CORPUS CHRISTI, Tx — Patty Lichtenberger said she got the call of what turned out to be a positive breast cancer diagnosis on July 14, 2022.

“I don’t want anybody to have a story like this. I wish that it stopped with me. I wish no one else was diagnosed after me," Patty emotionally expressed during her interview with neighborhood news reporter Alexis Scott.

According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, more than 20,000 women are expected to be diagnosed with Breast Cancer in Texas by the end of 2024. It's the most commonly diagnosed disease among women across the state.

Even though Patty encouraged other women to get their annual checkups, she was not doing it for herself, and that’s when everything changed.

“I was six months later getting my exam done. Even though I work here at Radiology Associates(RA), I could have just gone downstairs to get it done, but I didn't. We always put ourselves last," Patty added.

By the time she found out about her diagnosis, she was already at stage 3. Patty began treatment —getting chemotherapy, radiation, and even a double mastectomy.

With three daughters, she emphasized her need to fight against the disease and said they motivated her through the journey.

“It was my faith and staying strong for my girls. Cancer is a big scary word. So, there’s no excuse not to get this done. Early detection is the key," Patty mentioned.

Jeannie Anthony has also encouraged women to see their doctors. She works with Patty at RA and hopes more women will become proactive about their health.

Her team processes more than 40,000 mammogram screenings a year and utilizes 3D mammography. The technology her office uses is the only one of its kind in the Coastal Bend.

“The technology allows us to see stage 0, which is the smallest, like the tip of a pen," Jeannie said, "Look at yourself in the mirror, know your body, do your self exams because the likelihood of you finding something before your health provider is better.”

Jeannie said many women in the Coastal Bend have a hard time getting annual mammograms because they are not insured. However, there are opportunities and resources that could help them, including an upcoming free mammogram drive. It will be hosted by Radiology Associates, First Friday, andSouth Texas Family Planning.

As one of the supporting organizers for the event, First Friday is a local non-profit was founded in the 90s. Its mission is to raise awareness for breast cancer, detection, education and community outreach. The organization also provides free mammograms to women in need across the region.

Doctors have encouraged women to begin annual checkups before the age of 40 and continue through age 64. Now, that age is a lot earlier as some breast cancer patients have been diagnosed in their 20s.

“So many women take care of everyone else and neglect themselves. So we really just try to preach the importance of trying to take care of yourself," Jeannie added.

The free mammogram event will be held on Saturday, October 12, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Radiology Associates Six Points, 1812 S. Alameda.

The event will offer private breast cancer exams and free mammogram screenings. You must be between the ages of 35-64, have no insurance or be uninsured, and have no prior symptoms or health issues.

The event is first come, first served.

As Milton moves away from Texas, waves will travel across the Gulf of Mexico and elevate the rip current risk in Corpus Christi.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Rip currents and high surf are responsible for 15% of tropical cyclone-related fatalities over the last ten years. This comes second to inland flooding and rainfall, and recently caused more deaths than storm surge.

The problem with rip currents is they are difficult to spot. Additionally, this danger can be amplified hundreds of miles away from a storm.

Similar to Helene, Hurricane Milton has also increased the rip risk in Corpus Christi through Friday morning. A Weather Impact Alert has been issued for the dangerous rip currents and minor coastal flooding.

Swimming can quickly become dangerous, so the buddy system should be used. Talk to a lifeguard and check the conditions before getting in the water.

Rip currents form as a way to return water that crashes onto the beach back out to sea. Longer periods and larger waves will cause more water to rush onto the beach. The longer period allows for cleaner surf but also allows for a stronger rip current to form.

Wave heights will mostly be 3-5 feet locally, but a few head-high plus sets may roll through the area now that Milton reached Cat 5 just over 500 miles off our coastline. The wave period is what really elevates the rip current risk as it will be 8-11 seconds through Friday morning.

Minor coastal flooding will mostly impact gulf-facing beaches around high tide. Traveling, parking, and camping on the beach may be hazardous with water rushing up to the dunes, especially with the larger waves.

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX— The City of Corpus Christi Inner Harbor Desalination Project is a step closer to becoming a reality with the selection of a finalist for the design-build firm.

On October 2nd, the Evaluation Committee completed its review of the three City Council-approved proposers and selected Kiewit Infrastructure South Co. as the top scoring proposer for delivery of the 30 million gallon per day Inner Harbor Seawater Desalination Treatment Plant Project. Kiewit Infrastructure South Co., based in Westlake, Texas, was created by Kiewit Corporation in 1969 for the delivery of complex water/wastewater treatment projects. Kiewit Corporation is a privately held United States construction company based in Omaha, Nebraska, founded in 1884. As the Number 2 ranked organization on Engineering News Report’s Top 400 Contractors by construction revenue, it is one of the largest construction and engineering organizations in North America. Locally, Kiewit employs over 1,600 personnel at their 400-acre fabrication and laydown yard in Ingleside, Texas.

