Spring has arrived with a mix of weather in San Diego this weekend, as light showers and breezy winds take hold through Sunday. Travelers and residents should expect cloudy skies and possible rain showers through the weekend, with gusty winds reaching up to 25 mph, making outdoor activities less ideal. The first part of the week will bring clearer skies, but it won’t be smooth sailing for all.

According to the National Weather Service, Saturday will see a 20% chance of showers after 11 a.m., with temperatures peaking near 63°F. Expect southwest winds at 10 to 15 mph, with gusts up to 25 mph. Saturday night will remain mostly cloudy, and temperatures will dip to around 53°F. If you’re planning on heading out, make sure to prepare for unpredictable weather, especially with the slight chance of rain throughout the day.

Sunday will start off with another chance of rain before 11 a.m., followed by sunnier skies in the afternoon. With a high near 63°F and gusty winds continuing, it’s the perfect day for a jacket or windbreaker. The light showers are expected to taper off, but the winds will still be a factor for those with outdoor plans.

By Monday, San Diego will start to see a more stable pattern, with mostly sunny skies and a high near 65°F. Winds will remain mild, and conditions should improve for outdoor activities. However, the dry spell may be short-lived as Tuesday brings an increase in clouds, along with cooler temperatures and a chance for fog.

Kintsugi is the ancient Japanese technique of repairing ceramics with gold. In Japanese Zen aesthetics, broken bowls and dishes should continue to attract our respect and attention. The broken pieces should be reassembled and glued back together with a lacquer that is inflected with gold powder. There should be no attempt to hide or disguise the breaks but rather to make something artful out of them. Kintsugi is a wonderful metaphor for life. We all experience difficulties and traumatic events in our lives. Applying Kintsugi to our lives means being bold, rather than hiding the so-called cracks and imperfections in ourselves.

In this workshop you will learn a little about the history and philosophy of kintsugi while repairing two ceramic pieces to take home. Learn to embellish your pieces using both gold mica powders and gold leaf colors. Students will also receive complete instructions and a supply list, as well as receiving a sample of your choice of three gold mica powder colors.

Feel free to bring in your own piece for me to look at and give you some advice on. We MAY NOT in all likelihood, repair your piece during class, but you will get good insight on how to proceed at home.

All materials are included. Students will learn two distinct ways of highlighting the breaks of their provided ceramic pieces and will take home a unique piece.

Learn the Art of Intarsia Woodworking!

Saturday, May 10 or August 16, from 9am-2pm

Join us in the woodshop for this 5-hour intarsia woodworking workshop!

Intarsia is a woodworking technique that involves the use of varied shapes of wood to create an image or pattern. In this class, we will cover shop safety and how to use a scroll saw, as well as best practices for sanding and finishing.

Students will choose from a template to transfer to their wood, creating a mosaic-like decorative wall piece. Template options will be provided, and may be altered and edited based on skill level.

At the end of the workshop, each student will leave with their own intarsia project.

Materials are provided. We recommend students bring their own eye protection, ear protection & apron, but we have some for borrow if needed. Aprons for sale here.

No experience necessary. Ages 18+ welcome. Students are welcome to bring a lunch or snack for a break mid-class.

Researchers at University of California San Diego found that cigarette smoking continues to decline across the United States, largely driven by young adults. Their study, published in JAMA Network Open on April 25, 2025, reveals that the states with historically high smoking rates have seen the most dramatic declines. However, smoking cessation progress among adults over 50 has been much slower, which could prolong the public health burden of smoking-related diseases and death.

“The rapid decline in smoking among young adults is clear evidence that the smoking epidemic will come to an end in our lifetime,” said Matthew Stone, Ph.D., first author and assistant professor at the UC San Diego Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science and Moores Cancer Center member. “Indeed, we project that the national smoking prevalence will be under 5% by 2035. However, the much slower decline in smokers over the age of 50, particularly in previously high smoking states, will mean that the high rates of lung cancer, heart disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease that are caused by lifelong smoking will take longer to decrease.”

Researchers used the publicly available Tobacco Use Supplements to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey. The survey is a large — approximately 54,000 households — monthly representative survey that provides information on employment and economic well-being. For this study, all analyses were conducted between June and October 2024. A total of 1.77 million respondents were analyzed.

The study found:

Since the 1950s, when researchers first linked smoking to lung cancer, national smoking rates have dropped dramatically. In 1955, 56.9% of U.S. adults smoked. By the turn of the century, that figure had fallen by more than half, and by 2022, it had dropped again by 50%. The trend is expected to continue, with smoking rates projected to halve again by 2035. Recent evidence indicates that states that have made the greatest progress in reducing smoking have also seen the largest declines in lung cancer mortality — typically with a 16-year lag.

“While the ongoing decline in cigarette smoking is a major public health success story,” said John P. Pierce, Ph.D., corresponding author and Distinguished Professor at the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science and Moores Cancer Center. “Recent evidence suggests that the tobacco industry has successfully recruited a new generation of teenagers into e-cigarette use and nicotine addiction. Further research is needed to assess the long-term impact of this shift.”
