PGA Tour pro Luke List is playing this week’s Sanderson Farms Championship in hopes of improving his Tour status for next year, and for the chance to capture back-to-back wins in Jackson. But the two-time Tour winner and defending champion has more important things on his mind than his career.

That’s because List and his family rode out Hurricane Helene at their home in Augusta, Ga., where the historic storm caused widespread devastation.

“We originally were flying Monday morning out of Augusta and then obviously everyone has seen the news with all the flooding and the hurricane through all the southeast,” List shared in his press conference ahead of the Sanderson Farms. “On my level I feel for all the people in Florida and South Carolina and North Carolina but directly the people of the CSRA in Augusta where I live, it’s pretty devastating really to not only see it but experience it, a place you call home. It’s really sad.”

List then detailed his experience during the hurricane, including trying to protect his young children while the powerful storm rolled through their town.

When it was all over, List was forced to team up with neighbors to remove trees from their street just so they could leave the neighborhood.

“It was wild. Just keeping [the children] safe through the storm, then waking up in the early hours and coming out when the sun was out, to see the devastation and the destruction directly on your own home and your neighbors’ homes,” List explained. “My neighbors and I cut five massive trees just so we could get out of the street. That’s humbling in its own right, just tugging trees. My neighbor had a jeep, and we were pulling big logs from the trees off the road and just doing the best we could to band together and getting a tree off a neighbor’s yard, and that’s everybody. Everyone is dealing with that in their own right.”

He continued, “In a sense it was great to see everybody come together, but in a sense it almost felt like that’s what you have to do in that moment.”

After surveying the damage, List made the decision to get his family out of town, fearing that it would be a long time before power was restored, which proved to be a good decision.

“We’re very fortunate to have been able to get out when we did. I think it came to the clear conclusion that we’re not going to have power or water for a while, which they still don’t, so just to get the family out and safe and comfortable was something I thought was important,” List said on Tuesday.

List also shared that he and fellow Tour pro Henrik Norlander, who also lives in Augusta and drove from there to Jackson for the Sanderson Farms Championship, decided to join forces to raise money for the Red Cross at this week’s tournament to help with recovery efforts.

“Henrik Norlander and I, we call that home there, we’re going to be doing a Birdies for Augusta. We’re going to donate $500 per birdie of our own golf to the Red Cross there,” List shared. “Hopefully we can get some more support locally and then from all over. I encourage anyone to donate to the Red Cross because the areas definitely need it.”

The idea was spawned during a family dinner together when they both arrived in Jackson.

“We had dinner last night with our families, and we just kind of came up with it together. I think it was something we both had in our hearts that we wanted to help support in Augusta, and this is the best way we know how right now,” List explained. “I think we were on the same page as far as we need to give back in any way we can. Obviously there’s a lot of people that are in privileged positions to give back, and I feel like that’s always kind of called upon in that, especially in hard times like that.”

Elsewhere in Augusta, Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley shared Thursday that the iconic course suffered “a lot of damage,” but assured everyone that it would be repaired and ready to go for the 2025 Masters next April.

In an interview with Golf Digest, Ridley said, “We’ve been able to take care of our employees, but we’ve also been focused on what the Red Cross and other organizations are doing in Augusta, and our employees really have been a big part of that, which I think really speaks for them and the culture at the club.”

Recovery efforts continue into their second week after Hurricane Helene devastated the Augusta area on Sept. 27.

Though thousands remain without power heading into this week, Georgia Power said that by Saturday, Oct. 5 80% of its Augusta customers had their power restored.

The Category 4 storm made landfall Sept. 26 along Florida's Big Bend coast. The Augusta area saw isolated tornadoes and hurricane-force wind gusts exceeding 80 mph, downing trees and powerlines.

Below is the latest information on Hurricane Helene recovery efforts in Augusta and east Georgia. The Augusta Chronicle staff will update regularly.

7:15 a.m. Sunday − Many communities surrounding Augusta still without power

Many residents in communities surrounding Augusta remain without power as the area heads into its second week of recovery efforts from Hurricane Helene.

“It’s going to be a multiple-week-long process,” Wayne Gossage Jr., president of Jefferson Energy Cooperative, last week said of efforts to restore power in more rural areas. “I was here during the ice storm of 2014 and I never thought we’d see anything close to that, but this is much worse for multiple reasons. The transmission that’s out, the damage to our distribution system is going to take time to repair. The ice storm was isolated more or less, but this is all over.”

5 a.m. Sunday − A time of giving: United Way, GoFundMe raising money for Augusta

United Way of the Central Savannah River Area, its 211 Helpline and the crowdsourced internet charity site GoFundMe.org are collectively raising funds for families harmed by damage from Hurricane Helene.The fund will offer unrestricted cash grants of $200 to help people pay for food, water, clothing, diapers and other critical supplies. "Additional grants will become available as new funds are raised through this impactful partnership," according to Madison Jones, a communications manager with GoFundMe.United Way CSRA’s 2-1-1 is helping to identify grantees, and GoFundMe.org will issue the grants. GoFundMe has made an initial $50,000 contribution to begin immediately helping 250 people in Augusta.Tax-deductible donations also will be granted to support those in need.

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger says his office is continuing to coordinate directly with election offices in Georgia’s 159 counties ensuring election operations remain on schedule and that counties have the needed resources for a swift recovery from Hurricane Helene.

Raffensperger says the physical infrastructure needed to conduct an election will be fully operational before the early in-person voting period begins.

