Final preparations for Hurricane Milton should be made Tuesday, officials advised as the powerful Category 4 hurricane makes its way to Florida.
Brevard County is under a hurricane watch and flood watch, as well as under a local state of emergency. Those will likely be upgraded as the storm approaches.
Milton is churning in the Gulf of Mexico and taking aim at the Tampa area, likely to hit late Wednesday. From there, it’s expected to cross the state and pass-through Brevard as possibly a Category 1 hurricane.
“Hurricane preparations should be underway and completed by tonight,” according to the National Weather Service in Melbourne.
When is Hurricane Milton going to reach Florida?
The current forecast and hurricane tracker shows Hurricane Milton making landfall near Tampa Bay at 1 a.m. Thursday as a Category 3 tropical cyclone with storm winds topping 120 mph. The storm is expected to then cross the Florida Peninsula in the hours after and exit into the Atlantic Ocean somewhere possibly on the Space Coast.

7:00 a.m.: Sandbag distribution continues Tuesday ahead of Hurricane Milton
Sandbag distribution locations will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Lines may close early to ensure a timely closure. Be prepared to wait as residents reported to be in line for hours yesterday.
Here are the four county locations:
• Chain of Lakes Park, 2300 Truman Scarborough Way, Titusville.
• Mitch Ellington Park, 577 Hall Road, Merritt Island. Enter from West Hall Road.
• Wickham Park, 2500 Parkway Drive, Melbourne. Enter using south access from Parkway Drive.
• Eastern Florida State College-Palm Bay Campus, 250 Community College Parkway SE, Palm Bay.
There is a limit of 10 sandbags per vehicle. Bags are provided.
Sandbags also can be purchased at home improvement stores and filled with dirt from a resident’s own property. It is illegal to fill sandbags with sand from the beach.
6:50 a.m.: Decision on shelters in Brevard expected later today
As of Tuesday morning, there are no shelters open in Brevard County.
Officials with Brevard County Emergency Management said they are working with the National Weather Service in Melbourne to monitor the track and impacts of Milton. That will determine if and when shelters do open.
If they do, they will be open to all, including Brevard’s homeless population.
According to the Brevard Homeless Coalition, there has been an 87% increase in unsheltered homeless people in Brevard County since 2022. During the annual point-in-time homeless count on Jan. 25, 779 of the 1,071 homeless people surveyed in Brevard County were without shelter.
"Storms are especially challenging in Brevard due to the lack of existing overnight, low-barrier shelters," said Amber Carroll, executive director of the Brevard Homeless Coalition. "It often requires the county to open temporary safe shelters and rely on organizations like Matthew’s Hope, which is willing to open its doors to those in need. We also work with partners like Daily Bread, which plays a crucial role in providing food and support before and after the storm."

1:30 p.m.: Orlando International Airport to cease operations starting Wednesday morning
Orlando International Airport, as well as Orlando Executive Airport, will be closed to commercial passenger and private operations beginning Wednesday morning.
The airports will remain open to accept emergency/aid and relief flights as necessary. Commercial operations will resume once damage can be assessed and it’s safe to continue operations.
Passengers are encouraged to check with their airlines for flight updates.
1:25 p.m.: Eastern Florida State College cancels classes Tuesday through Thursday
Eastern Florida State College announced Monday classes would be cancelled Tuesday through Thursday.
Online classes were canceled as well during that timeframe. Joe Ambrose, director of EFSC emergency management, expected campuses to reopen on Friday and for classes to resume next Monday.

1:10 p.m.: Orlando-based Rosen hotels offering discounted rooms
Once again, Rosen Hotels & Resorts is offering deeply discounted rates to residents in the path of a hurricane.
The Orlando-based hotel chain activated its Florida Resident Distress Rates, which has rooms as low as $69. This offer is often available during hurricanes, most recently last month for Hurricane Helene.
Participating hotels are:

12:51 p.m.: Brevard Zoo will be closed Wednesday, Thursday for Hurricane Milton
Brevard Zoo announced it will be closed Wednesday and Thursday “in an abundance of caution,” as Hurricane Milton is expected to hit the area.
Zoo officials said updates on when the zoo will reopen will be posted on its website and social media channels.
“Your safety, as well as our amazing staff and animals, is our top priority,” read a message posted on the zoo’s website. “We appreciate your understanding and can’t wait to welcome you back once the storm passes.”
12:45 p.m.: Brevard County School Board meeting time moved because of Milton
The Brevard County School Board meeting scheduled for Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. will take place instead at 9:30 a.m.
The change is due to the approaching Hurricane Milton. A message on the school district's Facebook page states district officials are monitoring the storm alongside Brevard's Emergency Management.

