AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - Northwest Texas Healthcare System’s Freestanding Emergency Departments (FEDs) are closed for the time being.
The closures come amid ongoing pay disputes after emergency physicians say they haven’t been paid for seven weeks.
From Oct. 1 to Nov. 20 the NES, Northwest’s third-party contractor, violated its terms and was unable to meet the coverage requirement.
On Nov. 20, Northwest Emergency on Georgia and Northwest Emergency at Town Square intermittently closed their doors.
Since then, the providers at the clinics have been negotiating with another third-party contractor to resume payment.
The situation has significantly impacted the main hospital’s ER, leading to increased wait times and many patients needing care.
“This not only affects the doctors, nurse practitioners and physician assistants, this also directly impacts the rest of the staff - nurses, x-ray techs, lab techs, med techs and registration clerks,” said another anonymous NWTHS employee.
This impacts other healthcare workers who are being asked to work in different departments of the hospital or being forced to take PTO.
This situation is also greatly impacting the community that has come to rely on the excellent care provided at the Northwest FEDs.
With the FEDs shut down some patients are arriving with kids in respiratory distress and are not able to be seen, forcing them to drive across town and delaying critical care.
The employees hope this can be resolved so they can continue practicing medicine and serving patients during their most vulnerable time.
Employees say if the situation isn’t handled properly, it could lead to a potential strike.

Events and specials thanking past and present members of the military for their service, as well as their families, are taking place Friday through Monday, which is the official Veterans Day holiday.
Annual Veterans Day ceremony at War Memorial
"Veterans Day first began as Armistice Day to celebrate the ending of World War I," the War Memorial notes in an announcement for Monday's annual event. "World War I ended on the 11th minute of the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 (November 11, 1918, at 11:11 a.m.). Armistices Day first became a legal holiday in 1938; it was celebrated on November 11 each year. In 1954 the name was changed to Veterans Day to honor all who serve and have served in the military. In 1968 the holiday was moved to the fourth Monday of October in order for federal employees to have three-day weekends celebrating four national holidays that fell on Mondays, including Veterans Day. The first observance of the new date was in 1971; many states objected to the change and did not recognize the new date. In 1975 the observance date was changed back to November 11 with the first holiday on the new (November 11) date observed in 1978. If November 11 falls on a weekend, the holiday is observed the following Monday. While Veterans Day honors all service members, Memorial Day honors service members who lost their life in service to their country and honors our Gold Star Families. On Veterans Day, the US flag remains at full staff."
The Texas Panhandle War Memorial Center will host its annual Veterans Day Ceremony on Monday, Nov. 11 beginning at 11 a.m. at the War Memorial, located at 4111 S. Georgia. The program will include an invocation, presentation of colors, pledge of allegiance, national anthem by the Ascension Academy Choir, flyover by the Panhandle Warbird Flight, salute to the services, wreath presentation and more. Guest speaker is Sgt Major Billy R. Garcia, United States Marine Corp, retired. This years Veterans Day event sponsors include Bill and Poppy McCarty in memory of Col. CB Herndon and WA McCarty Sr.; Jerry and Janie Hensley; Bell Textron; Citizens Bank; Buffalo Herd; and Oldham County.
US Marine Corps Birthday Ball, Veterans Day Parade, WT/Canyon celebration among other events
Here are some other notable things planned in observance of the day for active and retired service members and their families.
The Amarillo Wranglers will host a Military Night for its game against the Odessa Jackalopes, 6 p.m. Friday at the Amarillo Civic Center Complex. The Wranglers will be wearing special Military Night jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game, honoring our heroes. Military Night in the Budweiser Bull Pen is presented in support from 9th Inning Brews & Bites, Andrea's Project, Rick Looby Homes, and Billy Max RV's. The first puck will drop at 7:15 p.m. All active duty military and veterans get in free with ID; get your tickets at Amarillo Ice Ranch or at the Civic Center Box Office.
U.S. Marine Corps Birthday Ball will be held Friday at Cactus Cove Inn & Suites, 2501 E. Interstate Dr. in Amarillo. The event is a celebration of the 249th birthday of the Marine Corps and also honors the family of Thomas E. Creek and those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. Doors open at 5 p.m., with a ceremony presented by Caprock Marine Corps JROTC at 6 p.m. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m. by Nine Line BBQ. Tickets are $55 per person, and a portion of the proceeds raised will be donated to the Caprock Marine Corps JROTC. An after hours party will be held 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. at Western Horseman Club. The annual Veterans Day Parade, presented by Roan-Creek Marine Corps League, takes place Saturday morning in downtown Amarillo. After check-in at 9 a.m., the parade begins its route at 10 a.m. down on Polk Street at 11th to 5th, and then it travels down Harrison. Organizers are honoring the POWs and MIAs this year with a special float. There will be a special flyovers by the West Texas Warbirds Flight. The event is free and open to the public, and the community is invited to turn out to honor all of those who have served our country.
