When Sam Elliott was cast in "Landman" season 2, he found the whole thing overwhelming. Even a star of his stature was somewhat daunted by joining such a successful show part-way through its run, but was absolutely delighted to re-team with his old pal and star of the Paramount+ series, Billy Bob Thornton. As it turns out, though, Thornton struggled with one aspect of filming with Elliott, specifically when it came to clashing with his longtime buddy.

In an interview with Variety, Thornton was asked about his most challenging scene from season 2 and revealed that he struggled when it came to conflict between him and his on-screen dad. "Maybe not every actor is this way, but I can't help it because I'm so codependent," he said. "Some of the hardest stuff I had to do was when I had to be abrupt to, or even mean with, Sam Elliott. Sam and I are old, old friends. He's been like a pop to me since I've known him in the '80s." Thornton went on to explain that Elliot has been a "mentor" and a "friend" for years, which makes it harder to commit to certain scenes. "Sometimes, knowing the other human, it's not as easy to just go for it," he added. "But you have to. You have to go 100%."

Thornton likened the experience to his time shooting 2003's "Bad Santa," the black comedy that contains a line which perfectly sums up Thornton's "Landman" character. That film required him to be similarly mean to the young cast members, which he found difficult. "It's not like I could be really sweet with the kids," he explained. "I actually explained that to the kids on that set and to the parents. But I would say that was the most challenging thing."

"Landman" has been a massive hit for Paramount, which is unsurprising seeing as it comes from the hit TV series-making machine that is Taylor Sheridan. Still, making the show doesn't come without its share of challenges. A "Landman" season 2 scene went horribly wrong for Angela Norris actor Ali Larter, for example, and the biggest on-set challenge for the "Landman" crew remains the sweltering West Texas heat. Then, there's Billy Bob Thornton having to yell at his friend Sam Elliott.

Elliott, who previously led the "Yellowstone" spin-off "1883," has worked with Thornton several times before. The latter had a cameo appearance on "1883" and worked with Elliott on the eminently quotable Western that also featured Val Kilmer's best performance, "Tombstone," in which the latter played Virgil Earp and Thornton played Johnny Tyler. More importantly, however, the two actors share a genuine off-screen friendship to the extent that Thornton became overwhelmed when he learned Elliott would play his father in "Landman" season 2.

The Tommy Norris actor told CinemaBlend, "I've loved Sam as a human being and an actor for so long that when I found out that Sam was playing the part, I told my wife, and I started crying." With that in mind, it's no wonder Thornton struggled to yell at his friend while shooting "Landman" season 2. Luckily for us, and perhaps unfortunately for him, season 3 of the oil drama is set to start filming around May of 2026, with Elliott confirmed to return. So there'll be a lot more uncomfortable clashes between the veteran stars to come.

The Landman cast is one big happy family

As tough as Billy Bob Thornton found arguing with Sam Elliott on "Landman" season 2, the easy chemistry between co-stars seems to makes things a little smoother. In his Variety interview, Thornton went on to praise the "great chemistry" between cast members, which according to him was "instant."

The star also reflected on how he, Elliott, Danny "Gallino" Morrell actor Andy Garcia, and Cami Miller actor Demi Moore "go way back." But what surprised the actor was how he got along with the cast members with whom he'd never worked before. According to Thornton, Ali Larter, Michelle Randolph, and Jacob Lofland (who play Angela, Ainsley, and Cooper Norris, respectively) all got along from the beginning, as did Rebecca Falcone actor Kayla Wallace and Dale Bradley actor James Jordan. "None of us knew each other," said Thornton. "But somehow we had a chemistry that was there from day one. It's also a tribute to Taylor [Sheridan, show co-creator and writer], because he knows who to cast and for what part."

Thornton went on to praise Sheridan — who similarly loves working with Sam Elliott — for giving each character a distinct voice rather than falling into what he views as a common trap of writers writing "with their own voice for every character." The actor continued, "Each person on this show is their own thing. I love that. So when you have chemistry like that, but not everyone's talking the same ... One of the most brilliant things Taylor's done with his shows is he has very strong individual characters with their own voices."

