Snow is expected to move into Colorado’s Continental Divide on New Year’s Day, potentially creating slick and hazardous travel conditions across high-elevation routes, according to the National Weather Service in Pueblo.

NWS forecasts show snow developing Thursday morning and continuing through Friday afternoon, primarily affecting the Central Mountains and the San Juan Range. Snow accumulations of 1 to 4 inches are expected, with locally higher totals of up to 5 inches possible in favored mountain locations.

According to the National Weather Service, while no winter weather highlights are in effect yet, conditions may change as the system develops. Even modest snowfall could lead to slick and snow-covered roads, especially on mountain passes.

Road impacts are most likely along U.S. Highway 50 over Monarch Pass, U.S. Highway 160 over Wolf Creek Pass, Highway 114, and portions of Highway 149, where snow showers may reduce traction and visibility at times. Drivers traveling between Salida, Gunnison, Pagosa Springs, and Durango should be prepared for winter driving conditions beginning Thursday morning.

Snowfall is expected to be intermittent, with periods of lighter snow mixed with moderate bursts, particularly Thursday night. Valley locations and lower elevations east of the mountains, including Pueblo, La Junta, and Lamar, are expected to remain dry with no accumulation.

The National Weather Service advises travelers to monitor road conditions closely and check COtrip.org before heading into the mountains. Winter driving kits, reduced speeds, and additional travel time are recommended for those crossing high passes.

While New Year’s Eve tonight remains dry and quiet across southern Colorado, weather conditions will change quickly in the mountains on New Year’s Day, making early planning essential for holiday travel.

For skiers, workers, and New Year’s Day travelers, the primary concern will be mountain pass travel, as snowfall and slick roads may develop with little notice.

Above-normal temperatures and dry conditions will dominate much of southern Colorado through New Year’s Eve, while snow showers develop later tonight along and west of the Continental Divide, according to the National Weather Service in Pueblo.

NWS forecasts indicate well above seasonal temperatures across the plains and southern valleys for the final day of 2025. New Year’s Eve afternoon highs are expected to reach the upper 40s to upper 50s, including around 53 degrees in Pueblo, 48 in Salida, 47 in Trinidad, and 44 in Colorado Springs. Southeast Colorado locations such as La Junta and Lamar are forecast to climb into the mid to upper 50s.

Overnight, increasing cloud cover will help keep temperatures relatively mild. Midnight temperatures are expected to remain in the upper 20s to mid-30s, with Pueblo near 29 degrees, Colorado Springs around 32, and Alamosa near 15 in the San Luis Valley.

According to the National Weather Service, snow showers are expected to develop later tonight along and west of the Continental Divide, potentially impacting mountain travel into early New Year’s Day. Accumulations are expected to be light, but slick and snow-covered roads are possible in higher elevations.

Road impacts are most likely along U.S. Highway 50 west of Salida, U.S. 160 over Wolf Creek Pass, and Highway 114, where snow showers could reduce traction overnight. Across the plains, including Interstate 25 and U.S. Highway 50 east of Pueblo, roads are expected to remain dry.

By New Year’s Day (Thursday), temperatures will remain seasonable to mild east of the mountains, with continued dry conditions across the plains and lingering snow showers confined to higher terrain.

For travelers, service workers, and those celebrating outdoors, the primary weather concern will be mountain travel late tonight, while lower elevations enjoy a quiet and mild transition into 2026.

PUEBLO, Colo. (KOAA) — The Pueblo Fire Department is working to put out a fire at an abandoned building in Pueblo next to the intersection of Bradford Street and East 4th Street.

PFD says the call came in around 7:00 a.m. and flames were visible from I-25. PFD tells our newsroom that there are no injuries to report, and firefighters did not find anyone in the building as a result of the initial search.

The building has burned before, and because of the questionable structural integrity, firefighters have taken a defense approach to battling the blaze, according to Public Information Officer for the department Tim Trujillo.

In April of 2025, we reported about a fire in the same building along 4th Street; the department at the time said that the fire was likely human-caused.

A cause for the fire has not been shared as of this article's publishing. News5 has a crew in the area and will share more information as it is shared. Watch the viewer video from when the blaze was roaring earlier this morning.

Several Colorado state laws will go into effect on January 1, including House Bill 1090, which will give more transparency to customers about unexpected costs by eliminating junk fees.

