An Alabama man has been charged in the rape of woman in Tuscaloosa that happened more than 15 years ago.

Stacey Deangelo Martin, now 39, has been indicted on first-degree rape, authorities announced Friday.

The investigation began in March 2020 when a woman reported that she had been sexually assaulted by two men she met at a bar called the Southern Gentleman’s Club, which at the time was in the 7000 block of Martin Luther King Boulevard.

The victim had just met the suspects that night and did not know them, said Tuscaloosa County Violent Crimes Unit Capt. Jack Kennedy.

Investigators at the time were not able to develop any suspect, but they recovered DNA that was verified to be from two separate men.

Kennedy said the violent crimes unit was notified over the summer that one of the DNA profiles had been matched to Martin who had been arrested in in July in Tuscaloosa County on unrelated drug charges.

The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences maintains a database of certain arrestees and convicted offenders’ DNA to be used in the investigation and prosecution of crimes.

Investigators began working the case again and this month indicted Martin on the rape charge. He was 25 at the time of the assault.

He was booked into the Tuscaloosa County Jail Thursday and remains held without bond. His arraignment is set for December.

Kennedy said the second assailant has not been identified.

“It was clear at the time of the offense (March 2010) that he and the unidentified suspect knew and were familiar with each other,” Kennedy said.

The second suspect was described as an older Black male, possibly 35-50 years old.

“The Violent Crimes Unit maintains a dedicated group of investigators who specialize in both child and adult sex crimes,” Kennedy said. “In addition to working with victims daily and investigating current cases, they also continuously review unsolved cases from the past.”

Just two weeks after a visit from ESPN’s College Gameday, Alabama is set to host another top-15 matchup in Tuscaloosa as No. 11 Tennessee comes to town.

The Third Saturday in October rivalry is always a big deal to both fanbases but this year’s game will have a clear impact on the national championship picture + the SEC standings. And another pregame show will be in town to highlight the matchup.

SEC Nation, the weekly college football show on SEC Network, will be in Tuscaloosa this weekend. Here’s what you need to know:

The show is hosted by Laura Rutledge with analysis provided by Tim Tebow, Paul Finebaum, Jordan Rodgers and former Alabama defensive back Roman Harper.

Finebaum will also host his daily radio show from campus on Friday from 2-6PM.

Students and fans have the opportunity for up-close view of the show by standing in the pit immediately adjacent to the stage. Selection is on a first-come, first-serve basis for all fans.

Students admitted to the pit are encouraged to wear school colors and gear. Participants are subject to ESPN security procedures and policies.

All signs brought to Saturday’s taping will be inspected before entry and must abide by ESPN’s sign policies or will be removed.

This weekend may be the most anticipated game in Tuscaloosa this season as Alabama looks to avenge last season’s loss to the Volunteers + get bragging rights back in the rivalry.

Here’s what you need to know before kickoff:

Alabama leads the all-time rivalry series 59-40-7 but Tennessee has won two of the last three meetings, following a 15-game winning streak from the Crimson Tide during the Nick Saban era.

Kalen DeBoer lost his debut in the rivalry in Knoxville last season but he’ll have the home crowd behind him this time around. Alabama has not lost to Tennessee in Tuscaloosa since 2003.

Tennessee may walk into Bryant-Denny Stadium and beat No. 6 Alabama in Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday.

But they haven’t done it in 22 years. And they barely did it then, back on Oct. 25, 2003.

Alabama had the Vols dead to rights during the second overtime, in which the Tide had already scored a touchdown and only needed a stop to win the game.

On 4th-and-19, a down and distance that draws a shudder from Bama fans to this day, Casey Clausen completed a 29-yard pass to C.J. Fayton to extend the game. Tennessee won 51-43 in five OTs.

This marked the Vols’ last win in Tuscaloosa. Nick Saban coached his first season just four years later, winning his first 15 games against Tennessee and running through six head coaches (not counting interim) in the process.

And to be fair, Alabama had not beaten Tennessee in Tuscaloosa since 1930 before they finally defeated the Vols in 2005, a win that has since been vacated. (Note: They game was not played in Tuscaloosa between 1930 and 1999.)

Alabama will look to make it 11 straight in Tuscaloosa on Saturday.
