cities like Bloomington, Indiana, St. Louis, and Louisville, Kentucky, and Clarksville, Tennessee, in a Level 4 out of 5 threat.

RENEWED SEVERE WEATHER OUTBREAK THREATENS OVER 140 MILLION FRIDAY

A lesser Level 3 out of 5 threat is in place for major cities, including Indianapolis, Nashville, Cincinnati and Knoxville.

Storms, however, could erupt across a wide swath of the U.S. from Texas to the Northeast.

Severe storms could move through the Milwaukee area during the afternoon and evening on May 15, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters say storms could struggle to develop, particularly south of I-94, but if they do appear, severe weather is possible throughout the Milwaukee area. Lines of storms are predicted to develop in west and central Wisconsin around 3 p.m. and move southward across the state, arriving in southeastern Wisconsin between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., said Tim Halbach, Warning Coordination Meteoroglist with the NWS.

"It is going to be a pretty quick moving band of thunderstorms," said Halbach.

The peak time frame for severe storms, including very large hail, tornadoes and strong winds is between 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Milwaukee has a lower risk of tornadoes due to cooler temperatures near the lakefront, Halbach said.

Strongest winds are estimated to be between 60 mph to 80 mph across most of the state. Flooding is unlikely as rainfall totals are predicted to be a quarter to a half inch, said Halbach.

Storms will be stronger if they can overcome the dry air in the mid-levels of the atmosphere, which is most likely north and west of Madison, according to the National Weather Service.

After 8 p.m. storms are predicted to move east of the Milwaukee area, said Halbach.
