An earthquake of magnitude 2.7 occurred around noon on Tuesday, January 13th, 2026, at 1:33 pm local time near Moreno Valley, Riverside County, California, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 8.5 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 2.7 as well. In Colton (pop. 54,600, 9 miles away), Riverside (pop. 317,300, 10 miles away), San Bernardino (pop. 216,100, 11 miles away), Highland (pop. 54,900, 11 miles away), Perris (pop. 75,000, 13 miles away), Rialto (pop. 103,100, 13 miles away), and Fontana (pop. 212,700, 15 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA - A 2.7 magnitude quake was detected near Moreno Valley around midday Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The tremor, which rattled the area at 1:33 p.m., was centered roughly 3 miles north of Moreno Valley. It occurred at a depth of 9 miles. Seismologists first reported it as a 2.9 event, but later downgraded it to 2.7.

Quakes last week

Over the past week, there have been two earthquakes, greater than magnitude 2.5, centered in the region. The larger one was a 2.6 quake that was recorded close to Muscoy six days ago. The other, of magnitude 2.5, occurred close to Valle Vista on January 10.

Quakes between 2.5 and 5.4 magnitude are often felt but rarely cause much damage, according to Michigan Tech. Earthquakes below 2.5 magnitude are seldom felt by most people.

Earthquakes' sudden, rapid shaking can cause fires, tsunamis, landslides or avalanches. They can happen anywhere, but are most common in Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon, Puerto Rico and Washington, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

It is estimated that there are 500,000 detectable earthquakes in the world each year. 100,000 of those can be felt, and 100 of them cause damage.

What to do during an earthquake

If an earthquake strikes, it's best to protect yourself right away. Here are tips from experts:

If you're in a car: Pull over and stop. Set your parking brake.

If you're in bed: Turn face-down and cover your head with a pillow.

If you're outdoors: Stay away from buildings. Don't go inside.

If you're inside: Stay and don't run outdoors. Stay away from doorways.

The best way to protect yourself during an earthquake is to drop, cover and hold on, officials say. "Wherever you are, drop down to your hands and knees and hold onto something sturdy," officials say. "If you're using a wheelchair or walker with a seat, make sure your wheels are locked and remain seated until the shaking stops." Be sure to cover your head and neck with your arms, and crawl under a sturdy table if possible. If no shelter is available, crawl to an interior wall away from windows. Once under a table, officials say you should hold on with one hand and be ready to move with it.

"There can be serious hazards after an earthquake, such as damage to the building, leaking gas and water lines, or downed power lines," officials say. "Expect aftershocks to follow the main shock of an earthquake. Be ready to Drop, Cover, and Hold On if you feel an aftershock."

Moreno Valley, CA (Dec. 7, 2025) — Two people sustained injuries in a crash on Hemlock Avenue on Thursday morning.

Reportedly, a sedan crashed into the side of a CVS Pharmacy in Moreno Valley, causing minor structural damage, officials said.

According to the Riverside County Fire Department, the crash was reported at approximately 11:25 a.m. at the intersection of Hemlock Avenue and Perris Boulevard.

Emergency crews arrived to find that a BMW had slammed into the south exterior wall of the pharmacy.

The driver and passenger inside the sedan sustained minor injuries, and paramedics provided on-site treatment.

An ambulance was requested for one of the occupants, though it remains unclear whether that person chose to be transported to Riverside University Medical Center or opted for alternative medical care.

Fortunately, no one inside the business was injured during the crash.

Fire officials noted that while the damage to the building appeared to be minor, Moreno Valley’s Department of Building & Safety was called in to assess the structural integrity of the affected wall.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by sheriff’s deputies, who were also dispatched to the scene to gather information and determine whether any citations or further actions would be necessary.
