NORFOLK, Va. — A dangerous stretch of winter weather is setting up for Hampton Roads and northeast North Carolina this weekend, with high confidence that a significant winter storm will impact the region Saturday into Sunday.
Conditions deteriorate quickly on Saturday as snow develops and spreads across the region. Temperatures will remain locked below freezing, with a forecast high in the mid 20s, allowing snow to accumulate efficiently.
By Saturday evening, the storm is expected to be near peak intensity with snow tapering off early Sunday morning.

11:00 p.m. Friday — Chesapeake prepares for the snow
The City of Chesapeake already has crews on the road in preparation for the weekend weather.
More than 40 trucks and 8 million pounds of salt are ready to hit the roads, according to Heath Covey, the city's director of communications.
Covey said crews have been pre-treating the roads since Wednesday.
"They've been working 24/7 and they'll be doing that all the way through until we get through everything," he said.
Covey said plows will head out, but only once there are at least two inches of snow on the ground, and the plows will only be on major roads. He said they are expecting dry snow and lots of wind.
"So, our crews are going to plow snow, and half an hour later, with the wind, it's going to look like we haven't been there, but it would be much worse if they hadn't," Covey said.
While the city focuses on major roadways, private companies, like Schultz Landscaping, are out and about ready to keep parking lots clear. Crew leader Warren Murphy said they will have crews out during the entire weekend.
Covey said the city is asking people to stay off the roads as much as possible, especially with the risk of tidal flooding.
"When it goes back down, it's going to be subzero," he said. "Areas where new water has come from the flooding very easily ice over."
He's also encouraging people to take care of last-minute errands before the snow starts to fall.
Covey said there could be delays in trash services next week due to the snow. He said people should still put out their bins as normal and check out the city's social media pages for updates.
9:30 p.m. Friday — Waves of Hope: Hope Amplified postponed
The event, held at the Dome, was scheduled for 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. and would've had a dinner and concert in order to raise money for local cancer patients, courtesy of Hampton Roads Cancer Care Foundation.
The event is being postponed as the City of Virginia Beach has closed all city-owned buildings and activities for tomorrow.
The event will be rescheduled to a later date, and the new date will be announced sometime next week.

6:10 p.m. Friday — Virginia Beach readies for wintry weekend
Preparations continue in Virginia Beach, where public utility crews have started treating secondary roads ahead of the winter storm.
On Friday, Mayor Bobby Dyer met with Emergency Management officials as they outlined the steps the city will take in the event of blizzard-like conditions. Mayor Dyer told 13News Now they will face this storm like any other, with confidence and preparation.
"As we've proven time and time again, we are prepared, we are ready," said Mayor Dyer. "We want the citizens of Virginia Beach to feel safe knowing that their city is working hard."
Right now, more than 60 men and women will soon start 12-hour shifts for the next 48 hours to monitor weather conditions and respond. Brining operations began several days ago, as the primary roads, such as Virginia Beach Boulevard, have been treated numerous times.
It's not the only weather threat residents in Virginia Beach are facing, as coastal flooding is expected.
"Any area impacted by high-tide areas those are going be impacted on Saturday during that high-tide event," said LJ Hansen, Director of Public Works. "We'll be monitoring closely, especially as the tide goes out."
In preparation for this, city leaders have already closed the tidal gates at Cape Henry and Windsor Woods. All residents who live near flood-risk areas are encouraged to bring their cars to Town Center, where free parking is available. This includes:

Due to the impending inclement weather, the City of Suffolk advises that

3:30 p.m. Friday — HRT to suspend services on Saturday & Sunday
Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) announced it will end all services on Saturday ahead of the anticipated winter storm. HRT services will also not be running at all on Sunday, Feb. 1.
The last westbound Tide light rail train will depart Newtown Road Station at 2:05 p.m., arriving at EVMC/Fort Norfolk Station at 2:31 p.m. The last eastbound train is scheduled to depart EVMC/Fort Norfolk at 2:11 p.m., arriving at Newtown Road Station at 2:37 p.m.
The last Elizabeth River Ferry trip will depart Waterside Ferry Dock at 2:45 p.m. Paratransit, OnDemand Ridesharing, and Base Express service at Naval Station Norfolk will end at 3 p.m.
Transit center information booths and all administrative facilities will be closed. The Customer Service Call Center will close at 3 p.m.
HRT will implement its Snow Route service on Monday, Feb. 2. Under the snow route plan, HRT will provide hourly bus service on designated routes from 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. The light rail and ferry will operate every 30 minutes from 10 a.m. - 8 p.m.
Paratransit service, OnDemand Ridesharing and Base Express will not operate due to expected ice and snow on secondary roads and residential streets.
2:30 p.m. Friday — Town Center Garages available
The City of Virginia Beach announced that all facilities, including recreation centers, libraries, the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center, and Virginia Beach History Museums, will be closed on Saturday and Sunday.
For residents who need to move their vehicles out of flood-prone areas, four municipal garages at Town Center will be available starting Friday evening. Parking is free, but the public is asked to avoid parking in reserved spaces at the Town Center garages, as these spaces are leased by residents, and towing will be enforced. Be aware that if garages lose power, lighting and elevators will not be operable.

