LUBBOCK, Texas— The deadline to register to vote is just around the corner. Monday, Oct. 7, is the last day to show up at the Lubbock County Elections Office or mail a postmarked registration form. Historically, 18 to 24-year-olds have had low turnout rates during elections, but that’s beginning to change. More young people are encouraging their peers to get registered.
In 2020, 66% of college students voted, compared to 53% the year before. College students like Nia Baker with Tech the Vote hope to keep up that momentum.
“We’re just trying to raise that number because everybody should be able to vote if they have the power to. No matter if it’s here in Lubbock or back home,” Baker said.
Tech the Vote, an organization at Texas Tech, helps people register to vote, whether by walking them through the process online or by helping them change their address so they can vote in Lubbock without worrying about a costly flight or long drive home.
“My dad always says, ‘Be the change that you want to see in the world,’ so I’m trying to do that person by person,” Baker said.
Austin Smith, a freshman at Texas Tech, took some time on campus Friday to grab a clipboard and register to vote. EverythingLubbock.com stopped to ask him why.
“I just feel like in order for a democracy to be successful, for it to work, everybody has to share their opinion. Everybody has to share their voice,” Smith said.
However, voting is not always that simple. College is busy, and many students find it hard to make time to register. Some also have a hard time navigating the paperwork required or the process itself.
“You just have so much in a day and there’s always deadlines. You’re trying to meet those, and you’re just trying to get stuff done with the days you’re given. Sometimes you don’t have as much free time as you’d like to have,” Kaden Morton, a freshman at Texas Tech said.
Baker said she understands the challenges that come with voting and being a college student, which is why she will be out this weekend alongside other Tech the Vote members to make the process easier for students.
Citizens can register to vote in person or by mail. Early voting begins Monday, Oct. 21. Election day is Nov. 5.

Winds will remain light from the southeast this evening, but turn from the southwest by the morning. These southwest winds will make for a slightly warmer start in Lubbock on Saturday morning. Temperatures will drop to the mid and low 60s off the Caprock.

Drivers will find prices at the gas pump are slightly lower than last month, on average, but conflict in the Middle East and hurricane activity in the Gulf of Mexico could change the situation quickly in the weeks ahead.
Oil prices surged late last week on the news of Israel's intent to launch a retaliatory strike on Iran, just the latest in a series of escalatory actions taken by the nation to assert its power in the region since the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas one year ago. Israel, which carried out strikes against northern Gaza and southern Lebanon over the weekend, is reportedly considering striking Iran's oil production facilities. Iran accounts for 3% of the world's oil supply.
Also, this year's busy hurricane season forecasted by weather experts continues to unfold. Hurricane Milton is expected to strengthen into a Category 5 hurricane before making landfall in part of the same region still reeling from Helene's destruction in the last few weeks.
The U.S. is producing more oil than any country at any time in history, and some analysts believe the U.S. has enough inventory to withstand any shocks to supply.

LUBBOCK, Texas — A statement from the Regional Director of the Texas Department of Public Safety Officers Association delivered the unfortunate news about Trooper Kevin Ramirez Vasquez losing his life after battling complications and life-threatening injuries after responding to a wreck earlier this month.
DPS said the Trooper was seriously hurt and was taken to Medical Center Hospital in Odessa before being airlifted to Lubbock. A statement from DPS said the trooper was outside his vehicle investigating a crash when he was hit by a vehicle from a previous report
A statement from Regional Director regarding Trooper Kevin Ramirez Vasquez:
“Today is a very somber day, as our hearts weigh heavy in reporting the tragic death of Texas Highway Patrol Trooper Kevin Ramirez Vasquez. On Tuesday, September 17th while investigating a crash, Trooper Ramirez Vasquez was struck by a vehicle. He was quickly transported to Medical Center Hospital in Odessa before being airlifted to Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock.
This morning, Trooper Ramirez Vasquez acceded to his injuries with his loving family by his side. Trooper Ramirez Vasquez, a United States Army Veteran, joined DPS in 2023, a graduate of Class A-23 and was stationed in Odessa. Trooper Ramirez Vasquez is a man of valor, honor, purpose, and a true servant leader, he will never be forgotten. Please keep Trooper Ramirez Vasquez’s family, friends, and colleagues in your prayers.
Today, in his final lifesaving act, Trooper Ramirez Vasquez’ organs were donated to save others. Funeral services for Trooper Ramirez Vasquez are pending at this time and will be shared soon.”
Trooper Kevin Ramirez Vasquez, U.S. Army veteran and recent graduate of DPS class A-23, was working a crash in Ector County, when a vehicle struck an Ector County Sheriff’s department vehicle, critically injuring Trooper Vasquez who was outside of the vehicle. The Deputy, who was in his vehicle was injured as well. Trooper Vasquez was flown to a hospital in Lubbock with life threatening complications.
The DPS Troopers Foundation is raising money for the Vasquez family through Help-a-Hero. A fee is charged up front, 100% of donations go to the family.