Pueblo, Colorado – Snow is expected to return to the mountains of southern Colorado tonight and continue through the weekend, with 6 to 12 inches of new snow forecast for the eastern San Juan Mountains and wind gusts reaching 40 to 50 mph, creating hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, the greatest snowfall totals are expected across the eastern San Juan Mountains, where periods of steady snow combined with strong west to southwest winds will significantly reduce visibility and create drifting snow. Locally higher snowfall amounts are possible in favored terrain.

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for the eastern San Juan Mountains, effective from 10 p.m. Friday through 11 a.m. Sunday. Forecasters say the combination of accumulating snow and gusty winds may lead to difficult to dangerous travel, especially along mountain passes and exposed roadways.

Snowfall is expected to be ongoing through much of the weekend in the high country, while lower elevations, including the I-25 corridor and eastern plains, are expected to see limited impacts until Sunday morning, when lighter snow may develop.

Wind will be a major factor with this system, as gusts of 40 to 50 mph may cause areas of blowing and drifting snow, further reducing visibility. Travelers should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions, especially in higher elevations.

The National Weather Service advises motorists heading into the mountains to check road conditions before traveling, allow extra time, and be prepared for winter driving conditions. Updated road conditions are available through the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Snow is expected to gradually diminish later Sunday as the system moves east. Residents and travelers are urged to continue monitoring forecasts as conditions evolve through the weekend.

Hot springs may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Pueblo, Colorado, but there are three relaxing hot spring facilities located within an hour of town. Listed based on mileage from downtown, what follows is a list of the best places to soak in this area of Colorado.

Dakota Hot Springs (32 miles)

Situated between Pueblo and Cañon City, Dakota Hot Springs is a clothing-optional resort founded on the site of a former oil well. It’s open every day except Mondays and is usually clothing-optional except on Tuesdays when swimsuits are mandatory. This is the perfect spot for visitors looking to unwind and relax in a no-frills environment.

The highlight of the property is a large, 70-foot diameter pool with a depth varying between three and five feet. Water flows out of the spring at 108° F, but it is cooled to approximately 95-98° F by the time it reaches the main pool. Thanks to a constant flow from the spring, fresh water is always entering the pool, making it clean and relaxing.

For those hoping for a warmer place to soak, try out the smaller circular tub nearby.

For overnight stays, visitors can camp in a primitive campground on-site. Tent and RV sites without hookups are available. Bathrooms and showers are available nearby. No food is available on the property, but visitors are welcome to bring food to enjoy on the sundeck. Alcohol is permitted, but no glass bottles can be brought into the pool area.

Desert Reef Hot Spring (34 miles)

Operating since 1986, Desert Reef Hot Spring is another clothing-optional hot spring facility located in Colorado’s “banana belt”. They are clothing optional, except on Fridays, when swimsuits are required until 7 pm. On Tuesdays, they are closed.

Reservations are required to visit because the pool area sometimes reaches capacity. Couples and individual women are welcome, but individual men must be accompanied by a partner or other female during clothing-optional hours.

All of the compound’s pools are filled with mineral water that has surfaced from over 1,000 feet underground. During the summer months, water temperature is cooled to approximately body temperature. During winter, the water is kept over 100° F.

The main pool is 36’ by 50’. Additionally, there are four more pools to choose from, most of which are flow-through, meaning the water is continually being replaced To ensure cleanliness, all of the pools are drained and cleaned weekly.

The facility’s overnight accommodations are in the form of converted Airstream campers and tiny houses.

SunWater Spa (51 miles)

Located to the north in Manitou Springs, SunWater Spa is a relaxing hot spring resort and spa that features stunning views and impressive amenities. Like Desert Reef, reservations are not required, but they are strongly recommended. At SunWater Spa, visitors can choose the exact pool they will soak in when making reservations.

Reservations provide 90 minutes of soaking in one of the resort’s pools, all of which hold 4 people. Additionally, reservations include access to the saunas and saline pools. Temperatures in the pools hover between 99 and 104° F, and all of them face west or southwest for the best possible views.

A full-service spa offering massages, body treatments, and skincare is also available. Classic massages like deep tissue as well as specialized treatments including aromatherapy and hot stones, can be booked. Reservations are required for all spa treatments, and visitors should keep in mind that a 20% gratuity is required on all visits to the spa.

Limited food and drinks are available on-site in the retail area of the resort, and there is also a food truck on the property that has even more options.
