Fifth Third Wealth Advisors, an affiliate of the Cincinnati-based bank, has opened an office in Winston-Salem staffed with veterans of Truist Financial planning services in the Triad.

Fifth Third is the 18th largest bank in the country and the eighth largest in North Carolina.

It has had an office in Greensboro for commercial and private banking at 701 Green Valley Road Suite 202 for about a decade.

Fifth Third Wealth Advisors' new team had managed $1.8 billion in client assets at their previous firm, according to Fifth Third.

The Fifth Third team will work temporarily at 615 St. George Court, Suite 300, in Winston Salem, until a permanent location is found, according to a company spokesperson.

Federally chartered Fifth Third has focused its North Carolina expansion on the Triangle, with regulatory approval received this month for its 26th branch in the region since 2020, in Apex. It has applications pending or approved with the office of the Comptroller of the Currency for two branches in Charlotte and one in Wilmington as well. Fifth Third Wealth Advisors opened a Charlotte office earlier this fall.

Fifth Third is the eighth-largest bank in North Carolina by deposit market share, according to TBJ research. It had about $7.7 billion, or about 1%, in deposits in North Carolina with 77 offices, according to the most recent Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation market report of June 30. Nationally, it was 18th with about $172 billion in federal insured deposits.

As the country’s largest bank continues its push into the Triad and North Carolina, it has applied for its third Guilford County branch at the site of a former fast food restaurant.

JP Morgan Chase filed an application with the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency for a staffed branch at the northwest corner of Westover Terrace and Green Valley Road in Greensboro. The federal agency received the application Oct. 31 and scheduled the end of the official comment period for Nov. 25.

Chase opened its first Triad branch in September 2023 at 435 Pisgah Church Road in the Village at North Elm plaza in northern Greensboro, and soon after began construction on a branch at 1610 New Garden Road in Greensboro.

It has since begun work on three branches in Forsyth County: 102 Laura Ave. at University Parkway, Stratford Road at Knollwood Street, and most recently in August, at Country Club and Jonestown roads, all in Winston-Salem.

The newest location is at 1501 Westover Terrace, where a 1980 building was a Hardee’s restaurant. Its listed owner in Guilford County property records is Franklin and Church LLC of Lyndhurst, New Jersey, which bought it in 2011 for about $1.5 million.

A Chase spokesperson told the Business Journal the bank plans to open up to seven Triad branches by the end of 2026, with the next being the New Garden road location later this month.

While many other large banks have cut back their branch networks in favor of online services, Chase announced in February plans to open some 500 branches and renovate 1,700 over three years. It says it has the largest branch network in the United States and the only one with branches in all lower 48 continental states. In North Carolina, it lists 39, including 13 in Charlotte, five in Raleigh, four in Cary, two each in Durham and Garner and one in several other cities.

A year into the Triad market, Chase remains among the smallest institutions in terms of market share by deposits. It ranked 22nd by deposit share as of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.'s most recent report for the Greensboro-High Point market, reflecting June 30 figures.

Wade Lindsay, a Winston-Salem native and self-taught baker, is the owner of the city’s newest bakery, Ginger Bread Man Bakery.

Ginger Bread Man opened Oct. 29 at 1318 Hawthorne Road next door to Ardmore Coffee.

And, yes, the bakery does sell gingerbread men. But the name came before the cookie.

“Being a redhead, you get called ‘ginger’ all the time,” Lindsay said, “and the play on words has always been a fun thing for me.”

If you look closely at the logo’s depiction of a gingerbread man, you can see a tuft of red hair coming out of the top of his head.

Lindsay said he got interested in baking as a child, helping his mother out in the kitchen. “Helping her bake cakes for Dad’s birthdays are some of my earliest memories,” he said.

Later, when his mother developed some health problems, Lindsay stepped in. “She got to a point where she couldn’t do it as much, so she wanted to teach me,” Lindsay said. “So I took that and started having fun with it on my own.”

From there, he just taught himself. “I’ve never worked in a bakery or a real kitchen,” he said. “I started doing potlucks for friends, and baking for my parents and brother.”

Ginger Bread Man Bakery is all vegan. But Lindsay hasn’t advertised it that way. “I want to be a bakery that happens to be vegan, not a vegan bakery,” he said.

Lindsay said he started eating a vegan diet himself about nine years ago. “I used to weigh over 300 pounds, and I wanted to lose weight and eat healthier,” he said.

He said he has worked hard to create vegan treats that taste just as good as their conventional counterparts. “The goal is to not be able to tell the difference. The goal is to have a bakery everybody enjoys, whether you have different allergies, different lifestyles.”

On entering the bakery, customers quickly notice that cupcakes dominate the display case.

“Cupcakes are definitely the driving force,” Lindsay said.

He makes a lot of different flavors, including baklava, birthday cake, lemon, chocolate gingerbread, pumpkin and carrot cake. Most cupcakes run $4.95.

He’s working on even more flavors, such as chai pear, chocolate peppermint and spiced apple cranberry. “I’m working on a lot of stuff with ginger now, because people are asking for ginger,” he said.

Brownies come plain ($4.55) and gourmet ($5.95) with a cookie-butter frosting and caramelized pecans and walnuts.

In addition to the gingerbread men, there are large chocolate-chip cookies — and Lindsay makes sandwich cookies with both of them. He also makes his own version of whoopie pies with cream filling sandwiched between two cake rounds.

