Historic flooding in East Tennessee and North Carolina swept away a part of I-40 East near the state line on Friday.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The only two direct interstate routes between Tennessee and North Carolina are going to be cut off for a long time, transportation officials said Tuesday.
Interstate 40 in North Carolina's Pigeon River Gorge and Interstate 26 in Erwin, Tennessee both suffered massive damage from Hurricane Helene's catastrophic flooding.
On I-40 in North Carolina, a section located three miles from the Tennessee state line partially collapsed into the Pigeon River. Aerial footage showed missing chunks of the interstate on the eastbound side that runs along the river.
On I-26 in Unicoi County, Tennessee, flooding destroyed both sides of the interstate bridge that runs over the Nolichucky River in Erwin.
The repairs needed to I-40 will take "months" at a minimum, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation. That means drivers will need to plan for lengthy detours if they intend to drive between North Carolina and Tennessee.
NCDOT said it is working on mapping detour routes, but said it's likely most traffic will have to enter North Carolina and Tennessee through Virginia via I-81 and I-77 until repairs are complete.
Tennessee drivers not hauling cargo may have luck on some secondary highways. The Asheville Highway route to I-26 between Greeneville, Tennessee and Weaverville, North Carolina has reopened, allowing access to Asheville.
On Tuesday, NCDOT said the sections of I-40 and I-26 south of Asheville were reopened to traffic, which restored interstate access between the Western Carolinas.
Donald Maier, an associate professor of practice at the University of Tennessee's supply chain program, said I-26 and I-40 are essential routes for freight shipments that move from west to east. He also said shipments that move from north to south would use I-26.
"Now all of a sudden, you have essentially a bottleneck that basically is gone," he said. "With those two interstates being removed, what's the freight going to travel on?"
He said the impact of the road closures could impact inventories at grocery stores or bulk shipments like lumber because truckers need to drive more miles to deliver shipments between eastern and western locations. He also warned that the prices of consumer goods would likely rise by around 20% in the short term and by up to 40% if the effects are compounded by a dockworker strike.
He said the extent of the impact of the closure would be determined by how quickly the states fix and reopen the roads.
"If I'm a truck driver, you just added double the amount of time it would take just for me to go from Knoxville to Asheville — the amount of time has doubled. That eats into my hours of service, or the legal amount of time that I can drive in a 24-hour period," he said. "Obviously folks in Asheville or in northeast Tennessee are going to need to have more supplies just to survive. Getting that freight to them is just going to take a little longer."
He also said backroads in the area could start to see more traffic, adding another level of complexity for truck drivers navigating between Tennessee and North Carolina. He said to go around the closures and blockages, they may need to take backroads.
"It's probably going to be a quick week for just those lines to recover from this immediate issue. Long-term, we're looking at something that's going to last six or more months," he said.
He also said supply chain issues could be complicated by the dockworker strike that started Monday night.

TEMA works with the Tennessee Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (TNVOAD) to organize volunteer efforts. It’s important to note that volunteers are appreciated, but should organize efforts through official means rather than self-deploying. This, because heading into an unknown disaster area can be unsafe, creating more harm than good.

Many Tennessee neighborhoods remain without water or power, and some communities lost homes and businesses in the destructive floods brought on by Hurricane Helene.

The Regal Pinnacle movie theater at Turkey Creek is collecting donated items for East Tennessee flood relief 9 a.m.-9 p.m. daily Oct. 7-11. Donations can be dropped off at the box truck and security vehicle, the theater said in a Facebook post.
Items being accepted are bottled water, Powerade/Gatorade, blankets, toiletries, flashlights, batteries, baby formula and supplies, non-perishable foods, protein bars, first aid supplies, wet wipes and disinfectant.

Dollywood is serving as a donation drop-off location for the city of Pigeon Forge to collect cleanup items for flood victims.

