POMPANO BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) - One man has been taken to the hospital following a crash involving a Brightline train and a car in Pompano Beach.

Pompano Beach Fire Rescue and Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the collision near the intersection of West Atlantic Boulevard and North Dixie Highway just after 4 p.m., Tuesday.

When crews arrived, they found the car overturned on the tracks with the driver trapped inside.

Firefighters were able to extricate the driver, who was conscious and alert at the scene, and transported him to Broward Health North for treatment.

He suffered serious injuries, according to BSO.

Video, provided by City of Pompano Beach, shows first responders working to extract the driver out of the car moments after the crash.

Officials said the impact of the crash was so forceful that parts of the vehicle, including the engine block and a tire, were ejected and struck the nearby City Commission Chambers building, which was over 100 feet away, shattering a window.

No other injuries were reported and the Brightline train did not suffer any damage from the crash.

Passengers on the train heard an announcement over the speakers shortly after the collision.

“Once again, they’re assessing the train and the tracks to make sure we are able to proceed,” said the operator.

But soon enough, the train would eventually start rolling again.

Witnesses said these type of crashes continue occurring.

“I see this happen all the time. People come, they stop at the train, the train goes by, they get impatient, they don’t wait for the arms to go up. They try and cut around and unbeknownst to them, a train comes from the other direction and that’s when they get hit. I’ve seen that a couple times already,” said Lori Segal.

Repair work has begun on the City Commission Chambers building.

The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation.

Has Pompano Beach, Fla., a historically working- and middle-class town that is now seeing a rush of luxury development along its waterfront, ascended to a top-tier market? The owners of the oceanfront Beachcomber Resort and Villas sure hope so.

The 5.1-acre property has hit the market with an asking price starting at $175 million, according to Cushman & Wakefield, which is marketing the site.

Located at 1200 South Ocean Boulevard, the property includes 3.4 acres along the beach and an additional 1.7 acres across the street, facing the Intracoastal Waterway. The asking price equates to about $35 million per acre.

An entity managed by Ronald and Maureen Russell has owned the 147-room hotel for almost 60 years since 1966. The seller is willing to provide the buyer time to arrange site plan approval before closing on the acquisition, per C&W, whose team representing the sellers includes Robert Kaplan, Errol Blumer and Mark Rutherford.

“Beachcomber is the largest oceanfront development site currently being marketed for sale in South Florida,” Kaplan said in a statement. “With 300 feet of beach frontage and a central location providing easy access to all of South Florida’s world-class amenities, the property has all of the attributes to make it highly desirable for a new, ultra-luxury condominium or hospitality development project.”

Other notable Pompano Beach deals in the past few years include Related Group and BH Group’s $47.5 million purchase in 2023 of a 3.7-acre plot at 20 North Ocean Boulevard, which is now slated to become a 24-story, W-branded condo and hotel development. That same year, Fortune International Group and Oak Capital obtained a $259 million construction loan from Bank OZK for their Ritz-Carlton-branded condo development.

After nearly four decades in operation, the Festival Marketplace, also known as the Festival Flea Market, will close its doors for good at the end of the month.

The once-bustling Pompano Beach landmark, located just off the Florida Turnpike and Sample Road, was sold earlier this year to an Orlando-based developer planning to convert the site into warehouses.

In its prime, the sprawling indoor market housed more than 250 stores. Now, as its final days approach, long-time vendors say the closure marks the end of an era.

"We're a big family"

"Everybody is very sad because next week is the end of this era," said Arlene Tanner, who works at Vivian's Place inside the Festival Marketplace. Tanner first came to the market as a customer and decided to work there after retiring 11 years ago.

"We're a big family. We are. Everybody in this place became a huge family. Everybody knows everybody," she said.

Booths that once buzzed with activity now sit empty, reminders of what the market used to be.

Vendors uncertain about the future

Nina Ramalao, owner of Nina's Place, has spent the last 26 years serving loyal customers at her booth.

"I'm very lucky to have such nice customers, which allowed my business to be open until now," Ramalao said.

She said her regulars are just as shocked as she is. "I say, well right now I'm looking for places too. But I will open somewhere," she added.

Redevelopment plans underway

The new owner, an Orlando-based development firm, confirmed in a statement that it is working through the standard site plan review process with the City of Pompano Beach.

"The City has been great to work with to date, and we have gone through multiple rounds of review with staff so far. We continue to address comments and will continue through the process over the next few months," the statement read.

While the redevelopment may bring new employment opportunities to the area, those currently working at the Festival Marketplace will be out of work as of next week.

"Unemployment is going to be flooded next week. Devastation for a lot of people. It's going to be hard for all these people," Tanner said.

The final day for shoppers to visit the Festival Marketplace is May 31. It is not yet clear when construction on the new warehouses will begin.