The table below reflects the ranking of the five-member evaluation committee, from first to third, with additional information below on the merits of the preferred proposer. The evaluation committee complied with Texas Government Code Chapter 2269’s requirements for a best value selection (combination of price, qualifications, experience, and approach).

All three teams were determined to be qualified to deliver the project and presented compelling approaches based on their strengths, as demonstrated in their written proposals and interviews. Key attributes of the top-scoring proposer’s team include:

Given that all three teams are qualified and can deliver the project, the ranking process establishes the order for negotiations. In accordance with Texas Government Code Chapter 2269, the City will commence negotiations with the top-scoring proposer, Kiewit Infrastructure South Co. If the City is unable to reach an agreement with Kiewit Infrastructure South Co., the City will terminate negotiations in writing and commence negotiations with the next highest ranked proposer. This process will continue until a contract is reached. A notice to proceed is anticipated in early December 2024.

City Council approved the procurement of a design-builder for the Project at its January 25, 2024, meeting. City Council also accepted the SWIFT (State Water Implementation Fund for Texas) II loan for continued project planning and design and approved the submission of an application for SWIFT III for the balance of the project for design and construction at this meeting. On June 25, 2024, City Council passed a resolution approving the short-list of proposers and authorizing the execution of a contract with the top scoring proposer. No further City Council action is anticipated before the execution of the guaranteed maximum price for construction of the project, estimated to be in late 2025.

All three firms have been contacted regarding the evaluation committee’s determination. This same information is being shared with federal, state, and local partners. CCW will continue to provide updates as we move through the negotiation and contract finalization process.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — If you’re familiar with the monthly Art Walk in Downtown Corpus Christi, you already know it’s a hotspot for unique masterpieces on the first Friday of every month. But have you heard about Music Walk?

The second annual Music Walk is set to take place this weekend, running in conjunction with Art Walk. Local musicians will take center stage on Friday and Saturday, offering an eclectic mix of genres and performances.

Music Walk, will showcase 60 local musicians performing across 10 outdoor stages and 7 indoor venues, alongside the regular Art Walk festivities, including pop-up shops, food trucks, and other immersive cultural experiences. Visit Corpus Christi and the Downtown Management District have teamed up to highlight these local talents. The event is now part of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islander Family Weekend.

Lydia Garza, the Film and Music Commissioner for Visit Corpus Christi said,"You’ve got everything from hip hop to country. It’s just so cool to see artists all meshed together. I love the diversity of it all."

Garza encourages locals and visitors alike to come downtown, not only to enjoy the music but also to support local businesses.

"Eating at the restaurants, going down to the venues, and heading out to the bars is supporting our local businesses. We’re supporting the local artists performing on those stages. So it all brings money back into our community so we can continue having events like this."

Officials said those who will be impacted are those who import products through the Port of Houston and other affected ports.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Thousands of workers from 14 different ports along the East Coast and in Houston have gone on strike demanding higher wages and protections from automation.

This has many across the nation worried about access to certain goods.

As many prepare for the unknown, officials at the Port of Corpus Christi say little to no impacts will be seen in our area.

"The ports that will be most affected, it is primarily on the East Coast and then parts of the southeast, so, Houston large impact, but here in Corpus Christi and then even the Port of Brownsville will not have extensive impacts at this time," Corpus Christi Regional Economic Development Corporation COO Sarah Tindall said.

Much of that, has to do with what exactly gets imported through the Corpus Christi port.

"Our port primarily imports and exports oil and gas including LNG, liquified natural gas, so those commodities are not impacted by this port strike," she said.

However, there are some individuals that may see a slight change depending on one's choice of transportation.

"The impacts that would happen here would be for folks who work here, have companies here, who are importing through the Port of Houston or some of the other affected ports, so people who get products in through Houston, and then ship them here by rail or send them here by truck, will have impacts," Tindall said.

Communication is key in situations like this, which is why the Port of Corpus Christi Chief of External Affairs Officer Omar Garcia said they have been in regular communication with their port customers, and do not expect disruptions to their operations.

But that story is different on the national scale.

"Everyday, it is estimated that the loss in the national economy is several billions of dollars, so both parties are very motivated and invested in solving this dispute rather quickly," research economist from TAMU-CC Dr. Deniz Gevrek said.

She said retailers and importers have made preparations prior to the looming strike in attempt to get ahead.

"Retailers serving our region and nation, are sophisticated enough and they are well equipped with the resources to handle any supply chain disruptions that would affect our economy," Gevrek said. "They are very well equipped, they were expecting this disruption."
