CAMP PENDLETON, CA —The Marine Expeditionary Force will host a live-fire Amphibious Capabilities Demonstration at Camp Pendleton's Red Beach on Saturday to mark the Marine Corps' 250th birthday and America's Semiquincentennial, an event that will be attended by Vice President JD Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

The capabilities demonstration will feature integrated Navy and Marine Corps operations across air, land and sea, according to base officials.

"The force training activities planned ensure our readiness to defend the Homeland and protect our nation's interests abroad against emergent and unprecedented challenges today and in the years ahead," a spokesperson with Camp Pendleton said in a statement. "All training events will occur on approved training ranges and comport with established safety protocols."

In advance of the training event and demonstration, a detailed risk assessment was conducted at the base, officials said. All participants will be briefed, while medical, fire and emergency responders and equipment will be on site.

Plans for the live-fire demonstration prompted criticism Wednesday from Gov. Gavin Newsom, who called the event "an absurd show of force, and totally uncalled for during a government shutdown when members of the military cannot even get a paycheck."

Newsom floated the possibility of shutting down Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton due to safety concerns about ordnance being fired over the roadway, but the roadway is now expected to remain open following a risk assessment. Newsom, however, continued his criticism of the event.

"Donald Trump and JD Vance can find money to launch missiles over the I-5 during a government shutdown, but not a dime for Americans' health care," Newsom wrote on Twitter.Rep. Mike Levin, who represents Camp Pendleton and surrounding environs, also expressed concerns.

"The 250th birthday of the United States Marine Corps is a moment to be proud -- to honor two and a half centuries of valor and excellence. It deserves to be celebrated in a way worthy of their legacy and consistent with their values: honor, courage and commitment," he said. "That's why I am concerned by reports that portions of Interstate 5 could be closed for several hours in both directions on Friday and Saturday to accommodate events tied to anything partisan or political.

"Even on a normal weekend, traffic along the I-5 corridor is heavy. Long closures would cause significant congestion and real hardship for residents, businesses and first responders. I hope any such closures can be minimized."

Marine officials said all air, surface and ground movements are scripted and rehearsed in accordance with standard operating procedures and established safety checklists.

Following the demonstration, Marines, sailors and families will gather at Del Mar Beach for the Beach Bash, a celebration that "recognizes the people who form the foundation of the Marine Corps' strength -- our families and the community -- as we share in the celebration of 250 years of service."

The event will include food vendors, music, static displays and family activities.

The White House Production Office will be capturing the demonstration for broadcast on Nov. 9.

USA Basketball announced today that Frontwave Arena in Oceanside, California, home to the NBA G League San Diego Clippers, will host a pair of USA FIBA Men’s World Cup Qualifying games against Dominican Republic and Mexico on Feb. 26 and March 1, 2026, respectively. The games in Oceanside will be part of a two-game window with USA Basketball that sees the U.S. host Dominican Republic at 7 p.m. PT and Mexico at 4 p.m. PT. The USA Men, who are in Group A, will first host a training camp in Oceanside. USA Basketball begins 2027 FIBA World Cup Qualifying later this month with a pair of games vs. Nicaragua in Managua on Nov. 29 and in College Park, Georgia, on Dec. 1.

As previously announced, from November 2025 to March 2027, six World Cup Qualifying windows will feature 420 total games, as 80 national teams compete for one of 32 berths to the 2027 FIBA Men’s World Cup in Doha, Qatar.

Following Windows 1 and 2, Window 3 sees the USA play a pair of road contests in Dominican Republic on July 3 and Mexico on July 6, 2026. Nations will be regrouped for Windows 4-6.

Players selected to represent the USA in the FIBA World Cup Qualifying games are expected to primarily be from the NBA G League. More information about the USA roster, coaching staff and training camp will be announced at a later date.

Under the current format, which dates back to the 2019 FIBA Men’s World Cup, USA Basketball has compiled a 19-5 record and has finished atop their respective group in both 2019 and 2023.

A lapse in CalFresh payments will mean thousands of residents may turn to San Diego County food banks.

OCEANSIDE, CA — Across San Diego County, food banks are bracing for a potentially massive influx of local CalFresh benefits in need next week as their benefits don't arrive in November due to the ongoing government shutdown.

This week, Attorney General Rob Bonta said it will be the "first time ever" that SNAP benefits are halted for millions who rely on them.

Following the shutdown on Oct. 10, USDA sent a letter to state agencies directing them to put an indefinite hold on November benefits.

“Bottom line, the well has run dry,” the USDA notice says.

