Two incoming solar storms mean the northern lights might just put on a stunning display over Texas again this weekend. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) has issued a G3 (strong) geomagnetic storm warning for Friday and Saturday due to two powerful solar flares that erupted from the surface of the Sun on Tuesday and Wednesday. The latter was the biggest solar flare reported since 2017.
Each solar flare was accompanied by a large expulsion of plasma and a magnetic field known as a coronal mass ejection (CME). Once CMEs reach Earth—which is predicted to occur over the next three days—they can potentially cause the aurora borealis (aka the northern lights) to appear as they interact with our planet's atmosphere.
Currently, the SWPC forecasts the G3 conditions could trigger auroras as far south as Illinois and Oregon. However, it's possible the northern lights could be seen much further south than that, especially if the storm is later upgraded. In May, a very active aurora display was spotted as far south as Houston after the SWPC predicted a strong G4 geomagnetic storm would hit Earth. The event was later upgraded to an extreme G5, the strongest level of geomagnetic storm.
Conditions are also ripe for the ethereal lights to make an appearance due to the autumnal equinox, a time of the year known to produce more geomagnetic storms than other times of the year. Per Space.com, this is due to Earth's magnetosphere and the Sun's magnetic field becoming aligned as our planet orients its poles to point toward the Sun. Throughout the rest of the year, they tend to be misaligned, meaning charged particles of the Sun are slightly deflected from Earth's atmosphere. However, this deflection doesn't occur around the equinoxes, making Earth more vulnerable to geomagnetic storms.
Most recently, the northern lights put on a dazzling show in the Texas Panhandle, coinciding with the peak of the Perseid meteor shower. At the time, Earth was hit by a G2 geomagnetic storm. It's important to note that space weather is highly unpredictable, so don't be too disappointed if this weekend turns out to be a total flop.

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – As the Amarillo community welcomes autumn and prepares for Halloween, officials and organizations have planned a range of family events aimed at providing safe spaces to collect treats and spread seasonally-spooky cheer.
MyHighPlains.com has compiled a list of Halloween festivities and Trunk-or-Treat events planned around the Amarillo area, as well as tips from experts for a safe holiday.
The City of Amarillo announced it will host the “Boo at the Zoo” event at the Amarillo Zoo on Oct. 18 and Oct. 19 from 6-9 p.m., with admissions stopping at 8:30 p.m. on both days.
The event tickets will cost $10 per person, according to the city, with presale tickets available here. The “Boo at the Zoo” will feature treats, craft stations, carnival-style games, food trucks and animal enrichment events.
Trunk-or-Treat events
On Oct. 18, Tascosa High School will host its second annual Trunk or Treat event from 5 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. at Dick Bivins Stadium.
On Oct. 19, Legends Roughstock Series will host its “Bares, Broncs & Bulls Halloween Hullabaloo” at the Arena of Life beginning at 6 p.m., with $10 admission for attendees. A trunk-or-treat will be hosted in the parking lot of the event starting at 4 p.m.
On Oct. 23, Tradewind Airport will have a trunk-or-treat event running from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m., with admission priced at $5 per car. The event is set to feature food trucks, games, and a candy drop from airplanes.
On Oct. 24, River Road High School will host a trunk-or-treat event from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m., featuring prizes awarded for the best trunk and best group costume.
Starting at 10 a.m. on Oct. 26, the 2024 Sunshine for Charlotte 5k and Fun Run will begin at 1501 Streit Dr. as part of its fundraising efforts to benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Amarillo. Participants will be able to gain admission to an after-party and trunk or treat event after the run.
On Oct. 26, Amarillo Auto Group will host its annual trunk-or-treat event from 12 p.m. – 2 p.m. at 4805 S Washington St., including candy, games, a photo booth, a food truck and more.
On Oct. 26, the Amarillo Area Transgender Advocacy Group (AATAG) will host a trunk-or-treat from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. at 3001 Bell St.
On Oct. 26, Contagion Athletics announced it will host a trunk-or-treat from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m., including candy, face painting, games, a bouncy house, food trucks, a hot dog eating contest and more.
On Oct. 27, Pray Amarillo will host its Fall Festival from 3 p.m. – 6 p.m. and include a trunk-or-treat event, car show, car smash and food.
On Oct. 31, Street Volkswagen will host a trunk-or-treat event starting at 4 p.m.
On Oct. 31, South Georgia Baptist Church will host a trunk-or-treat event from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.
On Oct. 31, The Rustic Leopard Boutique will host a trunk-or-treat event from 5:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. at 2806 Duniven Circle.
On Oct. 31, Tradewind Elementary School will host a trunk-or-treat event in its parking lot from 6 p.m. – 7 p.m.
On Oct. 31, Polk Street Methodist Church will host a trunk-or-treat event featuring cotton candy, popcorn and bounce houses from 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
