SCOTTSDALE, AZ (AZFamily) — First responders have found a 14-year-old boy safe who walked into the McDowell Sonoran Preserve on Thursday and was not seen for hours.

Investigators say Roman Reid went missing from his home in the area of 128th Street and Cactus Road around 12:30 p.m. Police said he walked from the home without his cellphone to the Lost Dog Wash Trailhead at the preserve. Police were concerned due to the extremely hot temperatures.

Police said he was known to hike in the area, so firefighters and officers searched on the ground and from the air for him. Around 7 a.m., somebody in Fountain Hills saw Roman sitting on the sidewalk next to the road, police said. The passerby knew a teen was missing in the area and described Roman as needing help, police said.

Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Rural Metro firefighters were called and arrived at the scene. Roman was then taken to the hospital for treatment.

Detectives said there was nothing suspicious about what happened. They said Roman got hurt while hiking and got disoriented. The teen is now back home with his family.

Authorities closed the trailhead for the search overnight, but they reopened it Friday morning.

Axon ended its talks with Scottsdale regarding plans to expand its headquarters, citing a "toxic environment."

Axon President Josh Isner met with Scottsdale Mayor Lisa Borowsky on Monday, June 9 and released a statement, saying, "Unfortunately, Axon is withdrawing from negotiations with the City of Scottsdale. The internal politics of the City Council currently make it impossible to reach an agreement. I have never seen such a toxic environment in my life. We put a great deal on the table and we tried our best."

Mayor Borowsky responded by saying, "I appreciate Axon’s efforts to come to the table and engage in meaningful dialogue regarding the future of their development. Their team was willing to make concessions to their existing plan, which I appreciate. Unfortunately, there were too many hurdles to overcome in order to move an agreement forward successfully. I remain hopeful that future negotiations result in a win-win agreement that work for the community and keeps this vital employer right where it belongs — in Scottsdale."

Axon will stay in Scottsdale, and it will expand its HQ on a 74-acre lot.

It had been trying to come to some sort of agreement with the city to reduce the number of housing units it planned to build for its employees. But now, Axon says it will go back to its initial plan, which included nearly 2,000 units.

What they're saying:

"We went to the city with, you know, the intention of giving back some of what we're legally allowed to do now in an effort to move forward in a cooperative and, you know, a partnership-oriented way," Axon President Josh Isner said.

For the past three weeks, he says he's been working with the Scottsdale City Council, and all but three members were in agreement with Axon's plans.

"I have never seen such a level of toxicity. And just, you know, a level of dysfunction that I've seen in this group," he said.

The agreement with the city included building fewer apartments on the 74-acre lot. Isner says because of the internal politics of the city, they weren't able to come to a deal.

"You know, frankly, if Scottsdale residents aren't happy with the extra 500 apartments, they should address those concerns to the three obstructionists that kept this deal from getting done," he said.

The company is moving forward with the original plan approved under a bill signed earlier this year allowing the company to bypass the vote and go ahead with construction.

"The governor signed into law the state statute that allows us to build our campus, and so that is not in question. We are going to build our campus in Scottsdale, Arizona," Isner said.

He says the planning process has started, and anticipates breaking ground in the near future.

FOX 10 reached out to the three Scottsdale City Council members Isner referred to, but we have not heard back.

The backstory:

In April, Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs approved SB1543, giving the . She said it would provide more than 5,500 jobs and is projected to generate an estimated $38 billion in economic impact in the next decade.

On April 19, , "I am disappointed with the way the Axon Bill has played out, culminating with the Governor signing this awful legislation—-without any discussion with representatives of #Scottsdale, knowing the impact it will have exclusively on our communities. I stand with the people of Scottsdale in opposition to the legislature’s unconstitutional overreach. The city is evaluating all legal remedies in response. We must protect the character of our community and our voters’ right to the legally obtained referendum process."

When Gov. Hobbs approved the bill, it meant major companies that build corporate headquarters in Arizona would be entitled to build housing for its employees. Axon CEO Rick Smith said he wanted to build 1,900 new apartments for its employees.

A group named Taxpayers Against Awful Apartment Zoning Exemptions (TAAAZE) were against the expansion from the very beginning.

"It’s not necessary for him to override the will of the Scottsdale voters and to basically put a thumb in their eye, when they have made it clear over the last couple of elections, both by who they elected, and by the referendums, that they don’t want another 2,000 apartments," .

SCOTTSDALE, AZ — Axon has announced it is no longer negotiating with the City of Scottsdale for its plans to build a headquarters in the city.

On Monday, Axon President Josh Isner released a statement after meeting with Scottsdale Mayor Lisa Borowsky, writing,

Axon’s proposal for a massive new headquarters was supposed to go before Scottsdale voters in 2026, but a bill passed in April by the Arizona House blocked the election.

Scottsdale-based Axon Enterprise, which manufactures Tasers and body cameras, wanted to build a 400,000-square-foot corporate campus off the Loop 101 that would include restaurants, a hotel and 1,900 apartments.

Officials with Axon have since clarified that they are not halting efforts in the proposed headquarters, but are no longer working with the Scottsdale City Council in its efforts.

Following the announcement, Mayor Lisa Borowsky issued the following statement:

“I appreciate Axon’s efforts to come to the table and engage in meaningful dialogue regarding the future of their development. Their team was willing to make concessions to their existing plan, which I appreciate.

Until recently, IKEA had one store in metro Phoenix: the one in Tempe. But, just like that, soon there will be three.

Swedish furniture and home goods giant IKEA announced plans to open a third Valley location, this one in Phoenix, on May 7, the same day it opened a new-look IKEA in Scottsdale.

The store, which will be a smaller format than a traditional IKEA store, is planned to open early next year, the company announced.

“We are thrilled to offer Phoenix metro area residents more ways to shop and experience IKEA.” Javier Quiñones, CEO & chief sustainability officer for IKEA U.S., said in a statement. “These new locations highlight our commitment to bring IKEA closer to the many people and make it easier and more affordable to access our home furnishing products and solutions.”

Where will the Phoenix IKEA store be?

It will be in the Village Square II shopping center at Cactus Road and Tatum Boulevard. It is across the street from the former Paradise Valley Mall, now called PV, which is in the middle of a major redevelopment.

What will the IKEA Phoenix store be like?

The store is one level and covers approximately 75,000 square feet. It will offer customers access to over 23,000 items, primarily consisting of home furnishing accessories and about 75 small furniture items. The store will also have a new Swedish Deli concept, offering a variety of hot and cold food to eat on site or take home. This includes meatballs, plant balls, hot dogs, veggie dogs, plant dogs and cinnamon buns.

What is different about the new Scottsdale IKEA?

IKEA opened its second Arizona location, a small-format store at the Scottsdale Promenade, on May 7, the same day it announced plans for the Phoenix store.

The Scottsdale location is a small format “plan and order point” where customers can browse the showroom and talk to employees about their plans for their homes, and order items. There is no stock at the studio, all the items are ordered.

Where are the other Arizona IKEA stores?

There is a full-format IKEA store on West IKEA Way in Tempe, near Interstate 10 and Warner Road. It opened in 2004.

In 2017, IKEA announced plans to open a full-size store in Glendale, but that never came to fruition and the company canceled plans for the location in 2018. The site IKEA had eyed is now the site where VAI Resort is under construction, near Loop 101 and Cardinals Way.
