The auction followed the company’s bankruptcy filing on July 1, which triggered the sale of properties across the country and led to several facility closures.

Del Monte Foods is a Walnut Creek-based company best known for its packaged fruits and vegetables, along with other pantry staples.
Founded more than 135 years ago, the company operates a portfolio of well-known brands, including Contadina, Kitchen Basics and Joyba, according to its website.
“We believe that everyone deserves great tasting food they can feel good about, which is why we grow and produce our products using sustainable and earth-friendly practices for a healthier tomorrow,” Del Monte said.
Who is acquiring Del Monte Foods’ assets?
Del Monte Foods has reached agreements to sell “substantially all of” its assets and business operations to three different buyers, according to the company website.
Each company will take over a specific part of Del Monte Foods’ business, allowing the brands to continue operating under new ownership.
Fresh Del Monte Produce will acquire the company’s vegetable, tomato and refrigerated fruit businesses, according to the Thursday news release.
The deal includes well-known brands such as Del Monte and S&W packaged vegetables; Contadina and Take Root Organics tomato products; Del Monte refrigerated fruit; and the Joyba beverage brand.
“The transaction brings the Del Monte brand under a single owner for the first time in nearly four decades, aligning fresh and shelf-stable foods under one integrated strategy,” Fresh Del Monte’s CEO Mohammad Abu-Ghazaleh said in the news release.
Fresh Del Monte will also “gain global ownership of the Del Monte brand.”
According to PR Newswire, B&G Foods Inc. will purchase Del Monte Foods’ broth and stock business, which includes the College Inn and Kitchen Basics brands.
Pacific Coast Producers will acquire Del Monte Foods’ shelf-stable fruit business, excluding production facilities.
This sale includes the rights to use the Del Monte and S&W brands for canned fruit and fruit sauces sold in the United States, Puerto Rico and Mexico, PR Newswire reported.
The sales still need approval from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey, Del Monte Foods said, a hearing is scheduled for Jan. 28.
If approved, Del Monte Foods expects the ownership transitions to be completed “by the end of the first quarter of 2026.”
Del Monte announces California plant closure
After Del Monte Foods filed for bankruptcy on July 1, the company put its properties up for auction across the country.
The company only operates one plant in California.
No buyers stepped forward to keep the Modesto fruit cannery operating, The Modesto Bee reported.
Del Monte Foods plans to shut down its Modesto cannery — which will cost about 600 year-round jobs and another 1,200 seasonal jobs during harvest season.
“It’s just horrible for us,” business coordinator Odus Hall told The Bee. “... We were hopeful that they would be able to right the ship and find a buyer.”

You may have noticed that even after the morning fog lifts, a layer of haze continues to hang over the Valley.
Air Quality Index readings were in the "moderate" to "unhealthy" range in the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valley on Thursday morning. This is the result of a persistent area of high pressure overhead, which creates conditions that trap stagnant, dirty air in the lower elevations.
"In the winter, we often get this... where the air kind of just sits, and so we have some fog in the morning," explained Rebecca Schmidt from UC Davis Public Health Sciences. "There's not much wind to clear it out, and so we get a lot of like particulate matter and air pollutants just kind of hanging in the air down low where we're all breathing it in."
Light winds combined with Northern California's geography allow pollution to build up in the Valley. This can include harmful gases, emissions, smoke, and other airborne particles.
The longer winds stay calm, the more pollution particles can gather in the Valley.
The Sacramento Air Quality Management District has put Thursday and Friday into the "Stage 1 - No Burn Unless Exempt" category.
That means in Sacramento County, it is illegal to operate a wood-burning device or light a fire unless you use an EPA-certified fireplace insert, stove or pellet stove, and it does not emit visible smoke.
"By restricting burning, we're able to stop the creation of more pollution, and hopefully, when weather conditions change a few days after that, then we're able to allow burning again," said Emily Allshouse from the Sacramento Air Quality District.
The annual Check Before You Burn season runs from Nov. 1 through the end of February.
The county offers exemptions for certain households that rely on fireplaces as a primary source of heat, but these exemptions require annual application and approval before burning is allowed.
As the high-pressure system remains parked over the West Coast, reduced air quality is expected to linger through the weekend.

All of the reports are based on the Air Quality Index, also developed by the EPA.
An AQI of 50 or lower represents "Good" quality air that is relatively free of pollutants. Once the AQI reaches 101, air pollution is at a level that is unhealthy for sensitive groups, including the very old, the very young and anyone with a respiratory or immune condition.
An AQI above 300 is hazardous in the short and long term for everyone.

Sacramento County health inspectors closed a local Asian restaurant, indoor soccer business and a market after discovering live German cockroaches, operating without a valid health permit and other food safety violations.
Meanwhile, a total of 12 eateries received yellow placards for health code violations ranging from rodent droppings, dead German cockroaches and “potentially hazardous food” at unsafe temperatures.
What do these inspections mean?
While a yellow placard signals two or more major violations, these are typically corrected or mitigated during the inspection, according to the Sacramento County Retail Food Inspection Guide.
A red placard, however, signals “imminent danger to public health and safety” and suspends the health permit until violations are corrected.
This could include, but is not limited to, major vermin contamination. In contrast, a green placard means a restaurant passed inspection.
The county performs about 14,000 inspections annually and about 97% of establishments pass, spokesman Ken Casparis previously told The Sacramento Bee.
Approximately 1% of inspections result in a closure, he said.

The popular membership-only warehouse will open in west Roseville, according to Costco and the Sacramento Business Journal.
The new location will be Costco’s second Roseville location and 12th Sacramento area store.

What is Costco?
Costco is an international membership-only, big-box warehouse retailer. The business’s first location was opened in 1976 in San Diego and now has hundreds of locations worldwide, according to the Costco website.
The company offers a wide selection of merchandise from bulk produce, meat, pantry staples, electronics and household essentials, per Costco.
“Our operating philosophy has been simple. Keep costs down and pass the savings on to our members,” according to the Costco official site. “Our large membership base and tremendous buying power, combined with our never-ending quest for efficiency, result in the best possible prices for our members.”
Where is the new Sacramento-area location?
The new Costco location will be located at 5200 Baseline Road in Roseville.
The retail store will be located at the Baseline Marketplace, a 77.15 acre regional shopping center that is situated at the northwest quadrant of Baseline Road and Fiddyment Road, according to Gallelli Real Estate.
Costco will reside within 160,529 square feet of the property and will include a gas station, car wash and tire service center according to Gallelli Real Estate and the Costco website.
Costco owners purchased the property during the summer of 2024 for $6.88 million, according to the Sacramento Business Journal.
When will it open?
The Costco is projected to open on Friday, Jan. 23, according to the Costco website. This location will be the second Costco in the Roseville area.
Where are other Costco locations in the Sacramento area?
There are currently 11 Costco locations in the Sacramento area including a Costco Business Center.
