Austin, TX (November 21, 2024) – Emergency crews responded to a vehicle collision with injuries in the East Cesar Chavez neighborhood of Austin. The crash occurred at the intersection of N IH 35 Svrd Nb and E 6th St, leading to injuries and temporary traffic disruptions in the area.

First responders, including paramedics and Austin Fire Department crews, were quick to arrive at the scene to assist those injured in the crash. Medics treated individuals suffering from a variety of injuries and transported them to local hospitals for further evaluation. David Paschall passed away peacefully at his home in Lago Vista, Texas, with his family by his side on November 18. He was 79 years old. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ratliffe and Velna Gray Paschall and brother, Douglas Paschall. He leaves his wife, Sandra Paschall and sons, Justin and Hunter Paschall; his brother, Martin Paschall and wife, Rita Paschall; his stepmother, Jean Paschall, and step sister, Mary Anne Bennett Horne. He also leaves several beloved in-laws, and nieces and nephews.

David Pashall was a scholar and athlete throughout his school years. He was valedictorian of his senior class at McKenzie High School, in McKenzie, Tennessee, and he graduated cum laude from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, where he majored in Political Science. David played Varsity football, basketball and baseball in high school and college. He was never one to sit on the sidelines. He worked in Admissions in Sewanee a while before marrying Sandra Bell, from Decherd, Tennessee, in 1970. He coached and taught at Savannah high school, in Savannah, Tennessee, for two years, and then went on to Marion Institute, in Marion, Alabama,for two more years.

In the summer of 1973, David moved with his wife and son, Justin, to live on that beautiful hill west of Austin, Texas, where he took the position as Director of Athletics at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School. His second son, Hunter, was born their first year at St. Stephen’s.

St. Stephen’s was a natural fit for David. He came from an academic environment where both parents taught in public schools. In his early years at St. Stephen’s, David was Director of Athletics and coach of football, basketball and baseball. He was also a dorm master, advisor, and a member of the history department faculty. He worked tirelessly to improve all of the playing fields, and one would often see him on a tractor in the middle of a field. David enjoyed sports and coaching. He believed that all students should have the opportunity to participate in sports, no matter their level of ability. He understood the body/mind connection that played an important role in a student’s development. This was one of the great things about St. Stephen’s...the non- exclusivity of team sports. He loved the intricacies of a game and seeing his players perform to the best of their abilities. in the dorm and around campus, he liked bantering with students, exchanging ideas, telling stories, and laughing at jokes. He was well known around campus for his folksy sayings and generous smile. He had an extraordinary memory for names and faces. He even could remember the names of most students’ home towns. David was deeply involved in community life - coaching, teaching, interacting with students and faculty families living on campus. Friends and students remember his unfailing kindness and willingness to help with any problem at any time, day or night. He was a wonderful father and would often be seen around campus with his sons tagging along beside him. He loved music, and he and Sandra often would go into Austin to enjoy the music scene. David was also a voracious reader of history books. He could almost recite the whole U. S. Constitution.

A member of the faculty once wrote, “David possessed a unique understanding of the complementary relationship between athletics and intellectual life in a school like St. Stephen’s. David’s leadership plays a key role in the fulfillment of the founding vision of this community”. An Alum wrote “One of the biggest blessings of my life was having Coach Paschall as a teacher and mentor”.

When the new Clayton gymnasium was completed it was dedicated to David, and his signature is copied in bold letters on the gym floor.

In 1998, David won the St. Stephen’s Teacher of the Year Award for Excellence in the classroom.

David retired from St. Stephen’s in 2009.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The stars will be out in the southern sky! For the first time in program history, North Dakota hockey will head to the state of Texas to host the 2026 U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game from the H-E-B Center at Cedar Park in Austin, Texas.

North Dakota will battle Michigan State on Saturday, Oct. 31, 2026 at 7:07 p.m. in the event, matching up two of the winningest programs in college hockey history.

"The U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game in Austin is the type of event that we want to have both our student-athletes and fans experience," said UND Athletics Director Bill Chaves. "We are excited to have the opportunity that showcases our university, hockey program and student-athletes deep in the heart of Texas. We cannot wait for our kelly green to takeover Austin."

This will be the 105th all-time meeting between North Dakota and Michigan State, with UND holding a 64-37-3 all-time record in the series. The teams have only played four times in the last decade, with the Fighting Hawks recording a sweep in Nov. 2015 at Munn Arena and the Spartans grabbing a win and tie at Ralph Engelstad Arena the following season.

"We're looking forward to hosting a premier college hockey event that will provide an unmatched life experience for our student-athletes and offers our fans an exciting destination game weekend," said UND head coach Brad Berry. "The game, featuring two premiere college hockey programs promises to be an outstanding game. We are excited about playing a very good Michigan State team in the "Live Music Capital of the World."

North Dakota is no stranger to competing in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game, with the 2026 event serving as the 12th time UND will play in the event since it began being counted as a regular season contest. The Fighting Hawks are 8-3-0 in the previous 11 iterations of the game, including a 4-1 win last month over Providence in the 2024 game from the Ralph as well as a 6-0 victory over Michigan State in the 2007 game in Grand Forks.

UND has also enjoyed putting on some miles when hosting destination games, with previous spots including Winnipeg, Vancouver, New York City, Las Vegas and Nashville.
