PUEBLO, Colo. (KKTV) - Pueblo will soon be home to the largest hyperloop test track in the world and the only hyperloop test track in the United States. The test track is located at PuebloPlex, just north of Avondale in Pueblo County.

Representatives from Swisspod, the company manufacturing this technology say hyperloops are faster and more efficient modes of transportation and they’ll revolutionize the way people travel.

A hyperloop is a capsule or pod levitating inside of a tube and travels at very high speeds.

The CEO for Swisspod, Denis Tudor says hyperloops are, “... as fast as a plane and as convenient as a train.”

Once completed, the test track will cover 43 acres of land and will be the second largest vacuum chamber in the country.

Swisspod will be testing capsules which travel around 300 to 400 mph.

Tudor tells 11 News why Swisspod chose Pueblo for the location to work on this project saying, “Well, I think it’s it’s a great place.”

Tudor continues saying, “I think we found like Pueblo people really great here, especially PuebloPlex. They’ve been amazing with us with the developing of the whole facility. I think Pueblo has been very dynamic with us. It’s been very welcoming and it feels really great to be here.”

When asked where he would like to see the Swisspod hyperloop located when the project is completed, Tudor said, “Well, I think we (would) love to offer this for the United States.”

Tudor continues saying, “I think this is a great country the best country in the world, and I think that that’s something that (we) would be honored to offer for this country. This country gave me (so) many things, I mean I started here at SpaceX and I won the competition a couple of times, and now Pueblo gave me this opportunity to build the largest hyper test track in the world here. So we’d be extremely honored to offer this technology to this country and to offer this concept to this country.”

Tudor describes what their goal with the Swisspod hyperloop is saying, “The best way to say it is like distances won’t matter anymore.”

Tudor adds, “We’re going to change like really the way people are going to travel in the future. I think future should look really different... We’re here to celebrate like what’s going to be the future of transportation. So again, the future should definitely look different than today and this is going to be part of the future and this is something that’s going to change our lives. I think that’s going to be exciting.”

PUEBLO — The founders of travel innovation company Swisspod have a bold vision for the future of mass transit.

It is called Hyperloop.

A patented self-propelled pod traveling through a tube with air pressure removed.

“It's fully contactless. So…we have no wheels, we have like everything is going to levitate inside, we have no pressure, so there is no contact with the air or with a rail. So it's like running in space, literally like running in space,” said Swisspod Co-founder, Denis Tudor.

Pueblo, Colorado is an essential part of turning innovation into reality.

It is where the first segment of a testing facility now offers a tangible look at what is ahead for the first of its kind project.

“This is going to be something that has never been tested before. We're looking to have like a unique technology running, like a contactless propulsion system, which hasn't been really tested before in this country,” said Tudor.

Picture a ten-minute trip from Pueblo to Denver, or Denver to New York in just over 90 minutes.

Pueblo community leaders see it also generating attention and interest to the area from other businesses.

“I think that this is going to help put Pueblo on the map. You know, we're out here at PuebloPlex, and we have lots of room for economic development and growth at PuebloPlex,” said Pueblo Mayor Heather Graham.

Pueblo is an important element of a fast-track plan coming together for the new kind of reliable high speed travel.

“I think that's going to be exciting. I cannot wait to be inside of the tube running at high speed, so I'll be the first passenger running inside the tube,” said Tudor.

The current timeline is to introduce a pod by November of 2025 and start testing around the same time.

PUEBLO, CO — Major roadwork is starting Monday in Pueblo at Highway 50 and I-25. I checked with CDOT and they say crews are just setting up. So, we shouldn't see any major headaches for at least a couple of months.

I'm told crews will be adding a diverging diamond just north of the current intersection. Amber Shipley, spokeswoman at CDOT talks with me about the new design that has drawn some controversy about its unconventional design. "You know, we all we all fear change. We're resistant to change, but the divergent diamond is a proven safety measure in highway development."

Taking a closer look, here's the plan for the new intersection:

Shipley says they plan on keeping two lanes of traffic open at all times during the work. Crews will be adding five new bridges. The work will add access for pedestrians and bikes. Also, it aims to provide smoother access for trucks, which have had some problems here before.

We talked with neighbors in Pueblo who say they're happy to hear about the upcoming work. "It’s a bridge that has seen better days. I think it’s time- overpopulation, you know we grow, so you gotta grow with it."

The project will cost $114 Million. As far as completion, we're looking at summer 2027. We'll keep our eye on this and let you know how it progresses.

Heavy snows continued to pummel Pueblo and much of southern Colorado Nov. 8, causing interstate shutdowns and business closures and bringing more than 2 feet of snow to some parts of Pueblo County.

The days-long storm, which began bringing heavy snowfall and biting cold temperatures to Pueblo on Nov. 5, caused Colorado Gov. Jared Polis to declare a disaster emergency Nov. 7 and authorize the Colorado National Guard to provide winter storm response support to impacted communities.

How much snow has fallen on Pueblo County during the storm?

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a cumulative total of 28.7 inches of snow had been recorded in Beulah as of 7 a.m. Friday, 12 inches of snow was recorded by that time in Colorado City, more than 9 inches was recorded in Pueblo, and a high of 8.4 inches was recorded in Pueblo West.

