WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) –Hotels in the Piedmont Triad are filling up with storm survivors from western North Carolina.
Many families who evacuated to Winston-Salem said it took them hours to navigate through the destruction, but they’re thankful to have a place to rest, take a shower and have access to food and cell service.
“They said, ‘If we can get out, get out,’” said Patrick Carter, who evacuated Asheville.
Leaving was a tough decision for Carter.
His family packed up and evacuated from Asheville. He said it was no longer safe.
“We had supplies, but once they ran out, we didn’t have any water or anything, so we were flushing … with the pool water. So it’s been kind of crazy,” Carter said.
They made it to a hotel in Winston-Salem on Monday.
It was supposed to be a nearly three-hour long drive, but they faced so many obstacles it took them nearly seven hours to get to Winston-Salem.
“It was just total destruction,” Carter said. “Everything was washed out. It was really hard to get out of the city because all the roads were just upended and closed.”
After arriving, Carter says they faced another challenge: Finding a place to stay.
“We’re going to stay in another place. It was totally booked … On the way over, every hotel we saw that we might be able to stay at … was just booked solid,” Carter said.
In Winston-Salem, the Hilton Garden Inn on Creekshire Way is fully booked. The majority of their guests are from western North Carolina.
FEMA has also secured rooms there.
Home 2 Suites on Marriott Crossing Way has extended stay rooms, and 80% of their rooms are booked. Hotel staff said many are evacuated families.
La Quinta Inn & Suites on Griffith Road is where Carter is now staying. It is 70% booked with the majority of the guests from western North Carolina.
He was able to find the hotel with the help of a friend living in Winston-Salem.
Carter is enjoying the comfort, but in his heart, he knows he won’t stay long. He’s getting supplies and will start to trek back home into the unknown.
“We’ve got to get these supplies to people. We have people that we know stayed behind that didn’t have anything, and they didn’t have a way to get out,” Carter said.
Carter plans to leave on Friday. Many major roads are reopening, so while he may face some obstacles his trip may be faster.

Goose has announced a pair of special benefit shows set to raise money for Hurricane Helene relief efforts. The two shows, set to take place at Winston-Salem, NC’s Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum (10/25) and Birmingham, AL’s Avondale Brewing Company (10/26) will take the place of a pair of performances in Asheville, NC which were canceled in the aftermath of the devastating storm.
Proceeds from the two new dates will support Hurricane Helene relief efforts in the Carolina Region, in partnership with Conscious Alliance and local organizations working directly with impacted communities in Western North Carolina. These benefit shows will support the delivery of essential supplies to Swannanoa, NC and surrounding areas and aid local organizations such as BeLoved Asheville and Hearts with Hands in their on-the-ground recovery and clean up work. Pre-sales for the Goose Hurricane Helene relief benefit shows will take place on Thursday, October 10th between 10:00 am ET and 10:00 pm ET. General on-sales will follow on Friday, October 11th at 10:00 am ET.

