“She was pretty cute. She took her time getting into the water a bit ... [and was] soaking up the sand, like she was rolling, putting her face in the sand,” Sarah Callan, the aquarium’s manager of animal rescue, told the Globe.
“You could tell that she was enjoying being back out there,” Callan said.
Named Nova by aquarium staff, the seal spent more than 10 weeks recuperating after she was found severely dehydrated.
A rare species for Southern New England, hooded seals are typically found in the Arctic and North Atlantic oceans. But Nova was discovered on Sept. 13 in Providence on the river’s western bank near the pedestrian bridge, after she was previously reported near Westerly’s Watch Hill and Mystic, Conn.

Callan said in September it was hard to say how Nova ended up in the area. The last time the aquarium had a report of a hooded seal nearby was in 2011, she said.
“With how quickly the environment is changing, it’s affecting these animals, and so we’re seeing different behavior patterns and trends with their movements and migration,” Callan said at the time.
When Nova appeared in Providence, she garnered quite a few onlookers, and some people got too close, causing her to eat rocks and sand as a stress response, according to aquarium staff.
As a result, Nova was “severely dehydrated, with a stomach full of rocks and gravel, and exhibited dangerously elevated sodium levels,” the aquarium said.
“It’s always tricky, because you need to get them that nutritional support,” Callan said Tuesday. “But we couldn’t do that by feeding her fish with how impacted her stomach was of rocks.”
Instead, Nova was given a “fish smoothie” several times a day through tube feeding, according to Callan.
“She was able to, luckily, pass all those rocks on her own, which we were so thrilled about,” Callan said. Otherwise, we would have had to, you know, put her through surgery, which is always risky with marine mammals specifically, too.”
Nova is now in “optimal nutritional condition,” the aquarium said.
But Callan noted Nova’s case provides an important lesson: People need to be mindful when near wild animals, and keep their distance.
“This could have been prevented if people were respectful and kept that distance,” she said.

Nova has been outfitted with a satellite tag and an acoustic tag so the aquarium can track her movements and learn more about how hooded seals and the species they share their ecosystem with “may be impacted by environmental changes,” officials said.
According to Callan, the staff is interested in learning more about how melting ice packs in the Arctic could be affecting the species, and how warming waters could be affecting their prey.
“It’s all connected,” Callan said. “If we learn about that with seals, that’s going to help be an indicator for how other species, even like dolphins or whales, might be affected as well.”

According to the aquarium, the name, Nova, was chosen to “honor the rarity of this remarkable seal and celebrate the bright start of the holiday season.”
“A nova is a rare, sudden and brilliant starburst which reflects both the seal’s special nature and the magic of the holidays,” staff said in the press release. “The name also nods to her Arctic roots, as hooded seals are often found in regions like Nova Scotia, connecting her story to her wild counterparts.”

PROVIDENCE — A Rhode Island man has been sentenced to nearly six years in federal prison after he admitted he kept about a pound of fentanyl in a Providence apartment he shared with five other people, including two infants.
In US District Court on Monday, Stanli S. Arias De La Rosa, 31, was sentenced to 71 months of incarceration and three subsequent years of supervised release, according to US Attorney Zachary Cunha’s office.
In late 2022, Arias was first arrested by the York County Sheriff’s Office in Nebraska, where, during a traffic stop, authorities found approximately 10 kilos of cocaine inside a vehicle he was driving, prosecutors said in a statement.

Arias was arraigned on those charges but failed to return to Nebraska after he was released, officials said.
In March 2023, a West Warwick detective who also served on the Rhode Island DEA Drug Task Force “developed information targeting the location of a high-level drug supplier,” prosecutors said.
“On March 10, 2023, authorities conducted a court-authorized search of Arias’ Providence residence and found narcotics strewn about the apartment,” Cunha’s office said in the statement. “Seized were approximately 454.9 grams of fentanyl, 43 grams of cocaine, 14.5 grams of crack cocaine, digital scales, and other items used in the preparation and distribution of narcotics.”

Authorities also found two women with their two infants and another man at the apartment at the time of the search.
Arias pleaded guilty in April to a charge of possession with the intent to distribute fentanyl, officials said.

The action started Friday night as Bishop Hendricken and La Salle Academy battled for the state championship. How fast does bad news travel in 2024? In the case of Hasbro's potential Pawtucket exodus, no more than an hour passed between the time the company's headquarters relocation search was reported in Boston and the phone of Rhode Island's economic development chief began lighting up about it.
The messages came first from Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien, who has been trying for years to tie Hasbro down to its longtime home, and pinged state Commerce Secretary Liz Tanner with a series of texts about Hasbro shortly after the Boston Business Journal's Sept. 16 report that the company was looking to move.
The Grebien texts, obtained by a public records request, were redacted by the state, thanks to an exemption in the state disclosure law that allows elected officials to keep their written communications secret.
Next came Gov. Dan McKee's chief of staff, Tony Afonso.
"FYI," Afonso wrote Tanner, sharing a link to the story. "Commerce says they did not receive any previous outreach from Hasbro about this. We are being asked if there were any talks with our office and Hasbro about efforts to keep them here."
"Just left you a message with the status and I also connected with the Mayor," Tanner replied.
The next day she asked Afonso if anyone from the governor's office had already spoken to former Hasbro CEOs Alan Hassenfeld or Alfred Verrecchia about what was going on.
RI officials appear caught off guard by potential move to Massachusetts
The Journal review of about two weeks' worth of texts and emails about Hasbro between members of McKee's administration. They show that the state was indeed caught off guard by the company's months-long and still ongoing flirtation with Massachusetts.
Tanner and other top state officials didn't have a immediate communications line to Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks or other top executives – even though they had all been at a Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce luncheon hours before the potential headquarters move was reported by the Boston Business Journal a little around 2:15 p.m.