A winter weather advisory remained in effect for southern El Paso County, Pueblo County, Cañon City and eastern Fremont County through 5 a.m., Saturday, according to the NWS, with anticipated additional snow accumulations of between 4 and 10 inches and wind gusts as high as 40 mph.

Cameron Simcoe, a meteorologist at the NWS' Pueblo office, said the snowfall is just part of a "typical fall-winter storm passing over the area, bringing lots of snow and moisture."

He said the bulk of the snow expected had already fallen through Friday afternoon, though southern Colorado was expected to get an additional burst of snow late Friday afternoon, which would then start to "slowly dwindle down throughout the late overnight hours as the system pushes up to the northeast."

"Pueblo will probably start to dry out pretty quickly overnight as that storm moves up to the northeast," he said.

I-25 remained 'indefinitely' closed as of Friday afternoon

Interstate 25 was shut down in Pueblo on Nov. 7, from Mile Marker 91 on I-25 to the New Mexico state line, and remained indefinitely closed through Friday.

During that time, only local traffic, meaning residents of Colorado City, Rye and Walsenburg, were allowed to proceed to those locations, according to the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office.

In a travel update posted to X on Nov. 8, PCSO officials said the I-25 closure "remains in effect for the foreseeable future."

The PCSO's post noted that parking for semitrucks unable to proceed down I-25 was available in Pueblo at the old dog track at Pueblo Boulevard and Lake Avenue, with overflow parking available at the Pueblo Mall.

"Obviously, heed CDOT closures," Simcoe said. "Don’t ignore CDOT closures, they have things closed for a reason. If you have to travel, make sure you have an emergency kit with you — a shovel, extra food, water, blankets and such — but those are the big things if you have to go out.

"But if you can stay in, stay in and stay nice and warm."

What's in store for the Pueblo forecast over the weekend?

Simcoe said the Pueblo forecast calls for "much quieter" conditions come Saturday.

"The system pushes out and we'll very slowly start to warm up and we’ll start to clear out and it’ll be a little more typical fall-like weather, maybe still a little bit below average on the temperature, but we’ll dry out and it’ll be more sunny," he said.

Saturday's NWS forecast calls for a high of 38 degrees Fahrenheit, with mostly sunny conditions. Sunday and Monday's weather was expected to be largely the same, with anticipated highs of 45 degrees both days and sunny conditions.

Maximum fines for municipal offenses, technology and city elections are among the subjects addressed this election season through City of Pueblo Ballot Questions 2A, 2B, 2C and 2D.

Voters throughout the city will decide the fate of these four ballot questions. None of the questions concern an increase in taxes. Instead, a "yes" vote on any of the questions will result in a change to Pueblo City Charter.

City charter differs from city code: city charter describes what the mayor, council members, and other city departments are authorized to do, while city code specifies how city government officials are to carry out the authority given to them through the charter.

"It's really difficult to change the charter, all of these things that are in the charter require an election and the people to vote on any of these changes," City Clerk Marisa Stoller told the Chieftain. "The city code, basically it would take maybe a month to change with a majority vote of city council."

2A allows city to change maximum municipal court fines

The maximum fine imposed by Pueblo's Municipal Court is $1,000 but a city majority voting yes on City Ballot Question 2A allows city council to update the maximum fine. A new maximum fine could be updated to the State of Colorado's maximum of $2,650 or to an amount decided by council.

Municipal court judges still have the responsibility of assigning a fine in a given case, but amendments to the charter would give judges added flexibility in determinations, Stoller told the Chieftain.

2B updates terminology and technology references for 21st century

Nov. 2 will be the 71st anniversary of the 1953 municipal election in which Pueblo voters approved the holding of a "charter convention." Pueblo City Charter was adopted at the convention and approved by voters the following April.

While the charter has been amended several times within the past seven decades, a yes vote on 2B is an option for those feeling the charter's references to technology need an update. Updates include sections that would allow online publishing of city legal notices and removing paper copy requirements for indexed ordinances.

A yes vote on 2B also allows council to: change the $50 minimum for required equipment inventory keeping, include "significant financial loss" to the charter's emergency ordinance definition, make clarifications to the process for declaring a vacancy, and remove city attorney residency requirements, among other updates.

2C allows city to save money on 'standalone' elections

Most recall elections in the city are forced to be "standalone" elections, meaning elections coordinated solely at the city's expense. Varying with the cost of paper and the number of ballots needed for a standalone election, the city may end up shouldering costs around $250,000, Stoller said.

A yes vote on 2C lessens the need for standalone elections by expanding the timeframe for recalls if there's an opportunity to coordinate the election with Pueblo County.

2D revises charter to account for mail-in voting, modern equipment

Section 17-6 of the city charter states that elections shall be conducted "by voting machines whenever available." City of Pueblo Ballot Question 2D updates mail-in voting to be the preferred method. The measure also removes charter sections requiring the city clerk to register voters.

Other revisions listed in 2D include changes to: allow more flexibility in dates for mayoral runoff elections, allow petition timelines to be decided by ordinance, and allow campaign expense statement timelines to be decided by ordinance.
