Intense Santa Ana winds buffeted Southern California on Saturday, with officials warning of damaging gusts and the potential of "small fire activity" through the weekend.

The gusty conditions are expected to continue across Los Angeles and Ventura counties on Saturday with moderate to strong Santa Ana winds persisting through Sunday, the National Weather Service’s area forecast said Saturday. The strongest winds will affect the San Gabriel and Santa Susana mountains, with "damaging gusts" reaching 60 to 70 mph.

The advisory said temperatures will continue to rise through the weekend, with widespread highs in the 80s. The Los Angeles Marathon on Sunday "could now see temperatures peak around 90 degrees by the end of the event." The weather service said conditions are likely to cool early next week but forecast a "temperature whiplash" with another warm and dry spell expected to start on Wednesday.

High-wind warnings in the San Gabriel, Santa Monica and Santa Susana mountains, including the Highway 14 corridor, remain in effect through 3 p.m. Saturday. Widespread wind advisories across the region are in place until 6 p.m. The weather service warns gusty winds can lead to "downed trees and powerlines as well as isolated power outages."

No high-wind warnings are expected for Sunday, the weather service said, but advisories likely will continue with gusts mostly ranging from 35 to 50 mph. Strong winds can make travel difficult, the advisory warned, urging residents to take extra caution, including watching for falling debris and trees and, in high-wind warning zones, remaining in the lower levels of their home during a windstorm and avoiding windows.

Several small fires broke out across the area Saturday but were knocked down within hours by responding firefighters. One of the blazes was at a three-story home in the 8500 block of W. Oak Ct. in the Hollywood Hills. The Los Angeles Fire Department said more than 100 firefighters extinguished the blaze in less than two hours and reported no injuries.

ORANGE, Calif. (KABC) -- It's another breezy day in Southern California. The Santa Ana winds have officially returned and they're expected to gust through the weekend.

A wind advisory across Orange County is in effect until Sunday night.

Miguel Aguilar is a tow truck driver in the Villa Park area and said winds were noticeable Friday morning, and after doing this job for 10 years, he's aware of the impact wind events have on the roads.

"This is a big truck. It's high, so as high as it is, we feel it stronger," Aguilar said. "We have to be careful and take care of each other on the road."

In Moreno Valley, winds were howling there too and the winds are expected to intensify this weekend. Parts of San Bernardino and Riverside counties, inland Orange County and the Santa Ana Mountains and foothills can see gusts of up to 50 mph.

Isolated gusts of up to 65 mph are also in the forecast.

Scott Epstein, South Coast Air Quality Management District Assessment Manager, warns of a windblown dust advisory, recommending that as residents brace for a windy weekend, they check air quality levels -- and if they become unhealthy, limit time outdoors.

"We're expecting to see pretty widespread dust levels in the Coachella Valley, throughout the Inland Empire and even into Orange County," Epstein said. "People that are especially susceptible to the impacts of air quality are the elderly, young children, pregnant women and people that have preexisting conditions. They can be especially impacted. But everybody can have health impacts from breathing in polluted air."

You can monitor real-time air quality data on AQMD's website, but they caution, even if your area looks to be healthy, some particles are too large to be detected by their system. So if you go outside and you physically see particles in the air, that's a really good sign that you should take precautions.

For Elizabeth Delgadillo, an 18-year-old Santa Ana College student, attending Mass on Ash Wednesday has been a family tradition since childhood. Now returning to the Catholic faith on her own terms, she said she is learning to rebuild her relationship with God.

“I’m trying to find my own way to be with God,” she said Wednesday after the morning service at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Santa Ana, where she joined parishioners in marking the start of the solemn season of Lent.

For those of the Christian faith — including Catholics, evangelicals and other denominations — the ritual of wearing ashes on the forehead symbolizes the dust from which God is believed to have created humans. It is an outward sign of repentance.

Ash Wednesday starts the 40-day period of spiritual introspection leading up to Easter.

Delgadillo said she views faith as a way of connecting people across generations and cultures, especially at a time when many of her peers are experiencing isolation and drifting away from belief. For her, the church offers a bridge to community through shared faith, she said.

She sees Lent as an opportunity to “let go” and reflect, she said, treating her deepening relationship with faith as a chance for self-improvement and growth.

“Sometimes faith separates people, but here it brings everyone together,” she said. “They come to pray for anyone that needs the prayer.”

Hugo Jasso, 44, considers Lent his opportunity to look inward, he said. To reflect on his spiritual life, reconnect with Jesus and return to the teachings that call him to love, forgive and accept others.

“Obviously, there are people who have hurt us,” Jasso, a Santa Ana resident, said in Spanish.

When he was growing up in Mexico, discipline often came in the form of punishment rather than conversation, Jasso said. “Many people grow up with resentment because of that.”

A few years ago, Jasso said, he began going to church. Through prayer and reflection, he said, he learned how to heal that resentment.

“When you let go of that resentment, it’s like saying, ‘I’m no longer going to be upset about this,’ ” Jasso added.

After spending the morning delivering Mass and communion, the Rev. Armando Virrey described Ash Wednesday as both a ceremonial and deeply personal preparation for Easter and the passage into eternal life.

“As Catholics, this is a time to avoid superficiality and an unfocused life,” Virrey said in Spanish. “Personally, it means giving more time to the things of God. To prayer, meditation, mercy, practicing works of charity with others and giving up things that distract us from our center, which is our faith.”

Virrey said that when people live separated from the essentials that tie them to their faith, they begin to focus on what he calls “worldly things.”

“We fill ourselves with unnecessary things that weigh us down,” he said. “It is necessary to leave those behind to follow Christ with a more (faithful) heart, better prepared to be with him in his passion, death and resurrection.”

Virrey added that Lent also calls on the faithful to stand in solidarity with brothers and sisters who suffer. A sign inside the church had a statement of prayer and support for all migrants.

“One of the three pillars of Lent — prayer, fasting and works of charity — calls us to stand with those who suffer, the needy, those who lack what is necessary to live with dignity, and also those who lack justice or support, immigrants who suffer,” Virrey said. “We must be in solidarity not only with those who lack material bread, but also offer them the charity of our prayer.”