12:18 p.m.: Long lines at sandbag distribution centers in Brevard
Overwhelming demand for sandbags generated significant traffic jams Monday morning surrounding Wickham Park in Melbourne, with hundreds of idling vehicles clogging roadways as looming Hurricane Milton rapidly intensified to monstrous Category 4 strength.
Drivers seeking sandbags started lining up by 5:30 a.m. along Wickham Park's southern entrance off Parkway Drive — 2½ hours before a Brevard County free sandbag distribution site was scheduled to open.
County-operated sandbag sites will remain open until 6 p.m. Monday at Wickham Park and three other locations:
Brevard County Public Works is providing sand, and Brevard County Sheriff’s Office supervised inmate work crews are filling and loading sandbags. Bags are provided and filled by on-site personnel. Limit of 10 sandbags per vehicle.

12 p.m.: County officials: Remove any outside debris, it won't get picked up before Milton
County officials are advising Brevard County residents to bring inside any debris or trash piles that may have been placed curbside for pickup.
While today and tomorrow will be normal trash collection days, the schedule for the remaining part of the week remains unknown. A message on the Brevard County Solid Waste Management Facebook page states residents should not place any "large, loose vegetative debris piles curbside (clam piles), as it is unlikely they will be serviced before the storm.”

DeSantis has declared a state of emergency for 51 counties ahead of Milton’s landfall on the Florida west coast. On the Space Coast, Peak Sustained Winds of 74 mph, Peak Wind Gusts of 87 mph, and total rainfall of 8 to 12 inches is forecast.
In anticipation of the potential impacts from Hurricane Milton, Brevard County is offering free sandbags for residents, which opened at 8 a.m. Monday, and will close at 6 p.m.
The National Hurricane Center’s 8 a.m. report had Milton as a Category 3 with winds of 125 mph, but just one hour later, Hurricane Hunters reported it grew into a Category 4 storm, with winds of 150 mph.
DeSantis said hurricane watches were in effect for more than 6 million people in west-central Florida and tropical storm watches are in effect for Florida’s Gulf Coast.
“Milton can bring a variety of life-threatening dangers, including an extreme storm surge of 10-15 feet along and near the coast, including in the Tampa Bay area, destructive winds and major flooding to one of the most densely populated parts of Florida, the I-4 corridor, especially from Tampa toward Orlando,” said AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Jon Porter.

Sand is being provided by Brevard County Public Works and the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office will have supervised inmate work crews filling and loading sandbags for residents.
Residents do not need to bring sandbags, bags are provided and filled by on-site personnel. There is a limit of 10 sandbags per vehicle. Please be aware, lines may be closed earlier than 6 p.m. to ensure a timely closure.

Overwhelming demand for sandbags generated significant traffic jams Monday morning surrounding Wickham Park in Melbourne, with hundreds of idling vehicles clogging roadways as looming Hurricane Milton rapidly intensified to monstrous Category 4 strength.
Drivers seeking sandbags started lining up by 5:30 a.m. along Wickham Park's southern entrance off Parkway Drive — 2½ hours before a Brevard County free sandbag distribution site was scheduled to open.
Minutes after that 8 a.m. opening time, the line of vehicles snaking down Parkway Drive started backing up onto U.S. 1 beneath steady rainfall. Near the park's western edge, both lanes of Wickham Road snarled to a crawl southward to the Lake Washington Drive traffic light and beyond, punctuated by occasional honking horns from frustrated motorists.
"Obviously, demand is high. This is not people's only alternative for getting bags. If they think they need bags, they can get them at a hardware store or other retail," said Don Walker, county spokesperson.
"They can use potting soil. They can use mulch. If they want free sandbags, we're trying to make them available to everybody. Everyone's just going to have to be patient," Walker said.
County-operated sandbag sites will remain open until 6 p.m. Monday at Wickham Park and three other locations:
These sites will open again from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday. Brevard County Public Works is providing sand, and Brevard County Sheriff’s Office supervised inmate work crews are filling and loading sandbags. Bags are provided and filled by on-site personnel. Limit of 10 sandbags per vehicle.
Rainwater already topped most ditches surrounding Wickham Park on Monday morning, and ponding was occurring across nearby rain-soaked Harbor City Golf Course. A National Weather Service flood watch remains in effect across Brevard through Thursday morning — with Milton forecast to dump another six to eight inches of cumulative rain and 10-plus inches in some areas.
"Deep moisture and a lingering frontal boundary across south Florida will lead to rounds of heavy rainfall continuing through midweek ahead of and with the passage of Milton. This will increase the risk for flooding as multiple parameters are in play and bring heavy rainfall over already saturated soils," a NWS hazardous weather outlook said.
Shortly after noon Monday, Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey delivered a video update from the sandbag line at Mitch Ellington Park on Merritt Island.
“The wait times right now are about 2½ hours," Ivey said.
"So if you’re going to be coming out, make sure you’ve got something to drink to stay hydrated, snacks. If you’ve got children in your car, something to entertain them a little bit — because it could be a pretty healthy wait," he said.
The city of Titusville opened a free self-service sandbag distribution site Sunday afternoon at 385 N. Singleton Ave., and supplies ran out. The site reopened Monday with plans to operate until 5:30 p.m. Bags, shovels and sand are provided.
Melbourne officials scheduled an additional sandbag site for city residents from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday while supplies last at Club 52/Greyhound Park, 1100 N. Wickham Road. Enter from Sarno Road. Motorists can receive up to 10 filled sandbags per vehicle with proof of Melbourne residency.
Brevard officials remind residents that it is illegal to fill sandbags with sand from the beach.