Landman is taking the world by storm with its action-packed plotlines, but just like many other Taylor Sheridan shows, the plot is just part of what makes the show successful. The music is a significant factor in his shows’ success, often highlighting emerging and established country artists. From featuring Zach Bryan to helping Whiskey Myers become a household name, Yellowstone made a show pillar, highlighting the western community beyond ranching through music, and now Landman is following that motto.

Sheridan has crafted a star-studded list of artists featured in each season, ranging from the Turnpike Troubadours and the Red Clay Strays to Tanner Usrey and Lance Roark. But this season, the leading man on screen, Billy Bob Thornton, stepped in to help with the music for Season 2.

Billy Bob Thornton played a role in the Landman soundtrack, Landman – Songs From and Inspired by the Paramount+ Original Series (Volume I). He and Mark Collie, who plays Sheriff Walt Joeberg in the hit series, are credited with helping out on 5 of the 15 songs that are featured on the soundtrack.

Thornton had previously said that he had put together songs that were inspired by the show itself, and that he wasn’t sure if they’d ever find a home:

“We wrote a couple of songs (that) were kind of inspired by the area, that business world. We’ll see if they end up on anything. And maybe they will, maybe they won’t, but they’re at least there.”

But it did not stop there. Billy Bob Thornton teamed up with more songwriters for Landman – Songs From and Inspired by the Paramount+ Original Series (Volume II), further showcasing his songwriting talent. One of the songs he had a hand in penning from Volume II, “Lay Your Heartache Onto Mine,” was released this week, written alongside Jessie Jo Dillon and Carter Faith and was produced by the legendary Dave Cobb.

This is not Carter Faith and Billy Bob Thornton’s first time working together, as he starred in her “Bar Star” music video and was the inspiration behind Faith’s single titled after the legendary actor. I have a feeling 2026 is the year Carter Faith blows up, and “Lay Your Heartache Onto Mine” is a strong start for the “Six String” singer.

The tragically beautiful song has a Spanish feel, which lends itself perfectly to the male feature, William Beckmann, a Del Rio, TX native with Mexican heritage on both sides of his family.

The ballad features a soft melody that lets the heartbreaking lyrics speak for themselves, as Faith and Beckmann embody two star-crossed lovers who drown their sorrows together on the dance floor.

“Lay your heartache onto mine Underneath these dance hall lights Play somethin’ slow and country, uh-huh It’s a long, lonely night Send a message in the wine I’d like to think that we’ll be fine Yeah, at least till closin’ time Lay your heartache onto mine”

Beckmann and Faith’s lyrics pair perfectly together, and it makes me want to hear more from these two emerging artists.

Landman's Billy Bob Thornton is making waves once again as the hit series continues its second season, and the veteran actor has spilled some fascinating behind-the-scenes secrets about his co-stars.

The Paramount Plus drama features Thornton as oil industry fixer Tommy Norris, surrounded by a powerhouse ensemble cast delivering knockout performances across the board.

Thornton also highlighted Wallace's stark difference from her sharp-tongued legal eagle character, noting: "Kayla Wallace who plays her - she's such a sweet person."

He added with a chuckle: "It's hard sometimes [...] any time I had to say mean things to Kayla or she had to say them to me... I mean she's Canadian, so she had to apologise after saying stuff like, 'Are you ok?'"

Hinting at a softer dynamic between Tommy and Rebecca in the upcoming season, he shared: "The relationship does soften up some, but we still do have our sparring matches."

In the same interview, the actor delved into how the second season will further explore Tommy's relationship with his children, reports the Express.

He disclosed: "There's absolutely more stuff with Cooper. I mean, the first season is honestly just us either ignoring each other or getting in an argument over something.

"This year there's some of that, but you will get to see how much Tommy loves his kid and his ex wife/wife."

Speaking about the broader scope of the show's second installment, set against the backdrop of West Texas' bustling towns, he added: "In terms of characters, you're going to see a lot more this season of the family dynamic and what's really at the core of each person.

"Because in the first season, you had Taylor setting up the oil business. We had to explain the oil business, introduce all the characters and all the players in it. And now the audience knows this, so we really get to dive deep."

It comes after Thornton revealed the 'hardest part' of working with Sam Elliot in season 2.