“Election workers across Georgia had begun the pre-election testing processes of equipment and facilities to be used in the 2024 election,” said Raffensperger. “My office is working hard to make sure the election workers in the affected counties are safe, that their equipment is undamaged and secure, and that their early voting locations will be functional by the time early voting starts.”

Poor road conditions and ongoing power outages were scattered across the southern, central and eastern portions of Georgia as of Wednesday, which was slowing evaluation procedures in some areas hardest hit by the storm, which roared ashore in Florida as a strong Category 4 hurricane in Florida before moving swiftly into Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.

“Georgia’s Emergency Management Agency, linemen from Georgia Power and other utilities, all the state and local first responders and legions of citizen volunteers and faith-based organizations are doing a great job at getting people fed, housed, and back on their feet,” said Raffensperger. “But this was a massive and deadly storm and recovery is likely to take a while. We applaud Governor Kemp for prioritizing the response.”

Raffensperger added that any counties having to relocate early voting locations will notify voters through the My Voter Page portal and local radio, television, and social media outlets.

“We have to let the first responders finish doing their jobs, but as power is restored and voting locations can be assessed, we will make sure that the upcoming election is safe, secure and convenient for all Georgia voters,” he said.

Georgians will have three weeks of in person early voting as well as election day to cast their vote. Any voter whose absentee ballot has not been accepted by the county elections office may still vote in person.

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WFXG) - Augusta Utilities released an update to the city's boil water advisory Thursday, confirming that the Municipal Building and Blythe Recreation Center are no longer serving as water distribution sites.

The advisory is being issued out of an abundance of caution, as systemwide low pressures leave the potential of a health hazard due to microbial contamination.

Potable water sites include Diamond Lakes on Windsor Spring Road, McBean Community Center on Hephzibah-McBean Road, Blythe City Hall on Church Street, Warren Baptist on Washington Road, Aquatic Center on Damascus Road, Southgate Plaza on Gordon Highway and The Depot on Reynolds Street. Residents can bring a container to these locations to fill up.

The city will hand out bottled water at The Depot, Diamond Lakes and Southgate Plaza.

The city of Augusta has created a database for residents to check if their street remains under a boil water advisory alert.

As of 11 a.m. on Tuesday Oct. 1, all streets in Augusta-Richmond County have been required to boil their water. Click here to access the database in regards to your street.

To properly boil tap water for use, customers should heat the water until bubbles come quickly from the bottom of the container, continue heating for a minute once the water boils, then allow it to cool.

The advisory is in effect until Augusta Utilities has done the appropriate testing. Once the advisory is lifted, you should flush all faucets for a minimum of two minutes before using for drinking or food preparation.

AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. (WFXG) – A fire has destroyed a tire shop in Aiken County.

The fire broke out around 2:30 p.m. at McKinney Tire Service on York Street, sending thick, black smoke into the sky.

Three workers were in the shop at the time, and one was injured. That worker was taken to the hospital, but the extent of his injuries are unknown at this time.

Fire officials at the scene said they were removing walls and the roof of the building to get foam on to the tires that were burning inside.

The cause of the fire is not known at this time. Stay with WFXG FOX54 for the latest information.

Hurricane Helene left a trail of destruction and flooding in its wake, scouring a broad path through the Southeast and leaving a death toll that has climbed as emergency teams reach areas cut off by the storm.

Many of Helene’s effects are individual and heartbreaking, such as the loss of children and grandparents, homes and businesses. But the storm also wrecked whole towns and communities, and its wider impact is so outsized that it’s clearly visible from space.

Satellite photos shared by NASA and NOAA show the fast-moving hurricane carved a dark corridor into the Southeast as its center roared inland, plunging cities and entire areas into blackouts.

In one striking set of images, Augusta, Ga., is seen going from a glowing metropolis to a largely blacked-out city, with the largest cluster of working lights centered on its downtown along the Savannah River.

The NASA Earth Observatory images use data from the Black Marble Project, which filters out reflected or distorted light.

When Helene made landfall as a Category 4 storm near Perry, Fla., late on the night of Sept. 26, the system rushed inland at speeds topping 30 mph, inflicting the perils of a barely diminished tropical storm on areas far from the coast. Making matters worse, many of those interior, elevated areas were already water-logged from rains earlier in the week.

More than a week after landfall, utility crews who rushed from near and far to turn lights and power back on have restored electricity to millions of people, but some areas are still waiting for help.

As of 10:30 a.m. ET Friday — more than a week after landfall — nearly 735,000 electricity accounts were still without power across five states, according to Poweroutage.us: South Carolina (273,913), North Carolina (230,448), Georgia (203,111), Florida (13,794), and Virginia (13,191).

Helene also changed the way the water looks in the Gulf of Mexico, along Florida’s Big Bend area and much of its Gulf coastline. Three days after landfall, the effects were still dramatically visible, in waters that went from mainly clear to light blue, brown and green.

“Helene’s winds and waves churned up sediment from the seafloor along shallow coastal areas,” according to the NASA Earth Observatory. “Light reflects from these fine particles and makes the water appear bright blue. Storm surge, flooded rivers, and flash floods produced runoff that eroded land surfaces and carried even more particles into the ocean, adding to the color.”

The agency says the wide ribbon of brown and green colors along the coastline is likely from dissolved organic materials.

“The region’s blackwater rivers, for example, are rich with decaying vegetation and other organic matter, and their stained water can become flushed into the ocean during heavy rains,” the NASA Earth Observatory says.