Hurricane Milton exploded into a Category 5 storm Monday in the Gulf of Mexico with its sights set on Tampa before crossing the state and hitting Brevard.
Forecasters expect the system to weaken somewhat, but is still expected reach the Tampa area Wednesday as a powerful hurricane. Once it gets to Brevard late Wednesday, Milton could still be a Category 1 hurricane, subjecting the Space Coast to strong winds and heavy rainfall, as well as storm surge.
Preparations were in full swing as sandbag distribution centers opened Monday and Brevard Public Schools and Florida Tech canceled school midweek. Lines at the sandbag distributions center were already long Monday morning with a long string of cars waiting at the Wickham Park location.
“Today and tomorrow will be the days to finalize preparations,” Brendan Schaper, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Melbourne told FLORIDA TODAY early Monday. “Have all those plans in place by end of the day Tuesday because conditions will get worse Wednesday.”
Brevard will get steady rain leading up to Hurricane Milton’s arrival
The next few days will include consistent rain, which only increases the chance for flooding once Milton does arrive.
Tuesday will see an increase in winds, which could be as high as 25 mph along the coast.
“Later Wednesday into early Thursday, based on the current track and speed, conditions will decline as the day progresses,” Schaper said. “Tropical storm force winds increase basically as we get into Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday night. There is a chance we could see hurricane force gusts winds close to what the center would be at that point.”
Residents are encouraged to get sandbags from one of the county’s four distribution centers. They are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Brevard Public Schools, Florida Tech, EFSC closing midweek
Brevard Public Schools announced Sunday that it would close all schools on Wednesday and Thursday. Schools are open Monday, and at this time, the district said, schools were expected to be open Tuesday and Friday. "We will update families if anything changes," the district said.
Eastern Florida State College said all its campuses would be closed Tuesday through Thursday.
Classes at Florida Tech will be canceled beginning Tuesday at noon. They will be canceled all day Wednesday and until at least noon Thursday. University residence halls will remain open with students sheltering in place.
As of now, classes are scheduled to resume virtually at noon Thursday. Classes will continue to be virtual Thursday afternoon and Friday.
Threats from Hurricane Milton prompted the cancellation of Tuesday's meeting of the Brevard County Commission.
FPL gets ready
Florida Power & Light Co. has implemented its emergency response plan in anticipation of large-scale power outages in Florida from Hurricane Milton.
But the company warned that utility workers from other companies who otherwise would be available to help FPL in storm recovery efforts in Florida are working in other states affected by Hurricane Helene.
"Thousands of resources are responding to the dire situation in the Southeast U.S. following Hurricane Helene," FPL said in a statement. "While that’s exactly where they should be, it could impact the resources available from utilities that typically support Florida."
Port Canaveral closure likely
Port Canaveral remained open Monday, but is expected to close later in the week as Hurricane Milton approaches Brevard Count. Any closure would halt all cruise and cargo traffic.
The port said "vessel owners and operators should review heavy-weather plans, and make necessary plans to safeguard vessels, crews and/or facilities."
The timing of a closing of the port was undetermined Monday morning, as was its impact on cruise schedules out of Port Canaveral.
Yard debris and Waste Management
If there’s debris, lawn clippings or any items you lugged to your curb for trash collection, drag them back inside before Wednesday when the impacts of Hurricane Milton will reach Brevard.
County officials strongly urge residents to check Waste Management schedules this week. Pickup days are likely to be affected by the Category 4 storm, that is forecast to bring winds as high as 75 mph to the Space Coast.
“People do not need to be putting out piles of trash right now,” said Don Walker, spokesman for Brevard County. “Do not be the guy who puts the trash out now because then you’ll be the guy who is responsible for trashing the neighborhood when the winds start blowing.”
