PHOENIX — Two people are dead and three people are injured following a mobile home fire in north Phoenix, the city's fire department said.
The fire was reported on Sunday morning around 9:40 a.m. near Cave Creek Road and Union Hills Drive. The fire fully engulfed one trailer and then damaged a second trailer to the north of the first, authorities said.
“It just started off with a slight bit of smoke and in seconds it just went kapoof," Susan Marian, a witness, said. “To see how fast it went, it was just like a cardboard box.”
Three people were taken to the hospital with burn injuries, at least one person was in critical condition. Two people were pronounced dead at the scene.
A woman visiting the Michigan Palms Mobile Home Park told 12News she heard what sounded like an explosion before seeing flames and smoke coming from her friend's trailer.
“They’re my homies. I’ve known them for a long time," Marisol Ross Lopez said. “I ran. I ran crying because I couldn’t do nothing.”
Fire officials said they don't know what caused the fire or if there were any accelerants in the trailer.
“At this point, that’s what the fire investigator’s job is. We do have accelerant detecting dogs that, if needed, they can bring out, but that’s going to be on what they feel like they need to do," Phoenix fire Captain Todd Keller said.
12News saw fire dogs on scene.
The five residents in the second trailer are displaced. No firefighter injuries were reported and Phoenix fire said they are working to determine the cause of the fire.

This is the case for Copper Star Coffee, a small, cozy coffee shop on Seventh Avenue in Phoenix. In addition to the firefighter regulars, the business attracts hundreds of happy customers from all backgrounds every day to grab a coffee, a donut, or one of their specialty bagels.

Walking in, customers smell that strong coffee smell and can hear the happy chatter of everyone waiting patiently for their coffee. Up above, they see Copper Star’s busy but energetic team making sure everyone is served on time.
According to owner Bill Sandweg, demand for the goods — which sell at slightly less than Starbucks prices, with every one made fresh and local — is very high. The team makes 350-600 bagels a day on top of their other items, but that’s sometimes not enough.
“By noon on Sundays we run out of bagels, ‘cause we don’t have any backup and we’ve already sold off the 420 we’ve made and the 50 or so that we had left over from Saturday,” said Sandweg, laughing.
Sandweg explained that the homemade bagels — a recent addition — now make up 45% of their total sales. Customers love the bagels, and still love the iconic coffee and pastries as well.
Copper Star Coffee was founded in 2006 by Bill and Ginger Sandweg in what was once an old gas station, originally branded as Copper Star Cafe.
Sandweg explained that Copper Star Coffee was founded with, and still continues to work with, a “Do it yourself” attitude.

When there wasn’t a good coffee shop around, they made one. When there weren’t good ingredients at the store, they found individual suppliers. And when there weren’t fresh bagel makers, they took the dive and started making their own.
Throughout years of hardship and adaptation, Sandweg explained that Copper Star has only gotten bigger and stronger, and they’re proud of what they’ve been able to accomplish.
But on top of the bargain prices and the award-winning ingredients like their homemade Jasmine Syrup, what brings people back to Copper Star Coffee is their commitment to their community.
Karla Henriksen, or “KJ,” who has come to Copper Star for the last 8 years with her two Boston terriers, explained that one of her favorite things is the constant friendliness.
“We come every morning and order the same coffee, and he gives homemade treats to the boys, to the dogs here. It’s very dog friendly, so we love it. And I know all of the baristas, and it’s just so friendly. We really enjoy it!” Henriksen said.
And along with community comes the neighborhood. Copper Star Coffee is located within the Melrose district, the proverbial “gayborhood” of Arizona.
Sandweg explained that this location — and commitment to the LGBTQ+ community — is something Copper Star takes seriously.
“We’re an LGBTQIA friendly establishment, because that’s what our neighborhood is. If you live in the Melrose District, any restaurant or any business holds a mirror up to the community that surrounds it, to the customers that come in,” Sandweg said.
“All of us are allies. I do worry about my community, my neighborhood … I will not let hate win.”
Mike Fornelli, Executive Director of Phoenix Pride, said that LGBTQ-friendly businesses like Copper Star Coffee can help erase hate, one step at a time.
“Sometimes, for some people, just seeing that Pride flag hanging or that rainbow sticker in the window provides that comfort and reassurance,” Fornelli said.

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The Southwest Valley is getting a brand new freeway: state Route 30 between the Loop 202 and 303 freeways will offer drivers an alternate route to the Interstate 10.
It’s just one of the new roadway projects coming our way thanks to Maricopa County voters who approved Proposition 479, a sales tax for transportation funding.
More than 4.5 million people call the county home, and as the population grows, so does the need for Arizona’s transportation infrastructure to keep up.
“It’s good for business. It’s good for workers. It’s good for everyone who lives, works, and recreates in Maricopa County,” said Gov. Katie Hobbs.
On Friday, Hobbs and other leaders celebrated Prop 479.
Voters approved it by nearly 60%, continuing a half-cent sales tax that has been funding transportation projects in the county since 1985.
“Every entity, every city benefited. It wasn’t just Phoenix-centric, East Valley, or West Valley. We made sure the value and benefit to every one of us,” said Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke. He is also part of the Maricopa Association of Governments.
Prop 479 will pay for hundreds of new highway and HOV lane miles, 1,000 new or improved arterial lane miles, and nearly 30 miles of bus lines.
Transportation experts say all of that should help keep the Valley’s average commute to 30 minutes all the way to the year 2050.
“And we’re getting all of this without raising taxes,” said Gov. Hobbs.
But it was a bumpy road to get here.
In 2022, former Gov. Doug Ducey vetoed a bill that would have put the extension of this sales tax on the ballot sooner.
Supporters say if it didn’t pass this November, the consequences would have been dire.
“It’s never going to be enough to make it perfect, but without it, this would have been a complete and total unmitigated disaster,” said Greg Vogel, the CEO of Land Advisors Organization .
“We would have been in a world of hurt and hurt means congestion, a whole variety of things that impact the economy,” said Martin Shultz, a Proposition 479 supporter.
Hobbs said these roadway projects could boost the local economy by as much as $15 billion and bring new business to the Valley.
