Publix to debut another Charlotte area store as part of grocer’s expansion plan

Publix Super Market is expanding again in the Charlotte region, with plans to open its 23rd store this month.
The more than 48,000-square-foot grocery store will debut at 7 a.m. Oct. 23 at 1254 Coddle Creek Highway in Mooresville, Publix said Monday in a news release. The store will hire about 140 full- and part-time employees.
The Lakeland, Florida, grocery chain joins a heated $10.2 billion competition in the Charlotte market, according to sales tracking firm Chain Store Guide.
Publix will anchor the 15-acre Harris Farms Shopping Center, which also includes 11,800-square-foot space for retail and three outparcels, according to developer Cambridge Properties’ website. McDonald’s has leased one of the outparcels, site plans show.
A dentist and a nail salon also signed leases in the retail village, The Charlotte Observer previously reported.
The retail shopping center is part of a 136-acre mixed-use development. Plans also include 165 single-family homes, 168 town homes and 382 apartment units, according to Cambridge. The first phases of single-family and townhome residences will be available mid-2025.
The Mooresville store is Publix’s latest expansion after last year’s store opening in North Creek Village at 15010 Village Crossing Road in Huntersville.
Publix opened its first North Carolina store in Ballantyne in early 2014. The Florida-based grocer, is planning to open at least five more stores:
▪ A 55,000-square-foot store with a drive-thru and a proposed private drive at 11525 Carmel Commons is expected to open early next year.
▪ Construction for The Arboretum store at Providence and Pineville-Matthews roads will start by the end of this year or early next year.
▪ A 28,000-square-foot store at the 10 Tryon building on the northwest corner of Tryon and Ninth streets in uptown.
▪ Clear Creek Crossings development on the corner of Albemarle and Rocky River Church roads
▪ A 68,000-square-foot store at the corner of Sharon and Colony roads in South Park.
There are 745 grocery stores in the region, up from 722 in 2020, according to Chain Store Guide.
Publix competes with Walmart and other North Carolina chains including Matthews-based Harris Teeter, Salisbury-based Food Lion, Asheville-based Earth Fare and Winston-Salem based Lowes Foods.
Other grocery stores’ plans include:
▪ Sprouts Farmers Market will open a 21,000-square-foot store next summer at the One NoDa Park development on the corner of 36th and Tryon streets, The Charlotte Observer reported. It will be the third location for the Phoenix-based grocer, which opened a store in Steele Creek last fall and has a store in Ballantyne.
▪ Matthews Board of Commissioners recently approved changes to a grocery store plan with signage in an illustration that looks similar to Trader Joe’s. Town officials and the developer, as well as Trader Joe’s, would not confirm which grocer plans to move into the 13,5000-square-foot stand-alone building at Matthews Gateway on East John Street.
▪ In May, Mecklenburg County commissioners approved $1.5 million for California-based grocer Spangler’s to build a 8,000-square-foot store at Kohler and Statesville avenues, north of uptown.
▪ Rochester, N.Y.-based Wegmans will make its Charlotte debut in 2026 with a 110,000-square-foot grocery store on the east side of Ballantyne in south Charlotte.
▪ The West Boulevard Coalition will open Charlotte’s first cooperative grocery store, Three Sisters Market, next year. The full-service grocery store will debut in an area that’s been without a traditional supermarket for over 30 years.

At least that’s the official estimate the city gave the N.C. Department of Environmental Quality.
The real amount of waste was likely much bigger, said Rusty Rozzelle, water quality program manager for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services, a partnership between the city and county that oversees drainage and water quality.
The county’s drinking water supply is safe. But the environment took a hit, and it will take some weeks to assess the toll, Rozzelle said.
And it is not just what leaked into the Catawba locally that Charlotte-area residents should be aware of, he said. They’ll also have to grapple with any impacts from the debris, sewage and other contamination that washed into the river upstream, as far west as the Appalachian Mountains, that will eventually float to Charlotte.
“This is by far and away the most devastation our waterways have experienced in modern history — both from a water quality and water quantity perspective,” Rozzelle said.
When untreated sewage reaches a waterbody, bacteria, viruses, parasites, molds and fungi are released. Wading, swimming or ingesting contaminated water could lead to stomach cramps and diarrhea or even life-threatening ailments such as cholera and hepatitis, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
Bacterial levels are usually highest immediately after contamination and when the rivers are running the fastest, said Mike O’Driscoll, a hydrologist and professor at East Carolina University.
The extra water dilutes the pollutants, he said, but some contaminants, such as nutrients and heavy metals, could be in the water for months.
More than 1 million gallons of sewage leaked from collection systems within the North Carolina portion of the Catawba River basin, The Observer data analysis shows.
Northeast of Charlotte, some 309,000 gallons spilled from the Newton Collection System. Ninety-two thousand gallons spilled across the Catawba River in Gaston County. Sewage flowed into the Catawba River basin upstream from Mecklenburg and at three Charlotte Water Collection System locations after Helene roared across the Carolinas, state records show.
Mecklenburg County’s largest untreated discharge was more than 224,000 gallons into Lake Wylie, with no specific utility facility identified in the data. Another 11,000 gallons flowed into Sugar Creek, which runs through the center of the city, and 1,500 gallons into Campbell Creek, on the city’s west side, according to DEQ estimates.
Downstream from Mecklenburg County, Helene caused nearly 500,000 gallons of raw sewage to spill into Rock Hill, S.C. area waterways.
The exact cause of allsvpills is unclear. When it comes to Charlotte Water, the public utility, floating debris can run into and break wastewater pipes that span creeks. Lift stations, pumping systems that move wastewater from lower elevations to higher ones, can overflow. And erosion can undermine underground pipes, said Cam Cooley, a utility spokesperson.
For those not linked to the utility, an influx of water can cause septic tank waste to back up into homes or leach into the soil, said O’Driscoll of East Carolina University.
Rozzelle said it would be two or three weeks before local officials even test water along the Catawba River. There is no need to test it now, he said. Officials know bacteria counts are “really high.”
The Charlotte area has weathered much larger sewage spills than the at least 236,000 gallons reported to have escaped during Helene, a Charlotte Observer analysis of state data found.
Charlotte’s largest sewage leak happened in 2018 when heavy rains caused 15 million gallons to leak into Long Creek off Oakdale Road, northwest of uptown, The Observer found. That same year, another 2.6 million gallons flowed into Taggard Creek, east of Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
But what makes Helene’s toll on the river so terrible was all the contamination between the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains in McDowell County, where the river starts, and here, Rozzelle said.
Much of that pollution will eventually make its way to Charlotte.
“There may have been larger spills in this county, but I think you have to look at everything upstream,” he said.
Nancy Hiemstra’s home overlooks Mountain Island Lake, where some of the area’s worst flooding happened. She knows something changed after Helene. The lake smells, she said, and she’s seen a film on its surface.
Since the storm, Hiemsrta, who is on city water, has filtered and boiled it before drinking, she told The Observer. Her home sits downstream of a number of spills, including the 309,000 gallons that spilled in Newton.
Treating water piped to homes by Charlotte Water is not necessary, Rozzelle said. The city is purifying that drinking water and, he stressed, it is safe to drink.
But the Catawba River is contaminated with sewage and other pollutants, Rozzelle acknowledged. In addition to sewage, manufacturing chemicals, gasoline, oil and heavy metals, some of which are carcinogenic, and even human remains were likely washed into it, he said.
The contamination shouldn’t prevent residents from rebuilding. But it should prevent them from going into the water for now, he said.
“I would not be surprised if anything is floating in the water right now,” Rozzelle said. “Some seen. Some unseen.”