Xul Beer Company is taking water donations at its downtown location Oct. 1-11. The donations will be delivered Oct. 5 and Oct. 12.
Water jugs and water cases will be accepted at this donation location.
MORGAN WALLEN FOUNDATION
The Morgan Wallen Foundation will have a food drive 6 a.m.-7 p.m. Oct. 9 at West Town Mall/Dick's House of Sport.
Items being accepted include bottled water, pop-top canned food (no opener needed), and ready-to-eat foods (protein bars, crackers, peanut butter, etc.). A limited number of giveaways will be available to donors.

TEXAS ROADHOUSE RESTAURANTS
A dozen Texas Roadhouse restaurants around East Tennessee will donate 100% of the night's profits on Oct. 10 to the East Tennessee Foundation’s Neighbor to Neighbor Disaster Relief Fund.

ANAKEESTA
Anakeesta theme park in Gatlinburg is donating $1 of every general admission ticket through Oct. 15 to support recovery efforts in Cocke County.
Proceeds are going directly to local organizations and relief funds working on the ground in Cocke County to restore homes, assist displaced families, and rebuild critical infrastructure, according to a press release.
ANDERSON COUNTY
Anderson County is collecting donations of bottled water to send to Cocke County. Packs of bottled water can be dropped of at the Anderson County Detention Facility, 308 Public Safety Lane in Clinton
The water will be loaded on semi-trucks provided by Carter Logistics and Advanced Transportation for delivery to specific distribution points in Cocke County in coordination with local government officials.
The Anderson County Sheriff’s Department will accept donations of batteries and contractor-grade trash bags to provide to Cocke County.
CLAYTON HOMES
The Clayton Home Building Group is hosting a donation drive and invites the public to drop off supplies at participating facilities in East Tennessee.

YOUNG-WILLIAMS ANIMAL CENTER
Young-Williams Animal Center is working with nine counties to transport and distribute pet food, crates, toys, cleaning agents, kitten formula and other supplies. Pet supplies can be donated at the 3201 Division St. location, or online at young-williams.org/wishlist.
The shelter also is taking in cats and dogs to help impacted shelters make room for lost animals or animals who need temporary housing. Adoptions are currently free.

Logs, branches and other waste have been washing down the Tennessee River system since flooding hit last week.
LENOIR CITY, Tenn — All that debris that's been washing down the East Tennessee river system has to go somewhere. Right now a sampling of it is collecting at Fort Loudoun Lock's upper approach area near Lenoir City.

"Our team is actively addressing the situation using our work boat to safely push the natural debris (such as branches and trees) out of the lock chamber. This debris will then pass through the spillway gates at Fort Loudoun Dam, where it will continue down the Tennessee River," said Michael Davis, public affairs specialist with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District. "We are committed to ensuring safety during this process and our team will also make sure to remove any non-natural debris, such as plastics or trash, for proper disposal to prevent environmental harm."
He added: "It’s important to note that the debris accumulation in the lock chamber is minimal compared to the significant volume of debris moving through the spillway gates as floodwaters from Tropical Storm Helene move along the Tennessee River. The natural flow of the river system carries this debris downstream continuously.
"Clearing the lock chamber is crucial to prevent potential damage to the lock and to ensure the safe navigation of vessels in the area."
After a heavy bout of rain, Tennessee River waters can be treacherous with all the debris that's in it. Some you may be able to spot from a boat; some you may not.
Normally, barge and other boat traffic can pass through the lock, one of several in TVA's Tennessee River system.

But the lock is currently closed while TVA spills tons of extra water from East Tennessee waterways that fell as the remnants of Hurricane Helene moved across the region.
According to TVA, the 60-by-360-foot lock at Fort Loudoun raises and lowers rivercraft about 70 feet between the reservoir and Watts Bar Reservoir when it's in operation.

Other locks closed right now: Watts Bar Lock, Chickamauga Lock at Chattanooga and Nickajack Lock near Jasper.
TVA owns the dams and locks on the river. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers operates and maintains the locks for navigation in partnership with TVA, Davis said.
