Two rounds of Santa Ana winds are forecast to hit Southern California this week, bringing the potential for downed trees and isolated power outages across Los Angeles and elsewhere.

The winds will arrive Monday in northwestern L.A. County and southern Ventura County, where forecasters predict windspeeds between 20 and 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph, said Robbie Munroe, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Oxnard. Winds are expected to mostly subside by the early evening, he said.

Another Santa Ana event is expected to hit those same areas Wednesday into Thursday, he said.

Unlike onshore winds, which bring in moisture as they blow from the ocean over the land, Santa Ana winds originate inland, gaining speed, warming up and drying out as they move from higher to lower elevations and squeeze through narrow canyons and passes. They’re also known as the “Devil Winds” and have historically fueled the worst fires in the region’s history, including the deadly firestorms in January.

But in the near term, that risk has been alleviated in the region thanks to some recent record-breaking rain.

This week’s Santa Anas are expected to be on the cooler side, with highs in the 60s and 70s, Munroe said. Overnight temperatures are expected to drop in the wake of each wind event, with widespread lows in the 40s for most areas and pockets of lows in the mid-20s to low 30s, he said.

The winds are expected to be strongest in the western San Fernando Valley, Santa Clarita Valley, Santa Monica Mountains and interior Los Angeles mountains near Acton southwest into Ventura County. Forecasters consider this to be the typical Santa Ana wind corridor.

Though forecasters are not concerned about fire risks, those driving on elevated roads or in high-profile vehicles should take care.

Conditions are forecast to heat up Friday through the weekend, with temperatures at least 3 to 6 degrees above normal, according to the Weather Service.

The National Weather Service (NWS) is warning the region about strong Santa Ana winds and significantly cooler conditions that will impact much of the area Monday, with more blustery conditions expected later in the week.

Santa Ana winds are returning to parts of the area on Monday as the jet stream continues to push storms north of Southern California and into the Great Basin.

According to the NWS, today's Santa Ana event is not expected to be strong, but easterly gusts could reach the 40s in the mountains and the 30s at lower elevations, mainly across Ventura County and the northwestern portion of LA County.

The NWS issued a wind advisory that will be in effect through 3 p.m. for the Western San Gabriel Mountains and 14 Freeway corridor, where northeast winds of 20 to 30 mph were likely, with gusts up to 50 mph.

A wind advisory was also in place until 3 p.m. for the Santa Clarita Valley, western Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Area, Calabasas, Agoura Hills and the western San Fernando Valley, where gusts of up to 45 mph were possible.

Temperatures across the coast and valleys are expected to top out in the mid-60s to lower 70s, which is a much cooler event than the Santa Ana observed last week.

Winds will diminish in the late afternoon today, though some offshore breezes may continue through the canyons into Tuesday morning.

Outside the areas impacted by the Santa Anas, today will be quiet, with some areas of dense fog along the Central Coast and chilly morning lows in wind-protected and interior areas.

Looking Ahead

Timeline:

By Tuesday and Wednesday, an offshore flow will weaken and turn onshore, leading to a cooling trend near the coast. There will be little temperature change across the valleys, the NWS said.

On Thursday, another weak to moderate Santa Ana wind event is expected in the same areas impacted on Monday.

From Friday through next weekend, temperatures will be on the upswing as a high-pressure system moves into the eastern Pacific, according to the NWS.

La Niña Pattern

The current weather setup, characterized by Santa Ana winds pushing storms well north, is a "common La Niña set up."

La Niña is a climate pattern in the Pacific Ocean defined by the cooling of the surface water in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific, which can significantly influence weather patterns globally.

RUNNING SPRINGS, Calif. (KABC) -- More than 20 people, including adults and teenagers, were treated Sunday night after a bus overturned on a highway near Running Springs.

The crash happened on Highway 330 just before 9 p.m.

According to the San Bernardino County Fire Department, the bus, which was carrying a church group of 36 people, was heading home to Orange County after attending a camp near Angelus Oaks.

The group was with Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Santa Ana, according to the Diocese of Orange, which released a statement on the crash Monday morning.

"The group attended a three-day parish youth retreat at Camp Nawakwa in the San Bernardino Mountains," read the statement. "About 125 people, including teens, retreat staff and volunteers, participated in the event, which started Friday and ended Sunday. After the retreat, attendees left in several vans and one bus - the bus that was later involved in the accident."

"We extend our deepest gratitude to the first-responder agencies for their prompt and professional response in safely evacuating passengers and ensuring they received proper medical attention. We will provide further updates as information becomes available. Until then, our entire Diocese of Orange community will keep all those affected in prayer, and we thank all for their continued support."

The county fire department said 26 people were treated, three of whom had major injuries.

Of the 26 patients, 20 were sent to area hospitals, all by ambulances. The rest declined treatment, the fire department said.

Witnesses say the bus caught fire before it crashed and flipped over.

"They were braking and then right when he hit this turn right here, you could tell it was about to flip, so he jerked it into the wall and tried to stop it, but it didn't obviously work out," one witness said.

Crews said everyone was able to get out, with some climbing through the top hatch of the bus.

The California Highway Patrol is the lead agency investigating the cause of the crash. Police say there's no suspicion of DUI.

The county fire department said in February, crews participated in a drill that featured a scenario involving an overturned school bus with adults and teens on board.

"Several of the rescuers on scene [Sunday] night participated in that drill, providing them with valuable experience in this kind of incident," said the fire department.

SANTA ANA, Calif. -- Twenty people were hospitalized, three with major injuries, after a bus carrying teens returning from a church camp overturned on a winding mountain road in Southern California, authorities said Monday.

The bus with 36 people aboard crashed Sunday night at a curve on State Route 330 near Running Springs, about 70 miles northeast of Los Angeles, according to the San Bernardino County Fire Department.

First responders found the bus on its side, with passengers escaping through a roof hatch, said a fire department statement.

"A total of 26 patients, including three with major injuries, were treated. Of those, 20 were transported to area hospitals, all by ground ambulances," the statement said. The others declined to be transported.

Fire department photos showed paramedics tending to patients, some wearing neck braces, seated in a triage area set up on the highway.

There was no fire or hazardous material exposure, the fire department said.

The bus, carrying adults and teens, was traveling downhill back to Orange County after a three-day youth retreat at Camp Nawakwa near the tiny community of Angelus Oaks in the San Bernardino Mountains, said Jarryd Gonzales, a spokesperson for the Diocese of Orange.

About 125 people, including teens, staff and volunteers from Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Santa Ana participated in the event, he said. They were heading home in several vans and the bus that was involved in the accident.

"We extend our deepest gratitude to the first-responder agencies for their prompt and professional response in safely evacuating passengers and ensuring they received proper medical attention," Gonzales said in a statement.

State Route 330 is a two-lane highway that curves along cliffsides and through forest areas near Running Springs at an elevation of about 6,100 feet (1,860 meters).

The route was closed in both directions during the investigation, which was led by the California Highway Patrol.