A North Carolina restaurant serves the best pasta in the state — including a beloved dish, new rankings show.
Little Mama’s in Charlotte ranks No. 1 on a list of top places to eat the Italian staple, according to results published Oct. 1 from Yelp.
To create the list, the review website said it studied pasta restaurants in each state. It “ranked those spots based on the volume and ratings of reviews” left over time from Elite users, those who are active on the platform.
“Ah, pasta! Is there anything cozier than diving into a warm, cheesy bowl of cacio e pepe, swirling up some spaghetti and meatballs, or sinking our forks into a towering plate of lasagna?” Yelp wrote in its report. “We love you in all your cheesy forms, topped with all of your delicious sauces.”
Little Mama’s reigned supreme in North Carolina as Yelp called penne alla vodka its “most popular pasta dish.” The restaurant’s version includes “sautéed pork pancetta in a pepper vodka, spicy tomato cream sauce.”
On Yelp, some customers raved about the spice level of the restaurant’s sauce. Others were fans of pastas ranging from lasagna to ravioli.
Little Mama’s has two Charlotte locations, including one that launched earlier this year, CharlotteFive reported. But it was the other eatery on Sharon Road in SouthPark that got the nod.
“A full bar, sun room and dining room give you a variety of spaces to enjoy yourself and have a leisurely time with a cold beverage and some food like your grandmother used to make,” the restaurant wrote on its website. “Inspired by the 1960s and 70s Italian restaurants of his youth, Frank Scibelli opened Little Mama’s in 2020.”
In addition to pasta, Little Mama’s has a mozzarella bar and serves fan favorites such as eggplant parmesan. The restaurant also earned praise for its atmosphere and service, helping it reach 4.4 out of 5 stars on Yelp.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - A monumental concert featuring some of country music’s biggest names is coming to Charlotte later this month, with all proceeds to support Helene relief efforts in North Carolina and across the southeast.
North Carolina natives Luke Combs and Eric Church will headline the show, called “Concert for Carolina.” Billy Strings and James Taylor will join the two former Appalachian State students.
The concert is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 26 at Bank of America Stadium. Tickets go on sale Thursday, Oct. 10 at 10 a.m., and can be purchased here.
All proceeds, including sponsorships, will be split between Church’s Chief Cares Foundation, and four charities chosen by Combs. Among Combs’ chosen charities are Samaritan’s Purse, Manna Food Bank and Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC.

Plans for Concert for Carolina were announced 10 days after Combs posted that he was planning “something really special” to help his home state.
“I told y’all I had something big planned for Carolina,” he said in a separate post Monday morning. “This concert took so much planning, work, and coordination from so many people. I’m so thankful to everyone who helped make this a possibility on such short notice.”
Panthers owners David and Nicole Tepper offered the stadium for the concert, in addition to making an initial $3 million commitment to support relief efforts.
“When Luke first approached us with the idea for a concert benefitting relief efforts in the region, we felt compelled to open the doors of Bank of America Stadium for this special moment,” the Teppers said in a statement. “Every day, we are more inspired by the strength and resolve of our Carolina community, and we are grateful to join Luke, Eric, and our fellow Carolinians as we embark on the road to recovery together.”
This past Friday, Oct. 4, Church made his own significant contribution to relief efforts when he signed the publishing rights away to his new song, “Darkest Hour,” allowing royalties from the song to also help North Carolina recover from the storm.