Bishop McGuinness senior Adelaide Jernigan announced on social media that she was going to stay close to home and play her college basketball at N.C. State.
Jernigan, a left-handed, 5-11 shooting guard/wing, was named the Journal’s Player of the Year the last two seasons. She averaged 19.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, three assists and three steals per game during her junior season in leading the Villains to the fourth round of the NCHSAA 1-A state tournament.
Jernigan helped lead the Villains to consecutive NCHSAA 1-A state championships in 2022 and 2023 and was named the Most Valuable Player in both of those games.
She has scored more than 1,500 points for the Villains during her career.
Jernigan had pared down her list of schools and was considering N.C. State, Kentucky, and Michigan before ultimately deciding on N.C. State.
Jernigan said that she let N.C. State assistant coach Ashley Williams know last Sunday that she was committing but to keep it a secret because she wanted to surprise Wes Moore, the head coach of the Wolfpack.
“She and I talk every day,” Jernigan said with a sly laugh. “And she helped me figure out a day when she knew that Wes would be in his office so I could come and surprise him. I went to Raleigh last Wednesday and told him in person and he lifted me up and gave me the biggest hug. He was so surprised. He had no idea. I also had a friend that goes to school there come and shoot the video that I posted on my social media.”
Jernigan said that several of her friends were getting suspicious of her activities when she left school early last Wednesday to head to Raleigh to deliver the news. Then she had to keep her decision under wraps.
“Yeah, that was really, really hard to keep that secret,” Jernigan said. “I told my family on Friday and my closest friends on Saturday.”
She also received offers from Iowa, Wake Forest, Louisville, Tennessee, Florida State, and Virginia Tech before narrowing the field down to her final three schools. Jernigan recently had in-home visits from the coaching staffs at N.C. State and Kentucky, who entered into consideration when former Virginia Tech coach Kenny Brooks was named the head coach of the Wildcats.
“She was very mature and very thorough about making this decision,” said Brian Robinson, the girls basketball coach at Bishop McGuinness.
“She originally wanted to make her commitment in May, but then she pushed it back to June and then ultimately decided to do it in October because she wanted to make sure that she had all the T’s crossed and I’s dotted.”
Jernigan was one of 26 players – 12 from the Class of 2024 and 14 from the Class of 2025 – invited to the 2024 U18 USA Basketball’s Women’s National Team Trials in May that competed at the FIBA U18 Women’s AmeriCup in Colombia, though she did not make the final roster.
It was the second time she was invited to participate for a USA Basketball National team. She also tried out for the U17 team after her freshman season at McGuinness in 2022.
“After the trials were over this year and she got back, she had a plan for how she wanted to handle her recruiting and a timetable for when she wanted to make the decision. I told her and her family how proud of her I was for how she handled everything, because there was some next-level thinking on her part during the process. And I know she is very happy with her decision.”
N.C. State is coming off a 31-7 season that ended with its first Final Four appearance since 1998. The Wolfpack has also made five Sweet 16 appearances and two Elite Eights since 2016.
“I really was stressing that having a family atmosphere was very important to me through the entire recruiting process, and the family feel around N.C. State was really strong and genuine with the entire staff,” Jernigan said. “They came to watch me play tennis recently and brought their lawn chairs to sit and watch us play and that was just great. We had wonderful conversations when they came for my home visit recently and it just felt so real with them. That family atmosphere I felt and staying closer to home were definitely clear factors for me in making my decision.”
Jernigan said it was tough to call the coaches at Kentucky and Michigan to let them know she was going to school elsewhere.
“That was one of the hardest things I’ve done,” she said. “But I think they both knew that it was going to be N.C. State.”
Jernigan will keep an active schedule before basketball practice begins Oct. 30.
She’ll be playing doubles in the Northwest Piedmont 1-A Conference tennis tournament, which begins on Tuesday, and there are also the upcoming 1-A state tournaments she hopes to qualify for.
“I’m doing basketball workouts in the mornings before school, then going to school, then tennis in the afternoon,” Jernigan said. “It definitely keeps me busy.”

Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc in western North Carolina, eastern Tennessee and upstate South Carolina over the weekend after making landfall along the Gulf Coast of Florida on Thursday night. The storm rapidly swept through the southeast and left devastating flooding, landslides, road closures and widespread power outages in its wake.
The storm’s death toll stands at 130 people, and the number is expected to rise as hundreds remain missing. On Tuesday morning, the death toll in North Carolina exceeded 40 people, according to Blue Ridge Public Radio.
As of publication, over 378,000 active power outages have been reported in North Carolina, primarily in the western part of the state, and temporary Starlink cell towers have been installed in some locations. Hundreds of roads remain closed, and the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has urged drivers to refrain from all non-emergency travel in western North Carolina.
Recovery efforts have begun in North Carolina, and the federal government has approved a Major Disaster Declaration for 25 counties and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. This declaration allows Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) aid to be allocated to the region. Search and rescue teams from 18 states are on the ground, and over 400 North Carolina National Guard members have been deployed.
In Winston-Salem and Forsyth County, dozens of non-profit organizations, businesses, schools and churches have set up drop-off donation locations, initiated fundraising efforts and provided volunteer assistance to affected areas.
In an effort to help raise awareness for relief efforts, the Old Gold & Black has compiled a list of local businesses and non-profits in Forsyth County donating proceeds or hosting supply drop-offs and events.
