Standard English Bulldog colors are an important part of our breeding philosophy at IrresistiBulls. We believe in preserving the traditional English Bulldog while prioritizing health, structure, temperament, and responsible breeding practices.
At IrresistiBulls, we believe breeding English Bulldogs is about much more than producing puppies with unusual or trendy coat colors. Our goal has always been to preserve the traditional English Bulldog while prioritizing health, structure, temperament, and responsible breeding practices.
While blue, chocolate, lilac, and merle English Bulldogs have gained popularity in recent years, we have made the intentional decision not to breed for these non-standard colors. Instead, our breeding program focuses on the beautiful, traditional colors recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC).
Here is why that decision matters to us and to the families who welcome our English Bulldog puppies into their homes.
What Are the Standard English Bulldog Colors?
According to the American Kennel Club’s official Bulldog breed standard, recognized colors include red, white, fawn, fallow, and combinations of these colors.
Acceptable patterns and markings include brindle, piebald, ticking, black masks, and black tipping.
These traditional colors have been associated with English Bulldogs for generations and are part of the breed’s recognizable appearance.
At IrresistiBulls, we appreciate the classic beauty of red and white, fawn, and brindle English Bulldogs. We believe these traditional colors are just as beautiful today as they have always been.
Why We Don’t Breed Blue, Chocolate, or Lilac English Bulldogs
In recent years, breeders have increasingly advertised blue, chocolate, lilac, and other unusual Bulldog colors as rare or exotic.
These colors can attract attention, and puppies displaying them are sometimes marketed at significantly higher prices simply because of their appearance.
However, being rare does not automatically make a Bulldog healthier, better structured, or more desirable from a responsible breeding standpoint.
Blue, chocolate, and lilac are not recognized colors under the official AKC Bulldog breed standard.
Although a non-standard coat color does not automatically mean a dog is unhealthy, we believe breeding decisions should be guided by more meaningful characteristics than the popularity of a particular color.
Our priority is selecting breeding dogs based on their overall quality, health, structure, and temperament rather than attempting to produce a specific unusual appearance.
Why We Don’t Breed Merle English Bulldogs
Merle English Bulldogs have become particularly popular because of their distinctive mottled coats and sometimes striking eye colors.
However, the merle pattern is specifically disqualified under the AKC Bulldog breed standard.
The merle gene also requires careful consideration because certain breeding combinations can create serious health risks.
When two dogs carrying merle are bred together, their puppies can inherit two copies of the merle gene. These puppies, commonly called double merles, have an increased risk of hearing and vision abnormalities.
Not every merle dog has these conditions, but the genetic concerns associated with double-merle breeding are well documented.
At IrresistiBulls, we see no reason to introduce the merle pattern into our breeding program when our mission is to preserve the traditional English Bulldog.
Health Should Always Come Before Coat Color
English Bulldogs are a unique breed with specific health considerations. Their physical structure makes responsible breeding decisions especially important.
We believe breeders should focus on the qualities that contribute to a Bulldog’s overall health and quality of life.
These include:
– Appropriate health screening and informed breeding decisions
– Sound structure and functional movement
– Healthy breathing and respiratory function
– Stable, affectionate temperaments
– Responsible care of breeding dogs and puppies
– Thoughtful selection of breeding pairs
Coat color alone cannot determine whether an English Bulldog will be healthy. A traditionally colored Bulldog is not automatically healthier than one with a non-standard color.
However, we believe that prioritizing unusual colors can distract from the qualities that matter most when producing the next generation of English Bulldogs.
Our goal is never to produce a puppy simply because its color is fashionable.
Preserving the Traditional English Bulldog
The English Bulldog has a long history and a distinctive appearance that generations of breeders have worked to preserve.
From their broad heads and characteristic expressions to their sturdy bodies and affectionate personalities, Bulldogs have qualities that make them truly special.
We believe responsible breeders have an obligation to protect those qualities rather than continually changing the breed to follow the latest trends.
At IrresistiBulls, preserving the English Bulldog means respecting its established breed standard while striving to improve the health, temperament, and overall quality of future generations.
We are proud of the traditional English Bulldogs we produce and have no desire to change our breeding philosophy simply because a new color becomes popular.
Does an AKC-Registered English Bulldog Have to Be a Standard Color?
This is an important distinction for families researching English Bulldog breeders.
An English Bulldog may be eligible for AKC registration even if its coat color does not meet the official breed standard.
AKC registration and compliance with the AKC breed standard are not the same thing.
This is one reason we encourage prospective puppy owners to research breeders carefully and ask questions about their breeding practices, health screening, and goals.
A registration certificate alone does not guarantee that a Bulldog meets the breed standard or has been responsibly bred.
Choosing an English Bulldog Breeder Who Prioritizes Quality
When searching for English Bulldog puppies, it can be easy to focus on photographs, coat colors, and appearance.
However, choosing the right breeder involves much more than finding a puppy in your favorite color.
We encourage families to look for breeders who are knowledgeable about the breed, transparent about their breeding practices, and committed to producing healthy, well-structured English Bulldogs with wonderful temperaments.
A responsible English Bulldog breeder should be willing to discuss health testing, the parents of their puppies, their breeding philosophy, and the care their puppies receive before going to their new homes.
Choosing an English Bulldog puppy should never be based on coat color alone. Health, temperament, structure, and the breeder’s commitment to responsible practices should always come first.
