EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Saturday, Oct. 5 marked the 13th annual Rocking the Rez Pow Wow at the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo (YDSP).
Spearheaded by the Tiguas, Rocking the Rez spans back 15 years, having only had to pause twice during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The event continues Sunday.
“Here’s your chance to experience Native American culture. My pueblo has been here in El Paso over 300 years, and all we want to do is share our culture to everybody and see how beautiful it is. Come here; experience that. For my community, my Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo and all the native people here, nothing but blessings to each and every one of you,” said Rafael Gomez, a tribal councilman for Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo.
A powwow is a Native American celebration in which tribes gather to express their indigenous heritage through dancing, singing, food and crafts, and by wearing distinct regalia.
This year’s Rocking the Rez Pow Wow program involved a gourd dance, the grand entry, and dancing competitions of multiple categories. All of which are vibrant displays of Native American culture.
Gomez said that their powwow has grown so much that they see people come from tribes across the country, but mainly in the Southwest region, such as Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Oklahoma.
Edd Scott, in particular, is a resident from Point of Pines, Arizona and said he has been coming to Rocking the Rez since it began 15 years ago.
“I enjoy coming here and seeing all my good and old friends. I have made a lot of friends here through the competitions,” Scott said.
Scott has roots with the Ute Indian Tribe which has its origins in Utah, Colorado, and northern New Mexico, but during the powwow he performs the grass dance, which originated in the Northern Great Plains.
“I started dancing when I was 8-9 years old. I went up north and this family gave the (grass dance) to me, and what I’m wearing right now is a gift to me. It’s a healing gift,” Scott said.
On top of the visual spectacle of the dances, Rocking the Rez hosts over 50 vendors of Native American crafts, a food court, a playground for kids, and even a skate competition led by professional skaters.

El Paso, TX — Sam Houston enters its bye week one win close to bowl eligibility and its best start since the 2021 season.
The Bearkats went into El Paso on a short week and, despite a slow start, finished the game with a 41-21 win over UTEP (0-5, 0-2 CUSA). The Bearkats now sit at 5-1 and head into a much needed bye-week after six weeks of play.
While Sam Houston (5-1, 2-0 CUSA) compiled 519 yards of total offense, but it didn’t start that way.
The Bearkats offense struggled at times to get things going. After moving the ball right down the field on the opening drive, things stalled. Over the course of the next five drives, Sam Houston had a turnover on downs and four punts to give the Miners the ball.
During that stretch, Sam Houston had 35 yards before finding the endzone. Things stayed the same for the Bearkats for much of the game. Sam Houston relied on the legs of Hunter Watson, DJ McKinney and Jay Ducker.
Ducker capped off the Bearkats opening drive with a 39-yard rush to the endzone that made it look like it was going to be all Bearkats, all game. But in Ducker’s next four runs, he was held to seven yards. McKinney, who Keeler described as half pit bull and half chihuahua, matched Ducker with 46 first-half yards and a score.
Through the air, Sam Houston saw some sparks. Watson flung the ball for 123 first-half yards going 12-21. Only one of his passes was considered a drop and UTEP batted away an additional three.
UTEP tried to charge after the Bearkats’ turnover on downs. With the sudden change, the Miners tried to catch Sam Houston napping. It didn’t work. UTEP receiver Trey Goodman was intercepted by Caleb Weaver, immediately ending the Miners’ momentum. It was Weaver’s third interception this season.
Sam Houston held the Miners for most of the first half, while they didn’t do themselves any favors. UTEP turned to Cade McConnell under center and he was giving them a chance. But the Miners were credited with four first-half drops where most of them could have converted first downs.
UTEP had 70 total yards after the first 30 minutes of play. The Miners finished with
McConnell came out in the second half firing through. While UTEP faced a three-and-out, it started to click on the second drive. McConnell found Kenny Odom for a 49-yard gain that put the Miners in the red zone for the first time in the game.
Despite having their backs against the wall, Sam Houston’s defense stood up and forced a fumble to flip the possession arrow.
But ultimately, the Bearkats were too much for the Miners. Sam Houston piled on 21 third-quarter points to break the game open. Two of those scores came from touchdown passes and a 59-yard rush from McKinney.
As a team, Sam Houston piled on 519 yards of offense with the bulk of it coming on the ground. McKinney led the Bearkats with 138 yards on the ground and two scores. It was a breakout night for him as his previous best was 58 yards against New Mexico State.
While Sam Houston’s ground game has been the difference, Watson’s game through the air was stellar. Watson completed 19 of his 19 attempts and finished the game with 224 yards and two scores.
This was the first time Watson threw for 200-plus yards since the opening game against Rice.
WHAT’S WORKING
Sam Houston is chugging along with full steam ahead at this point. They have won eight of the last 10 games they played and have lined themselves up to win Conference USA in their second year.
The Bearkats offense is multi-dimensional with the run game, quarterback run game and passing game which is going to be needed down the stretch. Not to mention, their defense is strong enough to hold teams down.
UTEP finished with a total of 323 yards, but most of that came on four plays as the Miners got past the Sam Houston secondary for 152 yards.
WHAT NEEDS HELP
There isn’t much that Sam Houston needs to look at after their win. The Bearkats secondary was beaten on four plays. The Miners had a 52-yard touchdown from McConnell and a 49-yard gain.
WHERE THEY STAND
As of Thursday night, Sam Houston is tied with Texas, Miami, Indiana, BYU and Duke with five wins. The Kats are 2-0 in CUSA play and tied with Liberty, WKU and FIU with a perfect record in conference play.
But after starting last season 0-8, this turnaround has been something special and the Bearkats need one more win in six tries to become bowl-eligible for the first time.
WHAT’S NEXT
Now, the Bearkats head into a bye week after playing six straight weekends. When the Bearkats return, they will host Western Kentucky in a Wednesday night showdown at Bowers Stadium. Sam Houston plays three more midweek games before getting their second bye.

McDonald's gave superfan and internet star Kai Cenat the duty of tasting the new menu item, promising his unfiltered reactions.

"Follow along on McDonald’s social channels all month long to find out when Kai and his friends will be going live and giving their opinions on if a Chicken Big Mac’s a Big Mac," the chain wrote in news release.