A dinner will be held later that day at the VFW starting at 6 p.m. and is open to all military institutions, but spots are limited. Tickets are $30. For more information, call 806-433-0864.
West Texas A&M University and the city of Canyon again will join forces to commemorate Veterans Day. The joint celebration for veterans, active-duty military and Gold Star families will begin at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at the Veterans Memorial on the WT campus. The celebration will include remarks from Lt. Corey Todd Jones, an Amarillo native and deputy public affairs officer in the Office of the Secretary of the Navy. Jones’ father, Stephen Jones, is a member of the WT Alumni Association board of directors. The event also is scheduled to include a flyover provided by the 7th Bomb Wing from Dyess Air Force Base. A wreath will be laid at the memorial to commemorate members of the WT family who gave their lives in military service. Rylan Dove, a junior education major from Amarillo and U.S. Army veteran, will deliver the invocation. The Canyon High School Choir will perform the national anthem and an armed forces tribute, and the Tascosa High School Junior ROTC will present colors. Free hot dogs and Buffalo cookies also will be served.
WT currently serves nearly 600 military and veteran students, offering access to a variety of educational benefits programs for them and their dependents. WT’s Office of Military and Veterans Services also will cohost a Military Appreciation Night at the Nov. 9 WT football game in Bain-Schaeffer Buffalo Stadium. The WT Student Veterans organization will volunteer at High Plains Food Bank, as well.
Veterans Day deals, specials offered locally
Along with all the businesses that offer free meals and specials to active military and veterans are these local groups, with this latest information sent this week.
Cafe 21 at AmTech will offer free breakfast to veterans from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday. It has become an honored tradition, and once again, AmTech Career Academy will honor veterans and active-duty military men and women with the Veterans Day meal, with biscuits, gravy, and coffee on the menu. Veterans and active-duty service members should use the south entrance (No. 1) at AmTech and bring their ID.
The Don Harrington Discovery Center (DHDC) and Wildcat Bluff Discovery Center (WBDC) are offering $1 admission for all active military and veterans (with military ID) on Nov. 9 and 10. Both locations will also offer active and former service members half off their family memberships during their operating hours. The membership discount will only be applicable in person with proof of ID. Please their websites for accurate operating hours for redemption. DHDC will not be open on Nov 11, 2024.
This Veterans Day, Walk-On’s Sports Bistreaux is inviting all veterans to enjoy a free Scholarship Burger as a small token of appreciation for their service. This special offer (valued at $10–$12 depending on location), will be available all day on Monday, Nov. 11, exclusively for dine-in guests with valid ID.
From Nov. 8 to Nov. 14, Cinergy is honoring veterans by offering a special Veterans Day Combo of two fountain drinks and a large popcorn, with a portion of each purchase ($1 per combo) going to nonprofit Folds of Honor, supporting scholarships for families of fallen or disabled service members.
Scooter’s Coffee, which has two locations in Amarillo on South Western and South Georgia streets, is offering a special thank-you to veterans and active-duty military members in honor of Veterans Day. On Monday, Nov. 11, anyone with a valid Military ID is invited to stop by one of their locations to receive a free medium drink (from any of the selections offered on the menu) "as a token of thanks and showing our appreciation for their service and sacrifice." At Kohls on Veterans Day, all veterans and active-duty military will receive 30% off their in-store purchase. (Some exclusions apply. Year-round military discounts are also offered at the retail department store as part of Military Mondays, when active military, veterans, retirees and their immediate family members receive 15% off qualifying, in-store purchases.)
In appreciation this Veterans Day, Dunkin’ will offer all active and retired military a free donut. All current and former members of the military can stop by participating Dunkin’ restaurants nationwide to enjoy a free donut Monday. (One per guest, while supplies last; no ID required. Offer available in-store only and not through the app.) Since 2003, Dunkin’ has partnered with the United States Armed Forces through the Coffee for Our Troops program. Over the last two decades, Dunkin’ has donated more than 260,000 pounds of coffee to troops deployed overseas, or more than 12,000 pounds of coffee each year.