Beginning Nov. 1, the agency said there will be no benefits sent to the 1 in 8 Americans, roughly 42 million, that SNAP serves. In California, the aid known as CalFresh serves more than 5.5 million.Across the Inland Empire, CalFresh serves 2.3 million people.

Julia Rensink, a spokesperson for God's Pantry, a food bank nonprofit that runs food giveaways across the Inland Empire, told The Press-Enterprise that the federal benefits are at times all that families have.

“We’re not new to crises. Our mission has always been to bridge the gap,” Rensink told the newspaper. “We’ve seen firsthand how programs like CalFresh make a difference; not just for those who receive the food kits, but those who work in the warehouse. When benefits get interrupted, our food distributions become these families’ safety net.”

Gov. Gavin Newsom has also deployed the state National Guard to support food banks.

"As SNAP delays hit dinner tables right before the holiday season, the state is working hard to keep families from going hungry," Newsom said. "The efforts seen today will be ongoing and available to food banks across California that request greater assistance.”

CAMP PENDLETON, CA — A stretch of the freeway shut down Saturday in San Diego County due to a military event celebrating the U.S. Marine Corps' 250th birthday.

The California Highway Patrol on Saturday announced the "unscheduled closure" of a section of Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton due to public safety concerns linked to a controversial live-fire military demonstration at the base that prompted concerns from state officials over public safety. The closure comes a day after military officials assured community leaders that a closure wouldn't be necessary.

Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a statement Saturday blasting the federal government's decision to move forward with the event and confirming the temporary freeway closure.

"The President is putting his ego over responsibility with this disregard for public safety," Newsom said. "Firing live rounds over a busy highway isn't just wrong — it's dangerous. Using our military to intimidate people you disagree with isn't strength — it's reckless, it's disrespectful, and it's beneath the office he holds. Law and order? This is chaos and confusion."

The closure was scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday from Harbor Drive to Basilone Road, according to the CHP.

"Because of the event and closure, drivers should expect delays on Interstate 5 and other state routes throughout Southern California before, during and after the event," the CHP said in a statement.

According to the governor's office, the state received notice late Friday from event organizers asking for Caltrans signage to be posted along the I-5 warning drivers of "overhead fire in progress." State officials observed a practice round Friday near the freeway.

Early Saturday morning, the federal government confirmed that live fire activity was scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, according to the governor's office.

The decision to close a section of the freeway was recommended by traffic safety experts at the CHP, who cited "extreme life safety risk and distraction to drivers, including sudden unexpected and loud explosions," according to the governor's office.

The freeway closure comes days after the U.S. Marines said no public highways or transportation routes would be closed for the event, called "America's Marines 250: From Sea to Shore – A Review of Amphibious Strength."

Top officials from the Trump administration, including Vice President JD Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, are scheduled to join more than 15,000 Marines, sailors, veterans and their families for the occasion.

The planned live-fire demonstration sparked concerns earlier this week that a stretch of I-5 would need to be shut down for the public's safety.

"Donald Trump and JD Vance think that shutting down the I-5 to shoot out missiles from ships is how you respect the military," Gov. Gavin Newsom posted on X. "Put aside your vanity parade and pay our troops instead."

Rep. Mike Levin, who represents Camp Pendleton and surrounding communities, also expressed concerns.

"As the proud representative for Camp Pendleton, I'll always honor our Marines — the best fighting force in the world," he posted on X. "But reports of multi-hour I-5 closures on Friday and Saturday raise serious concerns. We should celebrate the Marine Corps' 250th birthday with full transparency and without disrupting the community."

In a news released issued Wednesday by the Marines, officials said all training events would take place on approved training ranges and comply with established safety protocols. At that time, military officials said no public highways or transportation routes would be closed.

Caltrans and the CHP on Saturday urged motorists planning to travel near the closure to visit quickmap.dot.ca.gov for real-time traffic information.

According to Caltrans, passenger rail service on the adjacent rail line will also temporarily be disrupted Saturday afternoon.

In San Diego County, the detour to head north will begin at Interstate 15 in southeast San Diego, according to Caltrans. Travelers west of I-15 along the I-5 corridor in San Diego are advised to use SR-94, SR-52, SR-56, or SR-78 to I-15 north.

Travelers from San Diego heading to Los Angeles County are advised to use I-15 north to state Route 91 west into Los Angeles, according to Caltrans. Travelers starting in Los Angeles heading south to San Diego should use SR-91 east to I-15 south.

To get to Orange County from San Diego, travelers are advised to take I-15 north to SR-91 west then SR-55 south. Travelers from Orange County heading south to San Diego, should use SR-55 north to SR-91 east to I-15 south.

Travelers to and from Riverside County are advised to take I-15 and SR-91.