Ahead of this weekend's expected winter weather, some schools and businesses are announcing closures.
Suffolk Public Schools says all weekend activities have been canceled, while Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools announced they will be closed on Monday, February 2, 2026.
Meanwhile, the Norfolk Botanical Garden announced it would be closed on Saturday and Sunday, and it has also postponed the public reception and artist meet-and-greet for its third annual Diversity Gallery to Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. due to the expected storm.
In addition to those closures, the National Park Service is closing all visitor facilities at Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site and Wright Brothers National Memorial. Those locations will remain closed through at least Monday morning. The Oregon Inlet and Ocracoke campgrounds are also closed.
12 p.m. Friday — Norfolk on-street parking removed for plowing operations
The City of Norfolk said that to allow for plowing operations this weekend, on-street parking will be removed on Friday, Jan. 30, along Waterside Dr., Boush St., Main St. and Granby St. All City garages and surface lots will be open with gates raised, except the Cedar Grove Lot from 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30 through 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3. This timeframe may be extended depending on weather conditions.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — After more than five decades of birthday parties, school fundraisers and packed weekend skate sessions, Haygood Skating Center is closing its doors.
Owner Brandon Stokes announced on Facebook that this weekend will be the rink’s last, bringing an end to a community institution that has operated since 1974.
“For over 52 years, Haygood Skating Center has been a home for unforgettable moments,” Stokes wrote. “With heavy hearts, we share that this weekend will be our last weekend open for business.”
The skating rink, located at 1036 Ferry Plantation Road, has long served as a gathering place for generations of families in Virginia Beach — hosting everything from limbo contests and “shoot-the-duck” races to roller hockey, speed skating events, birthday parties and school PTA fundraisers.
Stokes has owned the rink for more than eight years, but his connection to Haygood runs much deeper. He said he was hired there as a 15-year-old, a full-circle moment that later allowed both of his children to work their first jobs at the rink as well.
“It was always my dream to buy the rink that hired me as a kid — and I did it,” Stokes wrote. “Even more special, both of my kids had their first jobs here, just like me.”
In his post, Stokes reflected on the rink’s long history, noting that when Haygood first opened, minimum wage was just $2 an hour — yet the joy of skating remained unchanged through decades of cultural and economic shifts.
“That’s because Haygood has always been, and will always be, special,” he wrote.
Stokes also thanked several people who played key roles in the rink’s legacy, including Ray and Cindy Chaput, who previously ran the rink, and Dana Chaput, who sold the business to Stokes. He gave special recognition to longtime staff members, including his mother, Robin Stokes, who has worked at Haygood for more than 25 years as a manager, cook, office staffer and even a DJ.
“This decision was NOT made easy,” Stokes wrote. “I promise I tried my hardest over the past two and a half years to keep it going. But sometimes God has different plans.”
The rink will host its final skate sessions this weekend, with hours from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday and 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Stokes encouraged longtime customers and former skaters to stop by — even if they don’t plan to skate — to walk through the building, take photos and reflect on memories made there.
“Even if you don’t skate, please come by,” he wrote. “Know that we all share incredible memories here that will never be forgotten.”
Stokes closed his announcement with a message of gratitude and humor, thanking the community for decades of support and reminding everyone that Haygood’s legacy lives on in the memories created on its floor.
“From the Stokes family — take care of each other, be kind,” he wrote. “Come skate with us one last time and help us celebrate 52 incredible years.”

A fire broke out on an upper floor of a high-rise in Virginia Beach. A woman was rescued from her 15th-floor balcony, and a firefighter was taken to the hospital.
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — An accidental kitchen fire summoned multiple Virginia Beach Fire Department units to the Cape Henry Towers on Wednesday evening.
Multiple people reported seeing smoke coming from an apartment on the upper floor of the large, 16-story apartment complex off Shore Drive, just east of the Lesner Bridge.
The call first came in at 4:37 p.m., the Virginia Beach Fire Department said.
One firefighter was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. There is no update on their condition at this time.
The fire was declared under control at 5:08 p.m. and marked out at 6:33 p.m. The American Red Cross was contacted to assist a displaced adult.
A portion of Page Avenue was closed to traffic Wednesday afternoon. People nearby said they called 911, after witnessing the flames and smoke.
“I pulled around and parked right over there, and I saw the fire, so I initially called," said Joey Schrier.
“At first it was just some smoke, it seemed a little bit cloudy, and then you could start to see some flames through the windows and whatnot," said Isaac Corbett, who saw fire while he was on the nearby beach.
Schrier said he saw a woman in distress on her balcony as smoke filled the air from her 15th-floor unit.
A viewer provided 13News Now a photo that appeared to show the incident:
“I did see her on the balcony, for a split second. I was mainly trying to make sure the first responders had room to do what they wanted, open the barricades, so they could park their units," said Schrier.
Virginia Beach Fire Captain, Carson Forrester, said their response immediately turned to a rescue as they addressed how to put out the fire.
With no way to reach the woman from the balcony, they advised her to shelter on it, 15 floors in the sky, as they battled the fire in her unit to reach her just in time, to pull her to safety.
“The 15th floor is out of reach of our ladder truck, so we know we’re going to have to make a quick entry and try to get up to remove the victim from the fire, or shelter in place, as we did in this situation," said Forrester.
“So it’s definitely a little scary, it kicks in your human nature, to feel bad for the person, and hope that everything is okay, and I do hope she’s okay," said Schrier.
Support staff went to the hospital to be with that firefighter as they begin their recovery.