Muffins include salted apple pecan, blueberry and pumpkin chocolate-chip. “These are our main ones, but we will rotate them,” Lindsay said, mentioning such other flavors as cinnamon-apple and double chocolate.

He also sells nondairy ice cream by the scoop, and said he may develop some treats that combine ice cream and his baked goods once warm weather returns.

Ginger Bread Man does not sell coffee, in deference to Ardmore Coffee next door, but it does have bottled and can cold beverages, including locally made Bingo Bango Soda.

Lindsay said he started dreaming of having his own baking business about 10 years ago, then started thinking about it more seriously in the last couple of years.

“During COVID, I capitalized on my free time to practice,” he said. “I had more success, coming up with my own recipes. And I had a lot of support from my friends and family, telling me I should pursue it.”

Seeing his brother, Jake, go into business for himself as owner of Robinhood Dog Walking also inspired Lindsay to open his own business.

Originally he planned to have a wholesale business, but that changed when a friend told him that this space on Hawthorne Road was available. “We’ve always loved the Ardmore area. Ardmore fits what I look for and the vibe of what I think of a community bakery being.”

How it Happened In the first quarter, the Bulldogs began the game on a 6-2 run. A Christiana McLean lay-up made the score 8-5 for the Bulldogs, with 3:18 left on the clock. The Bulldogs increased the score to 11-5 with 3:02 remaining. WSSU answered with a Christiana McLean jumper, making the score 11-7 with 2:42 remaining in the first quarter. The Bulldogs took a 15-9 lead into the second quarter.

In the second quarter, Barton went on a 5-0 run, taking a 20-9 lead with 7:47 left. A Karina Scott three-pointer made the score 20-12 with 7:39 remaining in the first half. The Bulldogs answered back with a 6-0 run, making the score 26-12 with 5:54 left. A La'Niya Simes and one cut the score to 27-15. The Rams cut the Bulldogs' lead to nine points, 29-20, on a La'Niya Simes's two free throws with 1:54 remaining. The Bulldogs took a 31-20 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, the Rams went on a 7-0 run, cutting the lead to 33-29 on a Christiana McLean lay-up with 7:17 left. The Bulldogs went on an 8-0 run, taking a 41-29 lead with 5:42 left. The Bulldogs went on a 9-0 run, giving Barton a 50-31 lead with 2:21 left. The Rams closed out the quarter with a 6-1 run. Barton took a 51-37 lead into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Rams cut the lead down to 52-45 on Christiana McLean's jumper with 6:56 left. Sierra Hunter cut the lead down to 54-49, on a lay-up with 5:21 to play in the game. Barton went on a 5-0 run pushing their lead to 10 points, 59-49 with 3:20 left. A Christiana McLean jumper cut the lead down to 59-53 with 2:00 remaining. Barton closed out the game defeating the Rams 64-56.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Winston-Salem State University women's basketball team has announced its signing class for the 2025-26 season.

"We are thrilled to welcome this year's signing class," said head coach L'tona Lamonte. "We were not expecting to get this many talented high school student-athletes. A lot of these young ladies picked the Rams over some good D1 schools, but the academics, atmosphere, relationship, and team chemistry played a big part in us landing them."

Let's meet the Signees Amaria Baldwin is a guard from Albemarle, North Carolina and she attends Stanley Stem Early College. She is over a 1,000-point scorer in high school, and during her junior year she averaged 25 points, and during her sophomore year averaged 23 points a game.

"Amari is a quick guard that can score on all three levels and is a relentless defender," said Lamonte. "She averaged 20ppg these past three years. She will add a scoring mentality to our team."

Breonna Roaf is a point guard from Fayetteville, North Carolina who attends Terry Sanford Senior High School. She is ranked as #1 PG in NC in the 2025 class and has led her team to the state championship and was named First-Team All-State. She was conference player of the year in the 3A/4A All-American and was named to the first team all-region. She also is a 1,000-point scorer.

"Breonna is a coach's dream as a pass first PG averaging 7 per game," said Lamonte. "She understands the game and gets everyone in the right position to score. Her leadership and passes will have the Rams excited."

Taniya Simms is a forward from Fairmont, North Carolina and she attends Fairmont High School. As a junior she was Conference Co-Player of the Year, she led her team to the Robeson County shootout and was named the MVP. She also has scored over 1,000-points.

"Taniya ss a strong athletic post," said Lamonte. "She averages a double-double and defensively is a rim protector. She will bring a versatile post presence that we haven't had since Kandace Tate."

Taylor Simpson is a forward from Charlotte, North Carolina and she attends Maracana's Middle College.

"Taylor is a long athletic guard/forward," said Lamonte. "She is a defensive threat picking up guards full court, rebounding, and blocking shots. She will help stretch the opponents' defense with her ability to score."

Khloe Thompson is a combo guard from Davidson, North Carolina and she attends the Cannon School. She is a four-year letter winner, and the Rams are her number-one pick over other Division One institutions.

"Khloe was put on our radar by former Ram Aja Stevens," said Lamonte. "Everything she has said about her is true. She is a leader, a competitor, state champion, and floor general that can score."

CIAA Preseason/Polls Jakaiya Mack was named to the 2024-2025 All-CIAA Women's Basketball Preseason Team Frontcourt. Mack finished last season playing in 15 games and started in 12. She averaged 23 minutes with 8 points per game, 45% FG, and 57% FT. The women were selected to finish tenth.