"Hi Liz! Here is his top person who also [was] there today," Chamber CEO Lori White texted Tanner at 4:34 p.m. with a redacted email address. "No hyphen after Hasbro."
By 5 p.m., the McKee administration had mobilized to get a meeting with Cocks.
Commerce Corporation President Jim Bennett explained that Hasbro never returned workers to their La Salle Square Providence offices after COVID, but was still paying rent until next February. Bennett said the Procaccianti Companies, which owns the La Salle Square building, was no longer talking to Hasbro and instead is focused on another company whose name was redacted.
"Tara, Please get the email for Chris Cox [sic] from Secretary Tanner or Mayor Grebien," McKee wrote a group text that included his director of scheduling, Tara Chicharro. "Mayor Grebien has sent an email and received a response from Chris Cox saying he would meet when he returns from travel."
The morning after the news broke, a Tuesday, former Small Business Administration regional administrator Mark Hayward and future SBA New England chief Sandra Cano (at the time a state senator and Grebien's economic development chief) had offered their help as Tanner prepared to go to Ireland later in the week.
Hasbro describes Pawtucket HQ as 'showing its age'
On Wednesday, Grebien shared an internal Hasbro memo from Cocks to his employees with Tanner and McKee.
It described the company's Newport Avenue headquarters as "full of charm and history, but also showing its age." The company is now looking for a "more suitable HQ, including in the greater Boston area," but doesn't expect to move for 18 months.
McKee responded with a checkmark emoji.

Tanner also communicated with Jesse Saglio, a former Commerce Corporation president, during earlier rounds of talks with Hasbro, when word emerged that Pawtucket leaders were considering pitching Hasbro on a new headquarters on the now city-owned Apex property.
"You probably know this, but [there] was extensive work on this done with Fortuitous," Saglio wrote about discussions around making Hasbro part of Fortuitous Partners' Tidewater Landing soccer stadium development.
"And did Grebien play a big part then?" Tanner asked.
"Cheerleader mostly," Saglio replied. "Commerce and Fortuitous did the heavy lifting."
Fortuitous Partners executives declined comment.

U.S. Rep. Seth Magaziner also spoke with Cocks about Hasbro's headquarters and relayed his findings.
"For Hasbro − we will do an analysis of housing prices and commute times," Tanner wrote to her chief of staff Julietta Georgakis. "Congressman Magaziner talked to Chris Cocks. Says it's entirely a hiring problem they are trying to solve."
As the days went on, the communications turned more toward public messaging around the state's response.
Before the September news of a headquarters search, Tanner had last met with Hasbro executives in February, and she said they had not said anything about leaving Pawtucket at that time.

Thanksgiving is late this year, Nov. 28. But time is short if you want to score a reservation or place a takeout order.
If you are dining in and a restaurant says they are serving a turkey dinner, you can be assured that it's a feast. That means it comes with stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, potatoes and a vegetable. Often times you'll see root vegetables or Brussels sprouts and whipped or mashed potatoes. Desserts may also be included as well as a starter such a soup or salad.
With the takeout options, you'll most likely be given a cold meal ready to be warmed up at home. There are some very flexible dates for pick-up. They start early Thanksgiving week and go right up to the holiday.

Capital Grille
10 Memorial Blvd., (401) 521-5600, thecapitalgrille.com, will be open for dining from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving. They offer their entire menu as well as a turkey dinner special. You can also order a side dish package to pick up on Nov. 27 or Nov. 28.
Trattoria Appia
The restaurant at 245 Atwells Ave., Providence, (401) 383-2002, will serve noon to 7 p.m. and serve a Thanksgiving meal including farm-raised turkey and gravy, served with cranberry sauce and all the trimmings.
Fleming's Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar
One West Exchange St., (401) 533-9000, flemingssteakhouse.com, has three-course dinners starting at $65 for adults and $31 for children. Main dishes are roast turkey, filet mignon or bone-in ribeye. Each comes with a starter, sides and dessert. Hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fleming's also has a three-course bundle for six with pick-up or delivery on Nov. 22 to Nov. 27.
Mill’s Tavern
101 North Main St., (401) 272-3331, millstavernrestaurant.com, is seating diners from noon to 6 p.m. and serving a four-course fixed price dinner. The cost is $55 for adults and $25 for children. The dinner is available with a choice cider-maple brined roast turkey, petite Angus filet or Ponzu Glazed Salmon. Vegetarian option available on request.
A takeout option of a family style turkey dinner is $55 per person, with a four-person minimum. Takeout orders must be placed by Friday, Nov. 22 picked up on Thanksgiving at a scheduled time between 8 and 11 a.m. All takeout orders will be packaged cold and include reheating instructions.
Red Stripe
465 Angell St., (401) 437-6950, redstriperestaurants.com, will be open from noon to 7 p.m. with a traditional three-course dinner. It is the only meal to be served that day. The price is $39.95 and $19.95 for 12 and younger. The meal is available for takeout. Pickup will be at a scheduled time on Thanksgiving between 9 and 11:30 a.m. Order deadline is Nov. 21 by 5 p.m.
Fogo de Chao
148 Providence Place, Suite 2060, (401) 400-3888, features an open-air churrasco grill roasting meat over an open grill. They will serve the dinner menu on Thanksgiving from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
